The right choice depends on whether you want a bundled service, managed WordPress, or control over your own hosting and site stack—not on a blanket claim that one platform is best.
First, decide which WordPress you mean
“WordPress” refers to two different routes. WordPress.com is a managed hosted service. WordPress.org distributes free software that you install with a hosting provider you choose. WordPress.com Support, last reviewed August 11, 2026, explains that with WordPress.org you can download the source code and upload it with a hosting provider of your choice.
That distinction changes the comparison: WordPress.com bundles hosting and management, while self-hosted WordPress.org gives you more decisions and responsibility. Wix is a hosted website platform with hosting and built-in site and business tools, according to its official comparison.
Wix vs WordPress: the practical differences
| Decision | Wix | WordPress.com | WordPress.org, self-hosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting and upkeep | Hosting is included; Wix says its service handles backend setup. Wix | Managed hosting, updates, security, and backups are described as included. WordPress.com Support | You select and pay a third-party host and manage more of the setup. WordPress.com Support |
| Customization | Templates, the App Market, and Velo development tools. Wix | Theme and plugin access depends on the plan; WordPress.com describes plugin installation on its comparison page. WordPress.com | You choose the host, themes, and plugins, with scope for deeper technical changes. WordPress.com Support |
| SEO | Built-in SEO tools. Wix | Built-in tools and access to plugins, as described by WordPress.com. WordPress.com | Tools depend on the extensions and hosting you choose. WordPress.com Support |
| Ecommerce | Business and ecommerce tools; check which plan includes the features you need. Wix Wix pricing | WordPress.com describes selling on paid plans and WooCommerce options. WordPress.com | Depends on the software stack and its configuration. WordPress.com Support |
| Moving away | Wix’s comparison page says it does not offer a full-site export. WordPress.com comparison | WordPress.com says you can export content; that does not necessarily transfer your complete design, structure, and functionality. WordPress.com | WordPress documentation says users own and may move content; migration depends on the host and implementation. WordPress.com Support |
| Cost structure | Plan, billing term, location, domain renewal, and features affect the cost. Wix pricing | Compare the plan and billing interval shown for your market. WordPress.com | Add hosting, domain, any paid themes or plugins, and maintenance to the free software. WordPress.com Support |
Which one is easier to use?
Wix is a plausible choice if you want a guided setup with hosting and site tools gathered in one service. With WordPress.com, management is also bundled, but available customization depends on the plan. Self-hosted WordPress adds choices—such as hosting, themes, and plugins—and the work of setting them up and managing the site.

Ease is therefore partly an operations question: do you want one provider to handle more of the infrastructure, or do you want to choose and maintain more of the stack? More options can be useful, but they also mean more decisions.
Which is better for a small business or online store?
For a business that wants an integrated website and business-tool service, Wix is a reasonable candidate. Its official pages describe ecommerce tools, but the plan determines which features are available; confirm that the specific selling, payment, or business functions you need are included before choosing.
Rank #2
WordPress.com describes selling on paid plans and WooCommerce options. With WordPress.org, ecommerce depends on the software and hosting you select and configure. Neither label alone tells you the full cost or how much setup your store will require.
Is Wix or WordPress better for SEO?
Both platform families offer SEO-related tools: Wix describes built-in tools, while WordPress.com describes built-in tools and plugin access. Self-hosted WordPress users can choose extensions, but the available setup varies. The official sources cited here do not establish that a platform by itself guarantees higher search rankings, so choose based on the tools and operating model you can use effectively rather than a promised ranking advantage.

What does each option really cost in 2026?
There is no fair universal price winner without specifying the site, country, currency, billing interval, domain-renewal assumptions, and required features. Wix says plan features and pricing depend on plan and project scope; its pricing page describes a one-year domain voucher on many yearly or multiyear plans, subject to eligibility. WordPress.com displays plan prices across billing intervals, so check the current offer for your market.
WordPress.org software is free, but a working self-hosted site still needs separately paid hosting and may need a domain, paid themes or plugins, and ongoing maintenance. Compare complete working setups over the same period, including the time you expect to spend managing the site; the official pages cited here do not establish an equivalent total cost for a defined site.
Rank #4
Can you move a Wix site to WordPress?
WordPress.com says users can export content, while its comparison page says Wix does not offer a full-site export. These are statements from WordPress.com’s own vendor comparison, not an independent migration audit. A content export is not the same as a complete transfer: the design, structure, and functionality may need to be rebuilt or handled separately.
For self-hosted WordPress, moving content is possible, but the process depends on the source material, the destination host, and how the site is implemented. If portability matters, identify what must move—such as text, media, layout, and store behavior—before choosing a platform, and plan for more than a content file.

How to choose
- Choose Wix if you want a hosted, integrated platform and prefer its bundled setup and built-in tools.
- Choose WordPress.com if you want managed WordPress hosting and support, and the plan’s customization and selling options meet your needs.
- Choose WordPress.org if you want to select hosting, themes, and plugins and are willing to handle more setup and maintenance.
Do not compare WordPress.org’s free software price with a paid Wix or WordPress.com plan as if they were complete, equivalent services. The meaningful comparison is between the finished site each route can provide, its ongoing costs, and the work you are prepared to do.
