Start with a restart and simple isolation tests; on Android, Safe Mode can help identify a downloaded app. If flickering persists with green tint, lines, black patches, cracks, liquid exposure, or touch failures, stop tweaking settings and arrange service.
Identify what is flickering
“Flickering” can describe several different symptoms, and where it happens is often the most useful clue.
- Whole-screen flashing or brightness pulsing: The entire display briefly dims or brightens. Note whether it is worse at low brightness, while charging, or during heat-producing tasks.
- App-only glitches: Flicker limited to one game, video, browser, camera preview, or other app points first toward that app, its rendering, or an overlay.
- Green tint, colored or horizontal/vertical lines, black blotches, or dead pixels: These can indicate a display or other hardware problem, particularly after a drop or pressure.
- Flicker with missed or phantom touches: This warrants earlier service; touch and visible display symptoms can involve different parts of the display assembly.
- Bands visible only when filming the phone: Artificial lights can interact with a camera’s exposure and produce apparent flicker or bands. Samsung describes this camera effect in its flicker guidance; compare with direct viewing before assuming the panel is flashing.
Use a recording as a clue, not a verdict
If possible, start a screen recording while the symptom occurs and play it on another device. A glitch visible in the recording makes software, app rendering, or graphics output more plausible. If the recording looks normal but you saw flicker on the phone, a physical-display or brightness/refresh behavior becomes more plausible. This is not a definitive hardware test: a recording cannot capture every panel-level or refresh-related issue. Filming the phone with a second camera and checking whether the symptom appears on the lock screen, home screen, Settings, or during boot can add context.
Try the low-risk checks first
1. Stop if the phone may be unsafe or is deteriorating quickly
Stop charging and seek professional service if the phone is swollen, unusually hot, smoking, emitting an odor, wet or recently exposed to liquid, or has a rapidly expanding black or colored blotch. Flicker after a drop or crush, especially with severe damage, also calls for service rather than further testing. Do not press on or bend the screen, puncture the phone, or keep charging a visibly swollen device.

2. Restart, then check whether the symptom returns
A restart can clear a temporary app, graphics-process, or display-driver fault. It is a diagnostic first step, not proof that the underlying problem is repaired; note whether flicker returns and under what conditions.
3. Disconnect power and remove accessories temporarily
For flicker that occurs while charging, unplug the phone and test it again. Then, if needed, try a known-good compatible charger and cable. Compare wired charging, wireless charging, and no charging separately when relevant. If it remains warm, stop demanding tasks such as gaming, camera recording, navigation, or fast charging and let it return to normal temperature. Heat can be a trigger or aggravator, but does not explain every case.
Also test briefly without a thick or damaged case, magnetic mount or accessory, or poorly fitted screen protector. A protector is more relevant to touch or sensor interference than to persistent visible panel flashing. Google’s Pixel touch troubleshooting recommends checking the case, protector, screen cleanliness, and related factors when touch response is the issue.
4. Clean the screen and reduce heat
Wipe the display with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid extreme cooling: do not put the phone in a freezer. If flicker appears only during a hot or demanding session, let the device cool normally and see whether the symptom changes.

5. Test brightness and display features one at a time
If flicker is most visible at low brightness, raise brightness temporarily. Then test turning off Adaptive brightness or auto brightness, Extra dim, Night Light or Night Shift, and similar color or brightness filters. On Android models with the option, test Smooth Display, adaptive refresh rate, or a high-refresh-rate mode by changing one setting at a time. Accessibility color filters, flashing-light controls, magnification, and dimming features may also affect perceived display behavior.
A change may only mask a symptom, not repair the panel. Higher brightness can use more battery and create more heat; a lower refresh rate can make scrolling less fluid, and turning off adaptive brightness means adjusting manually. Some people notice low-brightness OLED behavior or brightness modulation more than others; discomfort alone does not establish a hardware defect. Samsung notes that flicker may be more noticeable at low brightness, while available settings differ by model, carrier, and software version in its U.S. troubleshooting guidance.
6. Update the operating system and apps
Install available system and app updates before considering a reset. Menu labels can vary by model and software version.
- iPhone: Back up first, then go to Settings > General > Software Update and install an offered iOS update. Restart and test again without accessories and with brightness automation temporarily changed.
- Google Pixel: Go to Settings > System > System update. Google advises updating for flickering, green tint, or lines and contacting support or arranging repair if they persist; see its Pixel display troubleshooting.
- Samsung Galaxy: Open Settings, choose Software update or System updates, then tap Download and install, Check for system updates, or the equivalent shown. Update affected apps through Galaxy Store or Google Play Store.
Isolate a problem app
If flicker began after an app was installed or updated, or occurs only in one app, update it, force-close and reopen it, and remove recent changes one at a time. On Android, clear that app’s cache if the option is available. Pay particular attention to screen dimmers, color filters, launchers, game boosters, battery managers, screen recorders, accessibility overlays, and apps allowed to draw over other apps.

Do not install a “screen-fixer” app as a repair attempt. Software cannot mend a physically damaged display panel, and an unnecessary app may request sensitive permissions or add overlays.
Use Android Safe Mode to test downloaded apps
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps and loads the phone’s original software. If flicker stops, a downloaded app is more likely involved; if it continues, a system setting, firmware issue, or hardware cause becomes more likely. Safe Mode does not prove the display is physically sound. Google explains this app-isolation test in its Android Safe Mode instructions.
Samsung’s Safe Mode steps
- Open the Power menu. If the phone has no conventional Power button, Samsung says to open the Power menu from the Quick panel.
- Touch and hold Power off.
- When Safe mode appears, tap it and test the phone in the same conditions that usually cause flicker.
- Restart normally to leave Safe Mode. Other Android manufacturers may use different steps; check the instructions for your model.
If the symptom disappears, restart normally and uninstall recently installed or updated apps first, rebooting and testing after each removal. If it returns after reinstalling one app, leave that app off the phone and report the issue to its developer. If flicker continues in Safe Mode, finish the update and settings checks, back up your data, and consider service.
Device-specific next steps
iPhone
After updating iOS and restarting, test without a case, charging accessories, or other add-ons that could be involved; temporarily adjust brightness automation and relevant display filters. The steps above are general checks, not an iPhone-specific flicker cure. If the symptom persists across the lock screen and built-in apps, use Apple’s repair options or its iPhone screen service flow. Final out-of-warranty charges depend on model and inspection; Apple says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer.

Samsung Galaxy
Use the Samsung update path above, test brightness and available display settings, and use Safe Mode to check for downloaded apps. If troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, Samsung offers repair service information; its U.S. page describes certified technicians, genuine parts, and a 90-day repair warranty. Cost depends on diagnosis, coverage, and repair type.
Google Pixel
Install available updates through Settings > System > System update. Google treats persistent flickering, green tint, or horizontal or vertical lines as possible hardware symptoms after update troubleshooting; follow its Pixel support and repair instructions if they remain.

A factory reset is a late-stage software test, after app isolation and updates—not a first fix. It erases locally stored data and downloaded apps, and it cannot repair physical damage.
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and app data; confirm account passwords and access to two-factor authentication.
- Do not start if the phone cannot be charged reliably or if physical damage makes continued use unsafe.
- After resetting, test the phone before restoring all apps. If flicker returns on a clean setup, a bad downloaded app is less likely.
- If the problem returns only after restoring apps, restore selectively and isolate the app or overlay that brings it back.
Samsung cautions that a reset may not permanently solve a problem caused by an app that could later be fixed in an update. A reset result is useful evidence, not a guarantee.

When to stop troubleshooting and arrange repair
Arrange manufacturer or qualified repair service rather than continuing to change settings if flicker persists in Android Safe Mode, appears during boot or across the lock screen and Settings, or returns immediately after a clean reset. Seek service sooner for cracks, impact or liquid exposure, green tint, colored lines, black spots, dead pixels, worsening symptoms, or unreliable touch. Flicker that continues during charging with a known-good charger and cable also merits diagnosis.
Before paying, check the exact phone’s warranty, AppleCare, Samsung coverage, or carrier/device protection plan. Coverage depends on the plan, model, purchase date, diagnosis, and whether the damage is accidental, liquid-related, or a suspected manufacturing fault. Apple’s estimates may require inspection, and authorized providers may set their own fees; Samsung says repair cost varies. There is no reliable universal screen-repair price for every U.S. phone. Use the manufacturer’s repair flow when parts, calibration, warranty, or service guarantees matter. Third-party repair may differ in parts, calibration, water-resistance sealing, biometric functions, warranty impact, and guarantees; do not assume opening a phone restores its original water resistance.
A new cable is worth testing only when flicker tracks charging, and a protector may help protect against future impact but will not repair a damaged panel. DIY display replacement is best left to people equipped for the risks of adhesive, calibration, sealing, and device-specific components. Consider replacing the phone only after comparing a specific repair estimate with the device’s condition and remaining support, not merely because a reversible software workaround has not yet been tried.
