Apple has not announced the iPhone 18, and reports disagree about whether the smaller cutout is ready for this generation. The more radical change may be a separate, rumored foldable iPhone.
What the iPhone 18 design leak actually says
Several reports say Apple may move at least some Face ID hardware beneath the display on the iPhone 18 Pro models, making the Dynamic Island narrower while leaving a visible front cutout. One often-repeated leak estimates a width of about 13.49 mm, down from 20.76 mm. Those measurements are unconfirmed estimates, not Apple specifications. MacRumors’ report on the smaller Dynamic Island describes the claim; Apple has not confirmed it.
A smaller island could make the screen feel less interrupted in everyday use, but it is not the same as removing the island. Nor does relocating one sensor mean the entire TrueDepth camera and Face ID system is hidden. Rumor coverage sometimes uses “under-display Face ID” loosely: it can refer to a component moving behind the panel, not necessarily an invisible camera and sensor array.
Three possible meanings of “under-display”
- One infrared component moves: The island remains, but may shrink.
- Most Face ID hardware moves: The cutout could become smaller still, though a visible camera opening may remain.
- The camera and Face ID system move fully under the panel: This would enable a much less interrupted screen, but current reports do not establish that this is ready for the iPhone 18 generation.
There is also no solid basis for saying the iPhone 18 Pro will switch to a top-left hole-punch camera. The safer interpretation is a possible smaller cutout, with its final shape and components unsettled.

Which iPhone models might get the change?
Most of the smaller-island reporting concerns the Pro models. Treat “iPhone 18” as a product family in headlines, not proof that every model will share one front design. 9to5Mac’s lineup report discusses model-specific screen and Dynamic Island claims; Apple has not confirmed any of them.
| Model | Rumored design picture | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | Similar overall design to the current Pro generation, with a possible smaller Dynamic Island and other display or camera changes. | The smaller-cutout claim is repeated, but not confirmed. |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | Possibly the same front-cutout change as Pro, with a larger display and battery. | Still a rumor, not an announced specification. |
| Standard iPhone 18 | No major redesign is currently established; the smaller cutout may remain Pro-exclusive. | Do not assume the Pro rumor applies to the standard model. |
| iPhone 18e | Expected by some reporting as a lower-cost model, with design details unsettled. | Low-confidence lineup speculation. |
| iPhone Air successor | A future model has been rumored, but its timing and design remain unclear. | Not enough to infer a shared iPhone 18 design. |
| Foldable iPhone, sometimes called “Ultra” | A separate foldable design is widely rumored, with a book-style format. | Its name and final specifications are not confirmed. |
MacRumors’ iPhone 18 roundup tracks the broader family rumors, while its iPhone 18 Pro roundup covers the more specific Pro claims. Both are rumor summaries, not Apple announcements.

Is this a major redesign?
That depends on what “major” means. A smaller front cutout would be noticeable every time the display is in use, so it could be a meaningful cosmetic improvement. But available reporting does not point to a radical new chassis for the conventional Pro models. Current rumors describe roughly the same 6.3-inch Pro and 6.9-inch Pro Max screen sizes and a similar rear camera plateau. MacRumors’ feature roundup outlines those claims; they remain unconfirmed.
- Potentially meaningful: a smaller Dynamic Island would reclaim some screen space and reduce the visual interruption.
- Not established: a completely uninterrupted display, a new Pro chassis, or a radical rear redesign.
- More consequential than the cutout: a rumored staggered launch could split the lineup across fall 2026 and spring 2027, if reporting proves accurate.
Other Pro rumors include possible LTPO+ display improvements, a simplified Camera Control button, a thicker body and larger battery, a revised front-glass treatment, camera hardware changes, and a variable-aperture main camera. These are distinct kinds of changes: internal engineering, controls, materials, and camera function do not by themselves establish a new exterior design. PhoneArena’s Pro Max rumor coverage and Digital Camera World’s roundup discuss some of these possibilities; none is an Apple-confirmed specification.

Why the smaller-island rumor is disputed
The smaller cutout has been repeated across supply-chain, leaker, and display-industry reporting, and former display analyst Ross Young has reportedly supported at least one version of the claim. Repetition raises its plausibility, but several articles can still trace back to the same original report; they are not necessarily independent confirmations. The initial MacRumors report and 9to5Mac’s account are among the reports behind the claim.
More recent reporting is not conclusive that full under-display Face ID will be ready for this cycle. Some accounts say the smaller-island change could slip to a later generation, potentially iPhone 19. The disagreement is visible in MacRumors’ Pro rumor roundup and Macworld’s iPhone 18 Pro coverage.

- Full removal of the island: not established by the current evidence.
- The same change on the standard model: not established; the strongest claims focus on Pro.
- Production readiness: uncertain, since Apple may test multiple designs before finalizing a device.
The foldable may be the real design upheaval
A separate foldable iPhone is the more radical design story in the rumors. Reports describe a book-style device with an internal display around 7.8 inches; some also suggest a cover-screen hole-punch camera. The “iPhone Ultra” name is a reported possibility, not an Apple-confirmed name, and estimates of a price around or above $2,000 are not official. Tom’s Guide’s foldable roundup and T3’s camera-placement report cover those claims.
The foldable should not be confused with the conventional iPhone 18 Pro. If it arrives, it would offer a different form factor, with potential trade-offs in weight, crease visibility, durability, repair costs, and app optimization. None of those details is settled for a final Apple product. Reports also suggest it could launch separately or alongside the Pro models, but that timing is unconfirmed. Macworld’s launch-timing report describes the possibility.

When might the iPhone 18 models arrive?
Current reporting widely expects the Pro models and possibly the foldable to appear around September 2026, with the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e potentially moving to spring 2027. An Air successor has also been mentioned for a later launch, but its schedule is unsettled. Apple has not announced a release calendar. See TechRadar’s schedule analysis and MacRumors’ lineup roundup for the reported split.
That distinction matters: a fall Pro launch would not mean the regular iPhone 18 is available at the same time. Announcement, preorder, and retail dates can also differ, so none should be treated as a confirmed date until Apple publishes it.
Should you buy an iPhone 17 or wait?
The iPhone 17 is a known product, unlike the iPhone 18 rumors. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025, with a 6.3-inch display, ProMotion, A19 chip, 48MP main and ultra-wide cameras, and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. Apple’s U.S. store lists it from $799, with 256GB and 512GB options; the starting price is a current listing, not an iPhone 18 price prediction. Apple’s announcement and its U.S. purchase page provide the baseline.
Buy iPhone 17 now if
- You need a phone before the rumored fall 2026 launch.
- The current Dynamic Island is acceptable to you.
- You prefer a known device, current pricing, and established accessories over waiting on leaks.
- You want to avoid being an early adopter of a first-generation foldable.
Wait for iPhone 18 Pro if
- The possible smaller Dynamic Island is your main reason to upgrade.
- You want the latest camera and processor rather than a known current model.
- You can wait for Apple’s actual announcement and decide from final specifications.
Wait for the standard iPhone 18 if
- You want a non-Pro model and do not need a possible Pro-only display change.
- You can accept a potential spring 2027 launch rather than assuming a fall release.
Consider a foldable only if
- You specifically want a large, tablet-like screen in a pocketable device.
- You are comfortable weighing first-generation durability and software trade-offs against the appeal of the form factor.
- You would make the decision based on Apple’s confirmed name, price, and specifications—not leaked estimates.
