Yes. A Galaxy Z Flip3 5G can make a contactless payment while it is folded shut. Samsung Pay is now part of Samsung Wallet: wake the Cover Screen, swipe up from its bottom edge, choose a card, authenticate with your fingerprint or Wallet PIN, then hold the back of the phone near an NFC reader.
What you need before paying
- Samsung Wallet installed and signed in, with initial setup completed.
- A supported credit or debit card added and approved by its issuer.
- A secure screen lock and a registered fingerprint or Samsung Wallet PIN.
- NFC/contactless payment available on the phone.
- A merchant terminal that accepts contactless payments.
Device, card and feature support varies by country, carrier firmware, bank and software version. Samsung’s current U.S. compatibility information lists the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G and says Samsung Wallet requires Android 9 or later; it does not mean every bank card is eligible. Check the Samsung Wallet FAQ and your card issuer for local support.
Set up Samsung Wallet on the unfolded phone
- Open Samsung Wallet on the main display. Samsung Pay users may be asked to update or migrate to Wallet.
- Open Menu or All, then choose Payment cards.
- Tap the add button and scan the card, enter its details manually, or use an NFC-enabled card when that option is offered.
- Accept the issuer’s terms and complete verification. The issuer may use a text message, email, banking app or direct confirmation.
- Confirm your fingerprint and Wallet PIN security settings.
Card enrollment, issuer verification and most Wallet settings normally require the main screen. Samsung notes that Wallet functionality can be limited until this initial setup is complete.
Open Wallet from the closed Cover Screen
- Fold the Z Flip3 shut.
- Wake the Cover Screen by pressing the side key or tapping the display.
- Swipe upward from the very bottom edge of the Cover Screen.
- When the Quick Access card panel appears, swipe left or right to the card you want.
Samsung originally documented this Cover Screen swipe-up flow for the Z Flip3, and current Wallet documentation calls the feature Quick Access. Exact menu labels and availability can differ by region and Wallet version. If Quick Access settings are exposed in your build, make sure Cover Screen access is enabled.

Pay without unfolding the phone
- With the selected card showing, authenticate using the Z Flip3’s side-mounted fingerprint reader or your Samsung Wallet PIN.
- At the checkout terminal, find the contactless symbol.
- Present the back of the folded phone close to the reader. The Cover Screen is the control surface; it is not the part you should deliberately press against the terminal.
- Keep the phone still for a moment until the terminal confirms the payment.
The Z Flip3 user guide describes NFC payment as touching the device to a compatible reader. If there is no response, move the rear of the phone slightly rather than repeatedly tapping the Cover Screen or hinge. You do not need to unfold the phone for the ordinary retail contactless flow.
Which part of the phone communicates with the terminal?
The display lets you launch Wallet, select a card and authenticate. The phone’s NFC hardware communicates with the reader through the device, so the practical instruction is to hold the rear panel near the reader. There is no single antenna position that should be assumed for every regional model; keep the phone close and adjust its position slightly if necessary.
If the swipe-up gesture does nothing
- Wake the Cover Screen fully, then start the gesture at its bottom edge.
- Open Wallet on the unfolded phone and confirm that setup, card approval and identity verification are complete.
- Check the Quick Access settings if your software version provides them.
- Confirm that a payment card is present and active.
- Check that NFC is enabled in Settings; labels can vary by software version.
- Restart the phone, then install available Wallet and system updates.
- Remove a thick, magnetic or wallet-style case and test again.
If no card appears after these checks, the issuer may not support that card in Samsung Wallet, or the device’s market and carrier software may not support the feature. Contact the issuer or Samsung support rather than repeatedly attempting a transaction.
If the terminal does not detect the phone
- Wrong presentation: hold the rear of the folded phone near the reader and try a small position change.
- Authentication incomplete: authenticate again; use the Wallet PIN if the fingerprint fails.
- NFC or terminal problem: verify NFC is enabled and ask whether the terminal is contactless-capable or temporarily offline.
- Accessory interference: remove wallet cases, metal plates, magnets and any case containing physical cards. Samsung warns that some third-party covers can obstruct both NFC communication and fingerprint recognition.
- Reader timing: keep the phone in place until confirmation instead of moving it away immediately.
- Card or merchant restriction: a card can be declined even when the phone is compatible, and a merchant may require a physical card, signature, PIN or another payment method.

Can you keep a case on the phone?
Usually, yes, if it is a slim, non-metallic case that does not obstruct the side fingerprint reader. Samsung-approved covers are the safest choice for compatibility. Thick cases, wallet cases with payment cards, metal inserts, magnetic mounts and bulky accessories can make NFC unreliable. Remove the case before concluding that the phone or card is defective. Samsung community reports also document strap-case interference on the Z Flip3: community example.
Regional, card and payment-network limits
Samsung Wallet support depends on the country, bank, card network, device model, carrier and software region. A card that works in a banking app or another mobile wallet may still be unavailable in Samsung Wallet. Transit cards and other transport features can follow different rules from ordinary retail payments.
Wallet supports NFC/contactless payments. Samsung’s general documentation also discusses Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) on devices that support it, but do not assume that every Z Flip3 variant can pay at an old magnetic-stripe terminal. Use an NFC/contactless reader unless Samsung and your regional model documentation explicitly confirm otherwise.
When opening the phone is the better option
- You have not yet added or verified the card.
- The Cover Screen shortcut is missing or Wallet requests an additional security step.
- You need to inspect transaction details or change a Wallet setting.
- The reader repeatedly fails after case removal and NFC checks.
- The merchant requires a physical card, signature, terminal PIN or another method that Wallet cannot replace.
Security and lost-phone steps
Wallet requires fingerprint or PIN authentication before a card payment. If the phone is lost, use Samsung’s available account and device-management tools to lock or remove Wallet cards. Samsung states that a factory reset deletes payment information stored on the device; see its security and troubleshooting guidance for current options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Cover Screen have to remain lit while I tap?
It must be awake long enough to launch Quick Access and authenticate. After authentication, keep the rear of the phone near the reader until the terminal confirms the transaction.
Can a terminal still ask for a PIN?
Yes. A merchant or card issuer can require a terminal PIN, signature or another verification even after Wallet authentication. Follow the terminal’s instruction or use another payment method.
Will transit payments work exactly like a store purchase?
Not necessarily. Transit-card behavior, gates and express-payment rules vary by country, transit agency, card and Wallet version; check local Samsung and issuer instructions.
What happens to Wallet cards after a factory reset?
Samsung says a factory reset deletes payment information stored on the device. You must set Wallet up again before paying.
