If your Galaxy Watch4 receives a notification but shows its contents only after you tap it, the watch is usually receiving the alert correctly. The first settings to check are Show with details and Turn on screen in Galaxy Wearable. The first controls whether notification text appears automatically; the second controls whether the display wakes when an alert arrives.
First identify which notification problem you have
From the watch face, swipe right to open the notification list. Samsung documents this navigation for Galaxy Watch devices at its Watch4 guide.
- The alert is in the list, but the screen did not wake or show details: concentrate on advanced display settings, watch modes and phone-use behavior.
- No alert appears anywhere: check per-app permissions, phone notifications, notification access, connection and background restrictions.
If tapping consistently reveals the message, a presentation setting is a more likely starting point than a failed display or a defective watch.
The fastest fix: enable automatic details and screen wake
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the connected Android phone.
- Tap Watch settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open Advanced notification settings.
- Turn on Show with details. Some software versions call this Auto show details.
- Turn on Turn on screen. An alternate label can be Turn display on.
Samsung describes these as separate controls: disabling the details option stops automatic message previews, while disabling the screen option stops the display from waking. The documented notification settings are at Samsung Support and Samsung’s notification troubleshooting page. Labels can differ by phone, carrier, region and Watch4 software version.

- Rotating Bezel Navigation: Physical rotating bezel allows precise and intuitive control of apps and menus.
Make sure the affected app is allowed
- In Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Notifications, tap App notifications.
- Change the filter to All, if it is not already selected.
- Enable the app that is missing alerts.
- If shown, enable Turn on for new apps so newly installed apps are not excluded automatically.
Then check the phone itself. In the phone’s notification settings, allow the app’s notifications, review lock-screen visibility and make sure the relevant notification category is not set to silent. Also check the app’s own notification preferences. Wear OS mirrors the phone’s notification behavior; Google explains this relationship in its notification troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether the phone is being used
Galaxy Wearable’s main Notifications page may include Show while using phone, Show only while wearing or Smart device selection. These options determine whether an alert is shown on the watch when the phone is unlocked or actively in use. The exact label varies, so inspect the available choices rather than assuming one universal setting.
For a clean test, lock the phone, leave the watch on your wrist and send a message from another device. If the watch works while the phone is locked but not while you are using it, this behavior setting is the likely explanation. If the screen never wakes even with the phone idle, return to Turn on screen and the watch modes below.

Turn off modes that suppress alerts or screen activation
On the watch, swipe down to open Quick settings and temporarily disable:

- Do Not Disturb
- Theater mode
- Sleep, Bedtime or Goodnight mode
- Power saving, for testing
Google states that Do Not Disturb turns notifications off and Theater mode prevents notifications from appearing while the display is off: Wear OS mode guidance. Power saving can limit screen and connectivity behavior. A silent notification can still appear without sound or vibration, so lack of sound alone does not prove delivery failed.
Verify the watch and phone are connected
- Open Galaxy Wearable and confirm that the Watch4 is shown as connected.
- On the watch, swipe down and inspect the connection indicators.
- Keep both devices close together and toggle Bluetooth off and on if needed.
- Restart the phone and the watch.
Galaxy Watch4 runs Wear OS and requires a compatible Android phone plus Galaxy Wearable for setup; it is not compatible with iPhone as a standalone watch. See Samsung’s Watch4 compatibility information. Notification behavior can differ between a nearby Bluetooth connection, a remote Wi-Fi connection and LTE service. Some alerts or apps still require the phone or an internet connection, so do not treat remote and Bluetooth behavior as interchangeable.

Restore notification access after updates or phone changes
Notification access can be lost after a phone or Galaxy Wearable update, app reinstall, device migration or a privacy change. In the phone’s Settings, search for Notification access, Device and app notifications or Notification access permissions. Confirm that Galaxy Wearable and the Watch manager or related Samsung wearable services still have access. Android menu names differ by manufacturer and version, so use Settings search rather than relying on one fixed path.
If access is already enabled, use this recovery sequence:

Remove background and battery restrictions
Some Android phones place Galaxy Wearable or its Watch manager in a sleeping or deep-sleep list. In the phone’s Battery settings, search for battery optimization, background usage, sleeping apps or deep sleeping apps. Remove Galaxy Wearable and its wearable-service components from restrictive lists where your phone provides that control. Also temporarily disable system-wide power saving and watch Power saving.

- Rotating Bezel Navigation: Physical rotating bezel allows precise and intuitive control of apps and menus.
This is a secondary branch, not the default explanation for a preview that appears after tapping. Samsung’s battery guidance, based on Android 13, notes that restrictions and menu names vary: Samsung battery optimization guidance.
Restart, update and clear cache in that order
- Toggle Show with details and Turn on screen off and on again.
- Force-close and reopen Galaxy Wearable.
- Restart both phone and watch.
- Install available updates for Galaxy Wearable, the Watch4 Manager or plug-in, phone software, watch software and the affected app.
- Clear Galaxy Wearable’s cache if your phone offers that option.
Clearing cache removes temporary files. Clearing data is different: it can erase the app’s local setup and require configuration again. Google also recommends restarting the phone and watch during notification troubleshooting: Google Wear OS support.

- Lock the phone and keep it near the watch.
- Leave the watch on your wrist and connected.
- Send one test message from another device.
- Record whether the watch vibrates or sounds, wakes its screen, shows message details automatically and retains the alert in the swipe-right notification list.
- Repeat with a second app.
This separates a global presentation problem from an app-specific permission or notification-category problem.

Symptom-based diagnosis
| What you observe | Most useful checks |
|---|---|
| Notification exists later, but the screen never wakes | Turn on screen; Theater, Do Not Disturb, Sleep and Power saving modes. |
| Watch vibrates, but the preview is blank or requires a tap | Show with details; phone/app privacy settings; silent or grouped notification categories. |
| Only one app fails | Galaxy Wearable’s App notifications list, the phone’s app permission and the app’s internal notification categories. |
| Alerts appear only when the phone is unlocked | Show while using phone or related notification-device selection settings. |
| No apps notify | Notification access, connection, watch modes, phone notifications, background restrictions and restarts. |
| Problem began after an update | Recheck notification access, update all wearable components, restart both devices and review battery restrictions. |
| Bluetooth works but remote notifications do not | Remote Wi-Fi or LTE status, internet availability and whether the specific app supports remote operation. |
Re-pair only after the software checks fail
If settings, permissions, notification access, updates and restarts do not restore alerts, remove the watch from Galaxy Wearable and pair it again. Re-pairing can require setup from the beginning, so make sure the phone and watch are backed up and that you know the Samsung and Google account credentials before starting. Do not jump directly to re-pairing when the notification is already present in the watch list.
Factory reset is the final software step
Consider a factory reset only when no app notifications work, the watch is connected, a clean re-pair has failed and Samsung Support or Samsung Members recommends it. A reset erases watch apps, settings and stored watch data; Google warns about this consequence in its troubleshooting guidance: factory-reset information.
Before resetting, back up supported watch data, record watch faces and important preferences, and confirm your account credentials. If the display also fails to wake for alarms or button presses, touch input is unreliable, or the screen remains blank outside notifications, contact Samsung Support or Samsung Members because hardware or a broader system fault becomes more plausible.
