Best Truly Wireless Headphones for January 2018: AirPods, Bose, Sony and More

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a January 2018 buyer, Apple AirPods were the easiest overall choice for iPhone owners, Bose SoundSport Free the strongest exercise pick, Sony WF-1000X the specialist choice for sound and active noise cancellation, and Jabra Elite Sport the option to buy only when workout tracking mattered. This is a historical buying guide for products shipping in or around January 2018, primarily in the United States—not a ranking of the best earbuds available in 2026.

What “truly wireless” meant in January 2018

Here, truly wireless means two independent earbuds with no cable connecting them. Neckband models and wireless earbuds joined by a wire are excluded. First-generation true-wireless products had shorter battery life, less mature Bluetooth links, larger cases and more app dependence than later generations.

The useful question was not “Which model wins every test?” It was which compromise matched your phone and routine. I weighed sound, fit, connection stability, single-charge and case battery life, calls, controls, sweat protection, awareness, noise cancellation, software support, compatibility and dated US pricing.

Quick comparison

Model January 2018 price reference Best for Battery information ANC Water/sweat information Main drawback
Apple AirPods Historical Apple pricing should be checked in an archived January 2018 listing iPhone everyday use Apple’s period claim; exact figure and case capacity should be read from the archived specification No Not an exercise-focused rating Open fit, limited isolation and variable security
Bose SoundSport Free $249.95 launch price (Bose, September 2017) Exercise and outdoor awareness Up to 5 hours per charge; case supplied two additional charges (manufacturer claim) No IPX4 splash/sweat resistance, not waterproofing Large buds and case; occasional early video-delay reports
Sony WF-1000X $199 US reference price in contemporary testing Sound and ANC About 3 hours per charge; case provided two additional charges in testing Yes Not waterproof; unsuitable for hard workouts Dropouts, fussy charging and short endurance
Jabra Elite Sport $250 MSRP in a January 2018 review Heart-rate and workout metrics About 4.5 hours per charge; two additional case charges No Sweat/splash protection; the contemporary review reported an IP67 claim Large, potentially uncomfortable housing and bass-heavy sound
Jaybird Run Approximately $179 US reference price Compact sport alternative Practical endurance and case behavior varied by use and firmware No Sport-oriented sweat resistance First-generation connection and reliability concerns
Samsung Gear IconX 2018 January 2018 price and exact configuration require archived Samsung verification Samsung users wanting phone-free workouts Separate Bluetooth-streaming and standalone-playback figures must be checked in the dated manual No Fitness-oriented; exact January rating requires archived documentation Ecosystem limits, battery compromises and larger design

Best overall for iPhone: Apple AirPods

AirPods were the low-friction recommendation for people using an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Pairing and switching within Apple’s ecosystem were unusually simple, the case was exceptionally compact, and the stem design was light enough for all-day carry. Controls and voice-assistant access were convenient, and call quality was acceptable for this early category. Apple’s product reference is at Apple’s AirPods page; January 2018 price and specification details should be read from an archived version rather than inferred from today’s models.

#1 Best Overall
JBL Vibe Beam - True Wireless Earbuds - Black
  • JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
  • Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
  • Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
  • Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
  • Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences

The trade-off was the one-size, open fit. Without sealing ear tips, AirPods let in more outside sound and leak more audio than sealed in-ear designs. Some ears hold them securely; others do not. They have no active noise cancellation and are less appropriate for vigorous movement than sport models. Android phones can use basic Bluetooth audio, but the Apple integration advantage is largely lost.

Choose AirPods when pairing, calls, portability and Apple-device convenience matter more than isolation, exercise security or audiophile tuning. Do not describe them as the objectively best-sounding earbuds.

Best for exercise: Bose SoundSport Free

Bose announced SoundSport Free in September 2017 at $249.95, claiming up to five hours of earbud playback. Its charging case supplied two additional charges. The announcement lists IPX4 resistance and the StayHear+ Sport tip system: Bose’s announcement and specifications.

The winged sport tips are intended to keep the earbuds stable, while the relatively open presentation makes traffic, people and gym surroundings easier to notice than with strongly isolating earbuds. That is a practical advantage for outdoor running, where ANC can reduce useful environmental cues. IPX4 means resistance to splashing and sweat—not swimming, submersion or guaranteed protection in heavy rain.

Soundcore by Anker P20i True Wireless Earbuds, with Big Bass, 30H Playtime
  • Powerful Bass: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds have oversized 10mm drivers that deliver powerful sound with boosted bass so you can lose yourself in your favorite songs.
  • Personalized Listening Experience: Use the soundcore app to customize the controls and choose from 22 EQ presets. With "Find My Earbuds", a lost earbud can emit noise to help you locate it.
  • Long Playtime, Fast Charging: Get 10 hours of battery life on a single charge with a case that extends it to 30 hours. If P20i true wireless earbuds are low on power, a quick 10-minute charge will give you 2 hours of playtime.
  • Portable On-the-Go Design: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds and the charging case are compact and lightweight with a lanyard attached. It's small enough to slip in your pocket, or clip on your bag or keys–so you never worry about space.
  • AI-Enhanced Clear Calls: 2 built-in mics and an AI algorithm work together to pick up your voice so that you never have to shout over the phone.

The housings and case are bigger than AirPods, so pocketability and comfort depend on your ears. Contemporary users also reported noticeable right-earbud delay in some video playback; that was a testing observation, not a universal failure. Bose’s Connect app included a Find My Buds feature, useful because a loose earbud is easy to misplace.

SoundSport Free is the safer sport recommendation when fit stability, awareness and robust everyday exercise use outrank compactness and ANC.

Best sound and active noise cancellation: Sony WF-1000X

Sony’s WF-1000X was one of the first prominent completely wireless models with active noise cancellation. Contemporary testing praised its compact, comfortable design and sound, while listing a $199 US reference price, approximately three hours of battery life, a case with two additional charges, Bluetooth 4.1 and 6.8-gram earbuds: Tech Advisor’s contemporary review.

That sound-and-ANC combination made Sony attractive on planes and in offices. It was not a universal winner. Review testing recorded occasional right-earbud dropouts, unintuitive pairing (particularly with iPhone), and a companion app that was important for setup and configuration. The case had no clear charge-level indicator, and each earbud had to sit correctly in its cradle to charge. Three-hour endurance is also a serious limitation on long flights unless charging breaks are available.

Apple AirPods 4 Wireless Earbuds
  • REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
  • PERSONALIZED SPATIAL AUDIO — Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you, creating a theater-like listening experience for music, TV shows, movies, games, and more.*
  • IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — AirPods 4 feature the Apple-designed H2 chip. Voice Isolation improves the quality of phone calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
  • MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*

The WF-1000X was not waterproof and was a poor choice for intense exercise. Buy it only if sound and ANC justify accepting early-generation connection behavior, short battery life and more involved setup.

Best for fitness data: Jabra Elite Sport

Jabra Elite Sport was a specialist rather than a general-purpose winner. A contemporary Macworld review listed a $250 MSRP, built-in heart-rate monitoring, an accelerometer for steps and exercise repetitions, approximately 4.5 hours of single-charge use, and two additional case charges: Macworld’s review.

Those sensors are worthwhile only if you will actually use the workout features. Readings depend on a stable, correctly seated fit and are consumer fitness estimates, not medical measurements. The large athletic housings and interchangeable tips and wings can stay secure but may become uncomfortable during long listening sessions. The review described strong bass and middling general-purpose audio, a combination that can suit training better than balanced music listening.

Jabra’s transparency mode should not be confused with natural hearing: contemporary testing found outside sounds could seem distorted or incorrectly placed. A running watch or fitness tracker may already cover the metrics, making Elite Sport’s extra cost and bulk difficult to justify. The same review reported a three-year warranty against sweat damage; coverage is country-specific and should be confirmed before purchase.

Other January 2018 options

Jaybird Run

Jaybird Run occupied the sport-oriented middle ground at an approximately $179 US reference price in contemporary comparison coverage: Tech Advisor’s comparison. Supplied tips and wings supported a smaller exercise-focused fit, and Jaybird’s companion app offered equalizer customization. Before buying, verify whether both earbuds can operate independently, how the primary/secondary-earbud link behaves, the practical case endurance, and whether firmware available by January 2018 addressed reported connection complaints. It was a plausible alternative, not a reason to rank it above Bose automatically.

Samsung Gear IconX 2018

Gear IconX 2018 combined fitness features, touch controls and onboard music storage. That storage was its distinctive benefit: a runner could leave the phone behind for compatible standalone playback. Streaming battery life and phone-free playback endurance are separate figures, and the exact January 2018 storage, price, compatibility and water-resistance specifications require an archived Samsung manual or product page rather than memory.

Samsung/Galaxy owners were the natural audience. On iPhone and non-Samsung Android devices, ecosystem features were less compelling. Its larger fitness-oriented shape also made it less attractive as an everyday commuter earbud.

If you run outdoors

Prioritize retention, sweat resistance, usable controls and awareness of traffic. Bose is the strongest match among this group. Do not make ANC the deciding feature for road running.

If you fly or work in a noisy office

Sony is the only serious ANC specialist here, but its approximately three-hour per-charge endurance and reported dropouts require realistic expectations. Passive isolation from a well-fitted sealed earbud can be preferable if reliability matters more.

If workout metrics are the reason for buying

Choose Jabra Elite Sport when heart-rate and repetition tracking are central. Consider Gear IconX 2018 when phone-free music is equally important, after verifying the dated specifications.

If you want phone-free music

Only a model with onboard storage can genuinely replace the phone during playback. In this shortlist that points to Gear IconX 2018, subject to January 2018 compatibility and storage verification.

What to check before paying

  • Return policy: Ear shape is individual. Buy where you can return or exchange after trying every supplied tip and wing.
  • Fit before sound judgments: A poor seal can make one side seem quieter and remove bass. Test several sizes and reseat both earbuds.
  • Battery claims: Separate per-charge runtime from case charges. Calls, ANC, volume, reconnections, firmware and battery age change real endurance.
  • Charging contacts: Clean the contacts and confirm each bud is seated. Sony’s review specifically noted careful placement was needed for WF-1000X charging.
  • Pairing recovery: If one side will not connect, put both earbuds in the case, close it, forget the Bluetooth device, then follow that model’s manual to re-pair. Menus differ by product.
  • Calls and video: Early designs could have uneven microphone behavior, latency or synchronization problems. Test a call and a video before the return period ends.
  • Sweat versus water: IPX4 is splash resistance, not waterproofing. Warranty terms for sweat vary by country; never infer swimming protection from a fitness label.
  • Apps and firmware: Companion apps may be required for EQ, ANC or updates. Check that the iOS or Android version you use is supported.
  • Loss risk: A useful case and a find-my-earbuds function can matter as much as a small sound-quality difference.

January 2018 verdict

There was no honest single winner. Buy AirPods for the smoothest iPhone experience; Bose SoundSport Free for secure, awareness-friendly exercise; Sony WF-1000X for the best documented sound-and-ANC combination if you accept short battery life and occasional dropouts; and Jabra Elite Sport only when its workout sensors are the point of purchase. Jaybird Run was a reasonable sport alternative, while Samsung Gear IconX 2018 made sense mainly for Samsung users seeking onboard music and fitness functions.
