If a site shows Access Denied while you’re running ESET NOD32 (or an ESET Internet Security equivalent), it’s usually not the website itself. ESET’s protection features—most often Web Access Protection, Web Control, the Firewall, or HTTPS filtering—are intercepting the connection and applying a block.
This guide walks you through the most reliable fixes: identifying the exact ESET component that blocked the URL, adding the correct exception, and resolving HTTPS/TLS certificate issues that frequently cause false positives. Follow the steps in order and stop as soon as the site loads.
Why you see Access Denied with ESET NOD32
“Access Denied” can appear when ESET blocks a URL by category, reputation, policy, or inspection rules. In many cases, the block is enforced by a module that inspects traffic and blocks based on URL patterns, IP reputation, or SSL/TLS behavior.
Common culprits include:
- Web Access Protection / Web Control (URL/category filtering)
- Firewall rules that prevent the browser or a process from reaching the site
- HTTPS filtering (TLS/SSL inspection) failing due to certificates, SNI, or pinning
- Parental controls or a user profile policy
- Corporate/network policies pushed via management (ESET PROTECT)
Before you change settings: prerequisites and quick checks
Start with fast checks that rule out non-ESET causes. You’ll save time if the issue is actually DNS, a cached browser failure, or a temporary site problem.

- Try a different browser (e.g., Edge vs Chrome vs Firefox). If only one browser fails, it’s often caching, extensions, or certificate storage.
- Open the same site on a mobile device using cellular data. If it works there, the site isn’t globally down.
- Check the exact domain and path. Copy the full URL shown on the error page, including subdomain (e.g.,
shop.example.comvsexample.com). - Confirm you’re logged into the same Windows user as the one running ESET. Policies can differ per account.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions (ad blockers, privacy tools, HTTPS-related extensions). Some can trigger ESET inspection edge cases.
Identify which ESET feature is blocking the site
ESET usually records blocked events. Identifying the event type tells you which settings panel to change (Web Access vs Firewall vs SSL filtering).
- Open ESET’s main window.
- Go to Tools → Event Log (or Advanced → Event Log, depending on your build).
- In the event filter/search, look for entries around the time you loaded the blocked URL.
- Look for wording such as Web access, Web control, URL, HTTP/S, Network traffic, Firewall, or SSL.
If you can’t find a clear match, use the next method to allow the URL in Web Access Protection first, then move to HTTPS filtering if it still fails.
Fix method 1: Allow the site in Web Access Protection
This is the most common fix when the block is category or URL-based. The exact menu names vary slightly across ESET versions, but the flow is consistent.
Steps (ESET NOD32 Antivirus / ESET Internet Security)
- Open ESET.
- Go to Settings → Web and Email (or Web Control, depending on your product).
- Find Web Access Protection (or Web Control).
- Open Exceptions (sometimes under an Advanced link).
- Click Add.
- Paste the blocked domain (or full URL) exactly as it appears. If your error is for a subdomain, include it (example:
pay.example.com). - Choose Action: Allow (or ensure it’s not set to Block).
- Save changes by clicking OK, then restart the browser.
If your product supports pattern matching, prefer the most specific value that still covers the site. Over-broad exceptions can weaken protection.

If ESET is blocking the connection at the network level, adding a Web Access exception won’t help. You’ll need to inspect firewall behavior for the browser and related processes.

Steps to check Firewall blocks
- In ESET, open Settings → Network → Firewall.
- Look for Rules or Manage rules.
- Search the rule list for your browser executable (commonly
chrome.exe,msedge.exe,firefox.exe) or for recent connection attempts. - If you see a rule set to Block for the browser/process, update it to Allow and apply changes.
Also check Web Control under the Web and Email area. Some ESET builds separate “web access” category filtering from “web control” behavior for specific protocols.
Fix method 3: Resolve HTTPS (TLS/SSL) filtering issues
Many “Access Denied” pages are triggered by HTTPS inspection. Websites using certificate pinning, strict TLS settings, or newer handshake behaviors can fail when ESET intercepts the connection.
Step 1: Confirm HTTPS filtering is involved
Return to Tools → Event Log and search for entries mentioning SSL, TLS, or HTTPS. If those appear, you’re likely dealing with filtering rather than simple URL/category rules.
Step 2: Exclude the domain from HTTPS filtering (preferred)
- Open Settings.
- Go to Web and Email → SSL/TLS or HTTPS scanning (exact wording varies).
- Find Exclusions or Exceptions.
- Click Add and enter the domain that’s blocked (include subdomain if needed).
- Apply changes, then restart the browser.
Step 3: If exclusions aren’t available, adjust filtering mode carefully
Some ESET builds let you switch HTTPS scanning behavior. If you must temporarily reduce scanning:
- Open Settings → Web and Email → HTTPS scanning.
- Look for options such as Block unsafe SSL/TLS vs Scan all HTTPS.
- Set to the least permissive option that allows the site, then retest.
A full disable of HTTPS inspection can reduce protection; only do this to isolate the cause, then revert.

Fix method 4: Clear browser cache and DNS locally
Even after you add an exception, the browser may keep a failed connection state, especially if there’s a redirect chain or an HTTP error cached.
Browser cache
- In your browser, open Settings → Privacy & security.
- Choose Clear browsing data.
- Select at least Cached images and files.
- Clear and reload the page.
Windows DNS flush
- Press Win + R, type
cmd, press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to run as administrator. - Run:
ipconfig /flushdns
Then reopen the browser and try the URL again.
Fix method 5: If the block is category-based or policy-based
If ESET is blocking categories (for example, “adult,” “gambling,” “phishing,” or “unknown”), allowing only a single URL may not fully work if the site redirects to other domains.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check redirect targets
- Copy the full URL and inspect it in a text editor.
- If the site redirects, try the final destination URL directly (the domain you ultimately land on).
- Add exceptions for the final domain(s), not only the first link.
Check user profile or parental control
- In ESET settings, look for Parental Control / User profiles features (names vary).
- Confirm you changed the policy for the same Windows profile/account that’s currently used.
Fix method 6: Temporary exclusions to confirm the cause
If you can’t tell which feature is blocking, a controlled test prevents you from making blind changes.
Approach A: Exclude the browser process (temporary)
- In ESET, go to Tools → Advanced settings.
- Find process exclusions under the relevant protection module (often under Web/SSL/Threat protection advanced pages).
- Add the browser executable (e.g.,
chrome.exe) as a temporary exclusion. - Test the blocked site. If it works, you know the block is inside that module’s inspection layer.
- Remove the exclusion after you apply a targeted domain exception.
Approach B: Allow only the domain first
This is cleaner than process exclusions. Domain allows usually survive browser and OS changes better, and they keep the exception scope tight.
Common mistakes that keep blocks from lifting
- Adding the wrong hostname: using
example.comwhen the error is forwww.example.comor a subdomain. - Missing redirects: allowing only the landing page while redirects are blocked elsewhere.
- Over-broad exceptions: allowing entire categories or many wildcard domains, which can be dangerous and may be rejected by your org’s policy.
- Not saving the exception: clicking out of the dialog without applying changes.
- Testing too fast: some ESET settings require a browser restart (and occasionally a Windows reboot) to fully refresh connections.
Troubleshooting when the site is still blocked
If the site still shows “Access Denied” after you add an exception, do the checks below in order. Each step narrows the problem quickly.

- Verify the exception is actually active: re-open the Exceptions list and confirm the allow entry appears exactly as entered.
- Test in Incognito/InPrivate: it reduces interference from cache and extensions. If Incognito works, you likely have a cached failure or extension conflict.
- Switch networks: try another Wi-Fi and then cellular tethering. If it works on another network, you may also be dealing with a network proxy or policy.
- Check ESET modules: open Event Log again. If you see a new block event of a different type (e.g., SSL instead of URL), adjust the corresponding setting.
- Update ESET: in ESET, go to Update and run Check for updates. Date-based detection and SSL rules can improve after updates.
- Reboot: restart Windows if you changed SSL/HTTPS scanning settings. Some inspection engines refresh after reboot.
- Reset ESET’s browser protection components (if your build includes them): reinstall ESET browser extensions (if present) or remove/restore the integration if it’s failing.
If the event log provides the exact block reason, you can match it to the right panel and avoid unnecessary changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSecurity and best practices for adding exceptions
Exceptions should be precise and temporary when you’re debugging. A correct allowlist rule is better than disabling broad protections.
- Prefer domain-level exceptions for the specific host that fails.
- Avoid wildcarding whole TLDs (e.g., allow
.example.com) unless you fully trust that scope. - Use HTTPS scanning exclusions sparingly—only for sites that break inspection.
- Re-test after ESET updates. A false positive can be corrected by a signature update, and you may be able to remove the exception.
FAQ
Why does the site load when I disable ESET, but not when it’s enabled?
That almost always means ESET is blocking at the inspection layer (Web Access/Web Control) or HTTPS filtering is failing. Check Event Log for entries referencing SSL/TLS, URL, or Web Control, then add the correct exception.
Should I allow the full URL or just the domain?
Start with the domain (including the correct subdomain). If the site uses multiple subdomains, allow each host that triggers the error. Full URL rules work too, but they’re easier to miss when redirects happen.
Do I need to clear my browser cache after adding an exception?
Often yes. If the browser cached an error response or redirect chain, it can keep showing “Access Denied” until cache is cleared and the page is reloaded (Incognito/InPrivate helps).

Is it safe to disable HTTPS scanning to fix Access Denied?
It’s a useful diagnostic step, but not ideal as a long-term setting. The safer path is to add a domain exception to HTTPS filtering so ESET continues to inspect other sites.
What if this is a work or school laptop?
If policies are managed via ESET PROTECT, your local settings might be overridden. In that case, you may need an admin to approve an allow rule or category adjustment.
Bottom Line
To fix an ESET NOD32 blocked website showing Access Denied, identify the module from the Event Log, then add a targeted allow exception for the exact hostname. If the block involves HTTPS, use an HTTPS/TLS filtering exclusion for that domain instead of disabling protection broadly.
Make changes in small steps, retest with Incognito, and keep exceptions as narrow as possible so you don’t weaken your overall security posture.
