Most podcasts are the official free exception. For music, a browser workaround may still work on some setups, while unofficial apps such as NewPipe and LibreTube offer another option with reliability and account-integration trade-offs.
These are three practical routes, not three equally dependable free replacements for YouTube Music Premium. The browser method became unreliable after Google’s February 2026 change, and unofficial front ends are not Google apps.
What counts as background playback?
Background playback means audio keeps going after you switch to another app or lock the screen. A useful setup should also expose Android media controls so you can pause, resume, or skip without reopening the player. Picture-in-picture is different: it keeps a small video window visible, and Google’s help documentation ties music-content PiP availability to Premium. It does not provide screen-off audio.
What works in the free YouTube Music app?
Ordinary songs and music videos do not play in the background in the official free Android app. Google lists background playback among YouTube Music Premium benefits. The free app does allow background playback for most podcasts, regardless of membership; feature availability can vary by country or region. There is no hidden setting in the official app that turns on free background music. Premium also includes ad-free music, audio-only playback, and downloads. Google describes the benefits at YouTube Premium benefits.
1. Play a podcast in the official app
If a podcast meets your listening need, this is the simplest supported free option.

- Open the official YouTube Music app.
- Search for a podcast or open one of its episodes.
- Start playback, then switch to another app or lock the phone.
- Use the Android media notification or lock-screen controls to pause or resume.
This applies to most podcasts, not regular music tracks. Podcast episodes may include creator-inserted promotions or ads, even for Premium listeners.
2. Test YouTube Music in a browser
Opening YouTube or YouTube Music in a mobile browser, starting a song, then minimizing the browser used to be a common workaround. It is no longer dependable: Google confirmed in February 2026 that non-Premium users would no longer receive background playback through mobile web browsers. Brave still advertises improved YouTube background playback in Android version 1.87 and newer, so behavior can differ by browser version, account, device, region, and YouTube rollout. Treat this as an experiment, not a fix you can rely on.

- Install or update Brave from Brave’s official download page.
- Open
youtube.comormusic.youtube.comin Brave. - Sign in only if you want to; signing in does not bypass Premium restrictions.
- Start a song or playlist, then minimize Brave or lock the phone.
- Check whether playback continues and Android shows media controls. If it stops, you can try Brave’s desktop-site option once, but it is not guaranteed to help.
Brave describes the feature in its Android YouTube improvements. The February 2026 change was reported by Android Central. A browser update or YouTube change can stop a workaround that worked previously.
3. Use an unofficial Android front end
NewPipe and LibreTube are third-party front ends for YouTube-hosted content, not official YouTube Music replacements. Their project documentation describes background playback. They do not grant YouTube Music Premium, and they may not reproduce the official app’s licensed catalog behavior, account library, or recommendations.

NewPipe: direct background audio without an account
The NewPipe project says the app supports YouTube and YouTube Music sources, background audio, and use without a YouTube account or Google Play Services. It can also offer audio-only playback. The project warns that NewPipe is in beta and may contain bugs; YouTube changes can interrupt playback until the app is updated. Details are in the NewPipe project and its player FAQ.
- Install NewPipe through the F-Droid client or obtain it from the official NewPipe project.
- Open the app and search for the artist, track, playlist, or channel.
- Open the item and choose the background-player option where available.
- Leave the app or lock the phone; use Android’s media controls for playback.
NewPipe is distributed outside Google Play. The F-Droid listing at NewPipe on F-Droid showed version 0.28.8 as the suggested version and Android 5.0 or newer as the requirement when the listing was checked in 2026. Versions and requirements can change, so check the current listing before installing. NewPipe does not provide official account synchronization, personalized mixes, or YouTube Music library features.

LibreTube: a privacy-oriented alternative
LibreTube is another unofficial YouTube front end. Its project describes background playback, while its F-Droid listing describes privacy features, use without a YouTube account or Google Services, and optional Piped support for loading and synchronization. Piped instances can be overloaded, unavailable, or blocked, and changes to YouTube or Piped can break playback. See the LibreTube project and LibreTube on F-Droid.
- Install LibreTube through the F-Droid client or an official project release channel.
- If prompted, select a Piped instance.
- Search for the YouTube-hosted music video, artist, or playlist you want.
- Start playback and select or enable background playback in the player controls if needed.
- Switch apps or lock the phone and test the Android media controls.
The F-Droid listing showed LibreTube version 31.4, added May 29, 2026, and an Android 8.0-or-newer requirement. Treat those as a dated release signal rather than a permanent specification. F-Droid warns that downloading an APK directly means you will not receive update notifications and is less secure than using its client.

- Only need podcasts? Use the free feature in the official app.
- Want to try a browser workaround? Test Brave, but do not depend on it for uninterrupted listening.
- Want free background music and accept unofficial software? Consider NewPipe or LibreTube, and install only through their official project channels or F-Droid.
- Need reliable playback, downloads, and synchronized music libraries? Use the official app with Premium.
When playback stops: check Android first
A supported background player can still be terminated by Android or a phone maker’s battery controls. Before concluding that the service itself is at fault, check these settings:
- Allow unrestricted battery usage for the app, if Android offers that option.
- Remove it from “sleeping apps” or “deep sleeping apps” lists on phones that have them.
- Allow notifications and foreground media playback.
- Check whether Data Saver is blocking background data.
- Reopen the app after an Android system update and test again with the screen locked and another app active.
For a complete test, confirm that audio continues over Bluetooth, Android shows media controls, pause/play/skip work, and playback resumes after a temporary network interruption. NewPipe and LibreTube may show different track information, artwork, or queue behavior from the official player.

What to avoid
- Do not install modified YouTube APKs from random download pages. Impersonation sites and bundled malware are a risk, and modified apps can create account and terms-of-service problems.
- Do not assume old Vanced or ReVanced instructions still work or are safe. Availability and behavior can change, and an APK asking for your Google password is not a trustworthy way to unlock Premium.
- Do not treat desktop mode as a guaranteed browser bypass; at most, test it once if ordinary browser playback fails.
- Do not confuse PiP with screen-off audio: PiP keeps a video window visible.
