USB DAC Not Working on Pixel 8? Why It Happens and What to Try

USB DAC support is not universally broken on the Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, but particular DACs, adapters, firmware modes and audio formats can produce no sound, loud static, one-channel output, crackling or dropouts. Google says Pixel phones support USB-C audio accessories that support digital audio; a passive USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter is therefore an unsuitable test. Use the safety and diagnostic sequence below before replacing the phone or buying another high-resolution DAC.

First check: does the adapter contain a DAC?

A DAC (digital-to-analog converter) turns the Pixel’s digital USB audio into the analog signal required by ordinary 3.5mm headphones. Check the product specification for “built-in DAC,” “USB audio,” “USB Audio Class,” “UAC 1.0” or “UAC 2.0.” An adapter described only as mechanical or passive may not work on the Pixel’s digital USB-C audio path. Google explains the requirement in its USB-C audio guidance and USB-C earbud guidance.

Android supports compatible USB digital-audio peripherals and routes playback when one is detected. Its documented USB-audio path includes common rates such as 44.1 and 48 kHz, but the phone, DAC firmware, application and negotiated mode still determine what works in practice: Android USB audio architecture.

Match the symptom to the likely problem

What you see or hear What it may indicate
Nothing happens when connected Passive adapter, unsupported accessory, bad seating, cable or port problem, or failed USB negotiation.
Accessory is recognized but there is no sound Audio routing, app output mode, volume state or unsupported format.
Loud static or white noise DAC initialization or compatibility problem, firmware mode, or sample-rate negotiation.
Only one channel works DAC initialization, channel format, headphone cable or connector fault.
Crackling, popping or stuttering Format, power-management, connection-state or software interaction.
Only 96 kHz or other hi-res modes fail Format-specific compatibility, not proof that all USB audio is broken.
Replugging restores sound An intermittent USB negotiation or software state.
It works on a PC but not the Pixel Different host power, drivers, class support or format handling; this does not prove either device is defective.

Pixel Community reports describe these symptoms with devices including Truthear SHIO, EPZ TP30, Moondrop Dawn Pro, FiiO DS1 and AudioQuest DragonFly Cobalt. They are user reports, not a Google compatibility list or definitive diagnoses: static report, Dawn Pro report, SHIO report and stuttering report.

Safe troubleshooting sequence

1. Stop immediately if you hear static

  1. Pause playback and disconnect the DAC or headphones.
  2. Lower both phone and DAC volume before reconnecting.
  3. Do not repeatedly test at normal or high volume.
  4. Use inexpensive headphones for the next test, not valuable IEMs.

Sudden full-level noise can damage headphones and may risk hearing injury. A February 2026 community report documents continuing white-noise complaints, but it does not establish a failure rate or universal cause: report.

2. Confirm the accessory and connection

  • Verify that the adapter or earphones have an integrated DAC and USB Audio Class support.
  • Remove the case temporarily so the plug can seat fully.
  • Try another USB-C cable if the DAC uses a detachable cable.
  • Try another pair of headphones or IEMs.
  • Test the DAC on a computer or another phone. Failure on several hosts points more toward the DAC, cable or headphones; success elsewhere only shows that the combination works on those hosts.

3. Check the Pixel’s basic audio state

  1. Stop playback, disconnect the DAC and restart the Pixel.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off temporarily.
  3. Reconnect the DAC and raise volume modestly.
  4. Test a local video or system sound, then a second app.

Google’s sound checklist covers volume, Bluetooth, the USB-C port and trying another accessory: Pixel sound troubleshooting.

  • 【Warm Tips】 If your USB C device includes a 3.5mm audio jack, this adapter may not support phone calls. For example, some models for Galaxy (S9/S8/S10, Note 9/Note 8) and for iPad Pro (11" / 12.9", including iPad Pro 2018) may not support phone calls or music control

4. Inspect the USB-C port safely

Look for lint, moisture, corrosion or physical damage. Use only a soft, lint-free cloth on the exterior. Never insert a needle or other metal object, pour liquid into the port, or blast it with aggressive compressed air. If the phone reports moisture or debris, disconnect accessories and let the port dry at room temperature; Google’s instructions are at USB-C liquid and debris handling. A port can still charge while unreliable high-speed or audio accessory connections fail.

5. Update, then test conservative audio settings

Install the latest Android and Google Play system updates available for your exact Pixel 8, and update the music app. Google recommends updating during accessory troubleshooting: update guidance and Pixel Help.

  • Select 44.1 or 48 kHz.
  • Use 16-bit or 24-bit if the app offers that choice.
  • Disable exclusive, bit-perfect, EQ and DSP modes temporarily.
  • Start with a local file and low volume.

If standard playback works but 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192 kHz fails, treat it as a format or negotiation edge case. Android’s compatibility expectations do not guarantee every DAC mode on every phone or app: Android 15 CDD and USB-audio CTS information.

6. Compare with a second digital DAC

Use a different digital USB audio device, not another passive dongle. Prefer one with published Android/UAC support, a simple 44.1/48-kHz mode and a clear return policy. If it works, the Pixel’s USB path can operate with at least one device; that does not by itself prove the first DAC is defective.

7. Treat Developer options only as a diagnostic

Some community users report temporary changes after toggling Disable USB audio routing. This advanced setting can also stop USB audio, and labels vary by Android build. Record its original state, test once if needed, then restore it. It is not a confirmed Pixel 8 fix.

Is this an official Pixel 8 software bug?

The evidence supports a recurring, selective compatibility problem, not a universal failure. Google’s documentation says Pixel phones support digital USB-C audio, while multiple community reports span different DACs and symptoms. The available material does not establish one root cause, one affected Android build or a universal software fix. Reports involving Pixel 8 Pro or Pixel 8a should not be treated as proof that every Pixel 8 behaves identically.

When replacing the accessory makes sense

  • Highest chance of simple success: choose a mainstream digital USB-C adapter or USB-C earphones that explicitly document Android or Pixel compatibility. A basic dongle may offer less power and fewer controls.
  • Demanding headphones: a powered DAC/amp can provide more output but may consume more battery, draw more USB power and make sudden static more consequential.
  • High-resolution users: verify UAC version, maximum rates, Android support, firmware controls and whether 44.1/48-kHz fallback is available. “32-bit/384-kHz” labeling is not a Pixel guarantee.
  • Reliability over wired audio: Bluetooth avoids this USB path, at the cost of codec compression, latency, pairing and battery dependence.

Do not assume a Google adapter is readily available: Android’s CTS page says it is no longer manufactured and is not available in the Google Play Store, although marketplace stock can differ: availability note. No third-party model can be called guaranteed without model- and build-specific evidence.

Report a reproducible failure

After testing another digital DAC, submit a report through the community-reported path Settings → About phone → Send feedback about this device. Include:

  • Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro model, Android version and security-update date.
  • DAC make, exact model and firmware version.
  • USB-C cable or adapter, headphones and music app.
  • Sample rate, bit depth and any exclusive or DSP mode.
  • Whether it works on a PC or another phone.
  • Exact symptom and whether reconnecting or rebooting helps.

The feedback path and log guidance come from community support rather than a clearly published Google USB-DAC bug page: feedback discussion and log guidance. Contact the DAC manufacturer as well, especially when another DAC works; community experts recommend sharing the exact host, firmware and format details with both parties: manufacturer-support discussion and compatibility discussion.

The Bottom Line

The Pixel 8 can use USB DACs, but compatibility is selective. First verify a built-in digital DAC, stop immediately if static occurs, test the port and connection, fall back to 44.1/48 kHz, compare a second known-good digital device and report the exact model and software build. Replace the accessory only when the evidence points to that model; do not assume a PC success, a different app or a reconnect proves a universal fix.
