Status: Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3.1 caused a software regression in the Pixel Wallpaper & style editor. The lock screen still showed the time, but its selectable clock designs could disappear or be reduced to one basic option. Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3.2 was reported to restore the styles. If your phone is still on a 3.1 build, install the newest available update.
What Pixel users saw
On affected installations, opening Wallpaper & style and entering the lock-screen controls still exposed settings such as clock color, size, or customization. The clock-style selector itself was empty, unavailable, or showed only the default/basic face.
This was not a missing lock-screen clock. The time continued to display, and the issue did not prevent unlocking or entering Always-on Display mode. It affected the appearance choices in the customization interface.
Reports and testing showed the regression on multiple Pixel devices running QPR2 Beta 3.1, but the available evidence does not establish that every supported model or every installation was affected. The exact internal cause was not publicly confirmed.

Google’s QPR2 beta program covered Pixel 6-series phones and newer supported devices during that release period, including Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 7, Pixel 8, Pixel 9 and Pixel 9a families. See the historical device list in Google’s QPR2 installation guide.

Beta 3.1, which rolled out on October 20, 2025, was primarily intended to address boot failures affecting some devices after the experimental Enable desktop experience features option was enabled. It was not released as a clock-style fix, so the customization regression remained. 9to5Google’s release report documents that purpose.

How to check whether your Pixel is affected
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Scroll to Build number.
- Compare it with
BP41.250916.010orBP41.250916.010.A1. - Then open Settings > System > Software updates and check for a newer build.
Build number is a more dependable check than the general “Android 16 QPR2 Beta” label, because labels and availability can vary by model and region.
How to restore the clock styles
Install Beta 3.2 or a later over-the-air update
- Go to Settings > System > Software updates.
- Tap Check for update.
- Install Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3.2 or any later build offered for your phone.
- Let the phone restart, or reboot it once the installation finishes.
- Open Wallpaper & style and verify that multiple clock faces are available.
Beta 3.2’s rollout and restoration of the options were reported by Android Authority. If styles are still absent, confirm that the build number actually moved beyond 3.1 before trying anything else.

If no update appears
- Confirm enrollment in the Android Beta for Pixel program.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, charge the phone, restart once, and check again.
- Do not sideload an image made for another Pixel model or codename.
- For a device that will not boot, use Google’s model-specific OTA recovery guidance at the QPR2 OTA downloads page.
Changing wallpapers, repeatedly opening the editor, or clearing Pixel Launcher data was not established as a reliable fix for this regression.
Should you leave the Android beta?
If you need the phone to be dependable, the public Android channel is safer. Google warns that preview builds can bring stability, battery, performance, compatibility and boot problems and may not suit a daily-use device; see the Android 16 release notes.

Returning to stable Android can require a factory reset and data wipe, depending on the route and timing. Back up first, then follow Google’s instructions at the QPR2 installation page. A normal OTA update is different from a downgrade or recovery flash, but no recovery procedure should be treated as universally data-preserving.
Choose based on your priority
- Need the styles now: install Beta 3.2 or later; if unavailable, weigh a backed-up return to stable.
- Need maximum reliability: use the public Android release rather than a beta.
- Already on 3.1 without the symptom: update anyway, because the regression could appear after a reboot, configuration change or UI refresh.
- Considering manual flashing: use only the exact device image and accept that recovery operations can erase data.
What this bug did—and did not—mean
There was no evidence that the regression damaged a display, changed the phone’s timekeeping, or weakened lock-screen security. It was a visual customization failure. That does not make beta software risk-free: the same builds could contain unrelated bugs, including the desktop-experience boot-loop problem that prompted Beta 3.1.

The incident is therefore best understood as a historical QPR2 beta regression, not an ongoing Android 16 defect on phones updated beyond Beta 3.1. Beta 3.2 was reported to restore the clock-style choices, although that does not establish that it fixed every other lock-screen or System UI issue.
