For regular messaging on Windows 11, install the official Telegram Desktop client from Telegram’s download page. Choose the portable build if you cannot install software, or Telegram Web for temporary access on a computer you do not own. Once signed in, Windows makes it easier to search chats, type longer messages, share files, manage notifications and join calls—but ordinary Telegram Cloud Chats are not end-to-end encrypted by default.
Choose the right way to use Telegram

Telegram offers official desktop downloads, including a Windows x64 portable option, at desktop.telegram.org. Telegram’s applications page is another official route. For the Store, search for the official Telegram Desktop listing rather than relying on an old product link. Avoid third-party download sites.
Install Telegram on Windows 11
Use the official desktop installer
- Open Telegram Desktop’s official download page and select Get Telegram for Windows x64.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow its setup prompts.
- Open Telegram from the Start menu or the shortcut created during setup.
Use the Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store and search for Telegram.
- Choose the official Telegram Desktop listing and select Get or the equivalent install control shown in your Store.
- Launch Telegram from the Start menu when installation finishes.
If the listing is unavailable or Store access is blocked, use Telegram’s official desktop download page if your organization permits it. In a managed workplace or school, follow the administrator’s software policy rather than bypassing restrictions.
Use the portable build
Choose the official portable Windows download from Telegram’s desktop page, then run it from the location where you want to keep it. Portability does not make a session private automatically: on a shared PC, sign out and remove local app data when finished.

Sign in with a QR code or phone number
QR-code sign-in
- Open Telegram Desktop and select Start Messaging to display the QR code.
- On the phone already connected to your Telegram account, open Settings → Devices and choose Link Desktop Device.
- Scan the code shown on Windows and approve the new session if prompted.
Labels can vary by mobile operating system or app version. If scanning is inconvenient, select the phone-number sign-in option.
Phone-number sign-in
- Enter the mobile number associated with the account in international format.
- Enter the login code Telegram sends. It may arrive inside Telegram on another authorized device rather than by SMS.
- If requested, enter the two-step-verification password.
Telegram accounts require a mobile number; landline numbers are not supported. If the code does not arrive, check an already signed-in device and confirm the country code and number. Never share a login code or enter it on a third-party website. After signing in, review Settings → Devices and end any session you do not recognize.
Use Telegram for everyday Windows messaging
Find conversations and messages
Use Telegram’s search to find chats, people, usernames and messages. Windows’ keyboard and larger display make it practical to handle longer replies, keep a conversation visible beside another app, and copy links or message text into your work. Exact controls and placement can change between releases.

Send text, media and files
Write in the message field and press Enter to send. Use the attachment control to choose documents or media; where supported, dragging a file from File Explorer into a conversation is a quick alternative. Add emojis, GIFs or stickers when useful, and use text-formatting options available in your client. Telegram supports sharing file types including documents, archives and audio; its FAQ gives examples such as DOC, ZIP and MP3.

Send a message to Saved Messages to keep a link, note, photo or file accessible from your other signed-in devices. It works well as a simple personal inbox, but it is not a governed document repository, formal backup system or encrypted archive.
Move files between your phone and PC
- Open Saved Messages on the phone and send yourself the item, or open it on Windows and attach a file from File Explorer.
- Open the same cloud chat on the other device and download or forward the item as needed.
- Search Telegram later to locate the shared message or file.
Cloud-chat content is available across connected devices, while downloaded files and cached media can occupy local disk space. Telegram provides cache-management controls; clearing local cache is different from deleting the cloud conversation. Do not treat this workflow as a substitute for a separate backup of important files.

Make voice and video calls
Use Telegram Desktop for one-to-one voice calls and supported video-call features. During a call, use the current call controls to mute the microphone, turn video on or off, share the screen where available, or end the call. Telegram also describes group-call and conference-call capabilities in its group calls announcement. Controls and availability may vary with the current client release.
If a call control is missing, update or use the official desktop client and check that Windows allows Telegram to access the microphone, camera or screen-sharing function you need. For a call where privacy matters, check which window or display is being shared before presenting it.
Choose groups, channels and bots for the right job
- Groups support discussion and collaboration among members. Telegram’s FAQ states a maximum of 200,000 members; an older HTMD article’s 2-million figure conflicts with that official figure and should not be relied on.
- Channels are designed for broadcast-style publishing to an audience.
- Bots and mini apps provide automated or interactive services, but are created by third parties rather than being a privacy guarantee from Telegram.
- Saved Messages is a personal place for notes, links and transfers between your own devices.
Large communities can bring spam, scams, moderation demands and notification overload. Treat a bot as a separate service: read its terms and privacy information, and do not give it passwords, login codes or other sensitive information without a clear, trusted reason.

Control notifications and appearance
Reduce interruptions
Mute a busy chat, group or channel using that conversation’s notification controls. Depending on the current client, you may be able to mute for a defined period or disable sound while keeping visual alerts. If Telegram-level settings are not enough, open Windows 11 notification settings and adjust Telegram’s permission or alert behavior there. When notifications do not appear, check both places.
Choose a comfortable theme
Telegram includes dark-mode and appearance options, and some versions offer chat-level customization. Set the appearance in Telegram rather than assuming the Windows 11 light or dark theme controls every Telegram setting. If a label differs, look in the app’s settings rather than following an older screenshot.

Know what encryption means in Telegram
Telegram distinguishes ordinary Cloud Chats from Secret Chats. Cloud Chats are encrypted and synchronize through Telegram Cloud, but they are not end-to-end encrypted by default. Secret Chats provide end-to-end encryption and are tied to the device where they are created; they do not become a normal cloud history across your devices. Telegram’s FAQ explains the distinction.

If a Secret Chat is needed on Windows, start it from that Windows device. A Secret Chat created on a phone will not automatically appear as a Secret Chat on the PC, and logging out can remove access to device-specific Secret Chats.
Enable two-step verification
- On a trusted device, open Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification.
- Set a strong additional password and add a recovery email.
- Protect that email account with its own strong password and two-factor authentication.
With two-step verification enabled, a login requires both the Telegram code and this additional password.
Lock the app and review sessions
- Set a Telegram passcode in Settings → Privacy and Security so someone using an unlocked Windows account cannot casually open the app.
- Lock Windows with a password or Windows Hello, especially on a shared or unattended PC.
- Open Settings → Devices periodically and terminate sessions on computers you no longer use or do not recognize.
- On a computer you do not own, prefer Telegram Web for short-term access, sign out before leaving, and do not save credentials or leave the browser session open.
Export, clear, delete or auto-delete with care
These actions have different consequences. Check the confirmation dialog before proceeding, especially when working with a conversation you may need later.
- Export chat history creates a local copy of selected chat content. Store that export with the same care as the messages themselves.
- Clear history removes message history; it may leave the conversation entry in the chat list.
- Delete chat removes the conversation from your list. Telegram may offer deletion for both participants where permitted; read the confirmation carefully.
- Auto-delete removes messages according to configured timing rules, so do not use it as a substitute for saving information you need to keep.

Quick workflows for common situations
Send a file from your phone to Windows
- Send the file to Saved Messages from your phone.
- Open Saved Messages on Telegram Desktop and download it.
Quiet Telegram during work
- Mute non-urgent chats, groups or channels in Telegram.
- If alerts still interrupt, adjust Telegram’s Windows notification settings or use Windows Focus controls.
Remove an old or lost computer from the account
- On a trusted signed-in device, open Settings → Devices.
- Find the old or unfamiliar session and terminate it.
- Change your two-step-verification password if you think the account may be compromised.
Use a private conversation on Windows
- Start a Secret Chat from Telegram on the Windows device.
- Confirm that the conversation is the Secret Chat before sending sensitive messages.
- Keep in mind that this chat is device-specific, not a synchronized cloud conversation.
