Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program reports the error: a monitoring utility, MIB compiler, legacy installer, server tool, or an unrelated game or application.
- When it appears: during Windows startup, when launching one program, or while compiling an SNMP MIB.
- Your Windows version: Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server.
- Your application architecture: a 32-bit program can need a 32-bit component even on 64-bit Windows.
- Whether SNMP is actually required: many ordinary desktop applications never use this component.
smierrsm.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file. Its description is “WMI SNMP MIB Compiler Semantic Error Messages,” so the most likely repair is restoring the Windows SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider features, not installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
What smierrsm.dll does
smierrsm.dll belongs to the legacy Windows SNMP/WMI provider. It supplies message resources used by smi2smir.exe, Microsoft’s command-line compiler for SNMP information modules.
The compiler translates SNMP MIB data into WMI objects and checks MIB files for syntax and semantic problems. Microsoft documents this relationship in its guide to WMI and SNMP, as well as the smi2smir compiler.
That means this is a narrow administration component. It is mainly relevant to:

It is not a general gaming runtime. If a game or unrelated desktop program mentions smierrsm.dll, the program may be incorrectly checking for an old Windows component, or the error may be naming a dependency problem rather than identifying the real cause.
Is smierrsm.dll legitimate
Yes. The publisher is Microsoft Corporation, and the file is part of Microsoft Windows. Its obscurity does not make it malware.
A legitimate copy should be associated with the Windows SNMP/WMI component and should normally be found in a protected Windows system location or the relevant WMI/SNMP area. The exact path can vary by Windows release, architecture, servicing state, and installation history. Do not rely on a single path or historical file size.
Older records exist for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, but those binaries are not interchangeable with current Windows installations. Do not use an old version simply because its filename matches.

This is the most direct fix if the affected program actually uses SNMP, WMI, or MIB files.
Microsoft treats these as optional capabilities on current Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases:

Install through Windows Settings
Windows 11
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Open Optional features.
- Select View features beside Add an optional feature.
- Search for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
- Select it, choose Next, then click Add.
- Repeat the process for WMI SNMP Provider.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Find Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
- Select Install.
- Install WMI SNMP Provider using the same screen.
- Restart the computer.
On some older Windows 10 builds, the path may appear under Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. Microsoft’s current procedure and capability names are documented in its guide to adding the SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider features.

If the feature was already installed, removing and adding it again can repair a damaged optional-feature installation. Use Settings first, because removing a feature may affect monitoring software that depends on it.
Check the SNMP service
Installing the provider does not automatically mean SNMP is configured or running.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find SNMP Service, if it is present.
- Check its status and startup type.
- Start it only if the software requires active SNMP monitoring.
If the service is absent, the SNMP capability may not be installed correctly. If the provider installs but the service will not start, the problem is broader than the missing message-resource DLL.

If Windows says the feature name is unknown
Older instructions often use commands like:
dism /online /enable-feature /featureName:SNMP /featureName:WMISnmpProvider
Current Windows client releases may return error 0x800f080c because these deprecated items are handled as optional capabilities rather than those old feature names. Use Settings or Add-WindowsCapability instead.
If the capability is not offered at all, check Windows Update access, Feature-on-Demand source availability, Windows edition, and organizational policy. Do not substitute a DLL from another Windows release.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
If SNMP is installed but smierrsm.dll is missing, damaged, or still cannot load, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses as a source for protected-file repairs, while SFC checks and replaces damaged system files. Microsoft describes this sequence in its guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.

Use a matching repair source if DISM cannot find files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows Update may not be supplying the required repair content.
Microsoft documents using an alternative repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid repair source matching the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture as closely as possible. Details are available in Microsoft’s guide to repairing a Windows image.

Do not point DISM at an arbitrary Windows folder copied from another computer. A mismatched source can leave the component store in a worse state.
Fix 3: Identify whether the named DLL is really the problem
A message such as:
The program can't start because smierrsm.dll is missing from your computer.
usually indicates that Windows could not satisfy a file request. It does not prove that the named file itself is absent.
This message is different from an SNMP compiler diagnostic such as:

smi2smir: Semantic check failed on <file name>
A semantic compiler error concerns the contents of a MIB file, such as an invalid OID, import, syntax clause, or object relationship. Microsoft lists these diagnostics in its documentation for SNMP compiler error messages and errors 1011 through 1020.

If the file exists but Windows still reports “module not found”
Possible causes include:
- A dependent DLL is missing
- The application is the wrong architecture
- The file is in an unexpected directory
- The application has an incorrect search path
- The Windows component is only partially installed
- The file is damaged or has an invalid signature
Do not copy another DLL beside it immediately. Repair the relevant Windows capability first, then use the application’s own repair or reinstall option.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the program that triggers the error
If only one legacy monitoring tool, installer, script, or application reports the error, the program may be making an outdated assumption about SNMP.
Try the program’s built-in repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Open its menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options, if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If repair is unavailable:
- Uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Install a version compatible with your Windows release and application architecture.
- Reinstall the SNMP features if the program genuinely requires them.
If the program does not use SNMP, uninstalling it or removing its obsolete startup entry may be the correct solution. Do not install unrelated Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET packages based only on a generic DLL-error recommendation. Nothing in the identity of smierrsm.dll connects it to those runtimes.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and the file signature
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection, or malware can create a fake file with the same name.
Check quarantine
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
smierrsm.dll. - Note the original path and detection details.
- Update Microsoft Defender or your approved security product.
- Run a full scan.
Restore the file only after reviewing the detection, confirming the original path, and determining that it is a false positive. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to copy a downloaded DLL.
Check the digital signature
If you have a copy of the file, open PowerShell and run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:pathtosmierrsm.dll"
Replace the placeholder with the actual path.
A valid signature from Microsoft supports legitimacy, but the signature alone is not enough. Also check that the location is a protected Windows component directory rather than a random user-writable folder or an application directory that should not contain it.
A file with an invalid signature, an unexpected location, a slightly altered filename, or suspicious scan results should be quarantined and investigated rather than copied into System32.
Fix 6: Update Windows and check architecture
Windows servicing can restore optional components and correct compatibility problems.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Try the SNMP feature installation again.
For a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows, do not assume that installing one architecture automatically satisfies every program. The application, Windows component, and any dependencies must be compatible. Avoid manually moving files between System32 and SysWOW64; those directories are managed by Windows and their naming is not a simple “64-bit versus 32-bit” copy rule.

Device Manager is generally not the place to repair smierrsm.dll, because this is not a hardware driver. If the triggering software communicates with a network adapter or specialized monitoring hardware, you can still check Device Manager > Network adapters for device errors, but updating a network driver will not normally recreate this Windows message-resource DLL.
When a monitoring setup involves several hardware drivers, manually identifying the correct package and architecture can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while installation through the hardware manufacturer or Windows remains appropriate; the full version performs driver installation, and this step is not required for a standalone smierrsm.dll repair.

Fix 7: Install the equivalent feature on Windows Server
Windows Server uses server-specific feature management. Do not automatically use the Windows 10 or Windows 11 capability names on Server.
Use Server Manager:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Add Roles and Features.
- Continue through the wizard to Features.
- Select the SNMP-related feature available for that Server release.
- Install it.
- Restart if requested.
- Confirm that the SNMP service and WMI provider are present.
The exact feature label and PowerShell command depend on the Server generation. Use the feature name shown by Server Manager or Microsoft documentation for that release. If the component is unavailable, check the Server image, servicing source, edition, and organizational policy.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for libraries that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
smierrsm.dll is a message-resource DLL associated with the SNMP compiler. Microsoft does not instruct users to register it. Running this is therefore not a supported general fix:
regsvr32 smierrsm.dll
It may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the file needs a different registration command. Microsoft explains the scope of registration failures in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Never download a replacement DLL from a random site
Do not download smierrsm.dll from a DLL collection, file mirror, forum attachment, or “DLL fixer” and copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application directory
C:WindowsSystem32dllcache
That approach can introduce malware, the wrong architecture, the wrong language, or a binary from an unrelated Windows generation. It also leaves the Windows component store and servicing records inconsistent, so the original problem may remain.
The safe sources are Windows Optional Features, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, an installation source matching the exact Windows build, or a verified Microsoft recovery procedure. Microsoft describes advanced replacement of a protected file only when SFC identifies the exact file and a known-good copy from the same Windows build is available. That is not the same as downloading an arbitrary matching filename.

SNMP is required and the capability will not install
Check:
- Windows edition
- Windows Update connectivity
- Feature-on-Demand source configuration
- Organizational policy
- Available disk space
- Whether the feature exists for that Windows release
If DISM, SFC, and feature repair all fail, an in-place Windows repair installation may restore the component while preserving applications and personal files. Follow Microsoft’s current recovery guidance for the installed release.
The problem started after an update or cleanup
If System Restore points are available, restore to a point before the change. System Restore is a fallback, not the first replacement for repairing a protected Windows file.

FAQ
Is smierrsm.dll a virus
Not inherently. It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. Treat it as suspicious if it has an invalid Microsoft signature, appears in an unexpected writable directory, has a slightly altered name, or is flagged by current security software.
Which Windows feature installs it
It is associated with the SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider optional components. On current Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases, use the Optional Features interface or the Add-WindowsCapability commands.
Is it normally in System32 or SysWOW64
The exact location depends on Windows release, architecture, and servicing state. Historical installations place related files in Windows system and WMI/SNMP areas, but there is no safe universal path to assume. Verify the installed component rather than copying the file into a guessed directory.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it
No supported evidence connects those general runtimes to this file. Repair the Windows SNMP/WMI component instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer need it
No. The SNMP provider is not installed by default on supported Windows systems, and ordinary desktop users may never need it.
What if a MIB compiler reports a semantic error
That is probably a MIB-content problem rather than a missing DLL. Check the compiler diagnostic number, imports, OIDs, syntax clauses, and object definitions.
What if the error started after upgrading Windows
Install the current SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider capabilities, then run DISM followed by SFC. Do not reuse an XP, Vista, or Server 2008 binary on the newer installation.
What if the file still does not return
Confirm that the component is available for your edition, check Feature-on-Demand sources, review antivirus quarantine, and consider a Windows repair installation. If SNMP is unnecessary, remove the program that continues requesting the legacy component instead.
