A black Watir screenshot does not identify one specific failure. First record the exact browser, driver, Watir and Selenium versions, then check that the page is ready, compare another browser or execution mode, and collect logs. Change one factor at a time: synchronization, driver behavior, headless rendering and background execution are all worth isolating, but none is a universal explanation.
What “Watir-WebDriver” means today
“Watir-WebDriver” is legacy terminology. The Watir project says that code moved into the watir gem, and active Watir is based on Selenium. If you are following an old example, check its version assumptions before copying its setup or browser options. Watir’s changelog records that Watir 7.3.0, released August 4, 2023, fixed its headless implementation to work with Selenium 4.11.0; that is a specific compatibility note, not a guarantee that every older or newer combination behaves alike. Start by identifying what you mean by “black.” Is the whole image uniformly black, or is the browser viewport black while some page content appears elsewhere? Is the file empty or unusually small, or does it open as a valid image with black pixels? Preserve the original file and note where in the test the capture occurs. Those distinctions help separate a rendering or session problem from a capture made before the expected page state.
Record the environment and make a minimal reproduction
Before changing flags or upgrading packages, write down the complete stack. A report that says only “Watir screenshot is black” leaves too many variables unresolved. Record:

- Ruby, Watir and Selenium versions.
- Browser name and version, plus the driver name and version.
- Operating system and version.
- Whether the session is local or remote, and whether it runs headed or headless.
- Whether the process runs in a terminal, CI job, scheduled task or background service, and how that process is launched.
- The URL or a safe minimal page, the action sequence before capture, the screenshot code, and the time at which the capture occurs.
Reduce the test to a single browser session, one page, one readiness check and one screenshot. Keep the failing setup intact as a baseline. Then alter just one condition per run—such as browser, headless mode or launch context—so the result points to a useful difference rather than a bundle of simultaneous changes.
A small Ruby reproduction
Adapt this example to your installed Watir version and the browser you have configured. It opens a page, waits for a known element, then saves a screenshot. The wait is illustrative: replace the selector and expected text with a state that actually proves your page is ready.

endUse a page and browser supported by your own installation; the example is not a claim that Chrome, a particular driver release or a particular option fixes black output. If your project uses a remote browser or a different launch configuration, keep that configuration in the reproduction and report it.

Check that the page is ready before capturing
A screenshot taken while navigation or client-side rendering is still in progress can capture an intermediate state. Selenium’s troubleshooting page says, “The most common Selenium-related error is a result of poor synchronization.” That is a general troubleshooting cue, not proof that timing caused every black screenshot. Wait for a meaningful condition: a page-specific heading, a result row, an application-ready marker, or another element that appears only after the content you need is rendered. A generic page load completing may not mean that asynchronous application work, images or other content has finished. Prefer a condition-based wait over a permanent long fixed sleep. A short fixed delay can be a temporary diagnostic: if it changes the result, investigate what is still loading and replace the delay with an observable condition.
Also confirm what the test observes immediately before capture. Log the page title, check that the expected element is present, and, if useful, save page source or inspect a harmless known element’s text. If the browser session itself is blank or showing a browser error, the screenshot is only reflecting the current page state; diagnose navigation and session setup first.

Compare browsers and their drivers
Repeat the minimal case with another supported browser and its corresponding driver, changing no other part of the test if possible. Selenium recommends trying multiple browsers to help rule out driver problems. If only one browser/driver pairing produces the black image, focus investigation there; if the same symptom occurs across browsers, look next at shared factors such as readiness, session launch context or remote execution. Neither result alone proves a root cause.
Check that your installed Watir, Selenium, browser and driver versions are compatible with the options and APIs in your code. Upgrade notes matter: an example written for an older Watir/Selenium combination may use assumptions that no longer apply, and newer options should not be pasted into an older stack without checking its documentation. The Watir changelog’s specific Watir 7.3.0 and Selenium 4.11.0 note is one reason to capture exact versions rather than report “latest.”

Compare headed, headless, local and background runs
When feasible, run the same reproduction headed and headless, then interactively and in the environment where it fails. Hold the page, browser/driver versions and test steps constant. Change one axis at a time. Keep a small result record such as “headed/local: normal; headless/local: black; headed/background: normal”; the pattern is more diagnostic than changing several settings together.

Headless is a comparison, not a universal culprit
Watir’s headless guide warns that browser headless implementations have limitations and are not exact replications of what users see in a real browser. Treat a difference between headed and headless output as evidence about the environment to investigate, not as proof that headless mode always causes black screenshots. The guide was last updated August 6, 2018, so use it cautiously for browser-specific details and verify current options against the versions you actually run. See Watir’s headless guide.
Background execution deserves its own test
A historical SeleniumHQ issue describes a black screenshot on Windows 10 with Internet Explorer 11 and Selenium Server 2.53.1 or 3.0.1. The reporter said manually starting the Hub and Node worked, while running them in the background produced the symptom. The issue, opened December 2, 2016, documents no resolution. It is a reason to compare interactive and background execution when relevant—not evidence of a current, general Windows or service-session rule. Read the historical issue report in that limited context.

If the comparisons do not isolate the problem, keep the smallest failing test and capture the full error output and useful debug logs. Watir’s Help page asks users seeking assistance to include relevant versions, code, HTML, full errors and useful logs. Include only HTML and logs you are allowed to share; redact credentials, session cookies, private URLs and personal data.

A strong report states the exact reproduction steps and which comparisons you ran. Attach the original screenshot if appropriate, and say whether each run was local or remote, headed or headless, interactive or background. Report what changed and what did not. Do not present a flag, window size or driver swap as a fix unless you have verified that it addresses your specific stack.

What to conclude from the results
A black image is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Use the comparisons to narrow the failing layer: page readiness, a particular browser/driver stack, headed versus headless rendering, or interactive versus remote/background launch. The evidence does not establish one best browser or a universal workaround. Preserve the versioned reproduction and use it to decide what to investigate next.
