Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor serious pump-out, the best thermal interface is usually not conventional paste: use a genuine phase-change material such as Honeywell PTM7950, or the clearly identified Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet PTM alternative. If you specifically need syringe-applied paste, Thermal Grizzly Duronaut Pro is the strongest pump-out-focused candidate based on its manufacturer’s long-term-stability and particle-geometry claims. ARCTIC MX-6 is the better value option, while Noctua NT-H2 is the easiest conservative choice.
These are recommendations for maintaining contact through repeated heating and cooling, not a universal ranking of lowest first-run temperature.
What pump-out is—and why a new repaste can worsen later
Pump-out is the gradual movement of thermal interface material away from the most important contact area. During a heat cycle, the chip, substrate, heat spreader and cooler expand at different rates. The interface is compressed and sheared while hot, then contracts as the system cools. Repetition can leave a thinner or dry area over the die, increasing thermal resistance.
- The chip heats and expands.
- The cooler and substrate expand differently.
- Mechanical pressure squeezes and shears the interface.
- Cooling reverses the movement.
- After many cycles, material migrates from the center or forms voids.
Pump-out is a system problem, not only a paste problem. Mounting pressure, screw tension, cooler stiffness, surface flatness, die geometry, bond-line thickness, viscosity and thermal-expansion mismatch all affect the result. Direct-die GPUs and laptops are particularly vulnerable because contact areas are small and thermal cycling can be severe.

Best overall: a phase-change thermal material
A phase-change sheet is supplied as a thin cut-to-size film rather than syringe grease. It is solid at room temperature and softens or liquefies at operating temperature, forming a thin interface under pressure. It is not the same as a thick VRAM or VRM gap-filling pad.
Honeywell PTM7950
Honeywell lists PTM7950 for CPU and GPU applications and describes its phase-change materials as providing high reliability without pump-out issues. Honeywell’s technical information gives the pad formulation a phase-transition temperature around 45°C, lists nominal thicknesses of 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm, and reports approximately 8.5 W/m·K thermal conductivity. Conductivity alone does not predict a processor’s final temperature; thickness, pressure and contact quality matter more in a particular installation.
Use genuine material from a traceable seller. Marketplace listings can differ in provenance, cutting accuracy, packaging and authenticity, and a product title containing “PTM7950” is not proof that it is Honeywell material. Honeywell’s technical documents are primarily industrial documentation rather than a normal consumer checkout. One consumer listing observed for this article was the LTT Store’s PTM7950 page at $99.99 on the retrieved page; price and availability can change.

Best conventional paste: Thermal Grizzly Duronaut Pro
When a syringe-applied compound is mandatory, Duronaut Pro is the most directly pump-out-focused choice in this group. Thermal Grizzly says its aluminum and zinc-oxide formulation, particle shape and particle size minimize pump-out and were developed for exceptional long-term stability. The product page lists electrical conductivity as 0 pS/m and offers 2 g, 6 g and 30 g sizes. The 2 g official-store price observed was $20.94.
Recommended Free Tools
Those are manufacturer claims, not independent proof that Duronaut Pro outlasts every paste in every mounting system. It can be excessive for an ordinary desktop CPU whose cooler has rigid, even pressure; its strongest rationale is a pump-out-prone laptop, direct-die chip or GPU when a sheet is impractical.
Best value paste: ARCTIC MX-6
ARCTIC describes MX-6 as a high-viscosity compound whose viscosity is intended to prevent leakage caused by the pump-out effect. It is listed in 2 g, 4 g and 8 g variants. ARCTIC says the cooler’s mounting pressure should spread it and that manual spatula spreading is not possible or recommended because of the viscosity.

- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
- SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
- EFFORTLESS CLEANING WITH MX CLEANER: Removes old thermal paste thoroughly, preparing contact surfaces for optimal performance. Also available as a convenient bundle with MX-7
That makes MX-6 a practical, widely available choice for cost-conscious CPU and GPU owners. The anti-pump-out wording is an intended design benefit, not an absolute guarantee. A Tom’s Hardware deal page showed approximately $7.98 against a listed $13.99 reference price, but that was a retailer signal rather than an ARCTIC direct price.

Best easy, conservative choice: Noctua NT-H2
NT-H2 is a hybrid compound positioned around easy application, broad compatibility and long-term stability. Noctua specifies compatibility with copper, aluminum and nickel-plated cooler bases and describes the compound as non-conductive. The range includes 3.5 g, 3.5 g AM5 Edition and 10 g packages; Noctua says the standard 3.5 g package covers approximately three to 20 applications depending on CPU size.
The AM5 Edition includes a paste guard designed to reduce mess around the cutouts in AMD AM5 heat spreaders. NT-H2 is not the most targeted answer to severe GPU or laptop pump-out, but its predictable handling and electrical safety make it a sensible general-purpose repaste.

Which material fits your hardware?
| Situation | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop CPU with a large IHS | MX-6, NT-H2 or Duronaut Pro | Rigid, even mounting often makes conventional paste sufficient. |
| Laptop CPU or GPU | Genuine PTM7950 or PhaseSheet PTM | Direct-die contact, small areas and repeated cycling favor phase-change material. |
| Desktop GPU hotspot problem | PTM7950 or PhaseSheet PTM | Better long-term direction when migration or uneven die contact is suspected. |
| Direct-die cooling | Phase-change material, if thickness and coverage match | Complete coverage and precise pressure are critical. |
| Paste required | Duronaut Pro; MX-6 for value; NT-H2 for easiest handling | Choose according to pump-out priority, cost and application preference. |
| Extreme overclocking benchmark | Product selected for the specific test | Peak short-term temperature is a different goal from long-term cycling resistance. |
Do not replace GPU-core interface material with VRAM or VRM pads indiscriminately. Their thickness and compression are separate design requirements.
Why Kryonaut Extreme and liquid metal are not default answers
Thermal Grizzly positions Kryonaut Extreme for extreme overclocking and cryogenic use. A high result in a short benchmark does not establish superior resistance to months of pump-out. Tom’s Hardware also cautions that its newer testing equipment and stress tests are not directly comparable with its older rankings; its current results place MX-6 among strong traditional pastes but do not prove long-term pump-out superiority.
Liquid metal can deliver excellent temperatures, but it is electrically conductive, requires careful containment, can react with or damage aluminum, and is less forgiving of installation errors. It is viable for experienced users with compatible hardware, not the general low-maintenance recommendation. Noctua contrasts NT-H2’s non-conductive safety with those risks.

Conventional paste
- Remove the cooler and clean the die or heat spreader and cooler base with high-purity isopropyl alcohol and lint-free material.
- Inspect for contamination, warped surfaces, damaged brackets or uneven contact.
- Apply the manufacturer’s recommended amount or a small central deposit sized for the IHS. For MX-6, let mounting pressure spread the paste rather than using a spatula.
- Lower the cooler straight down without sliding it across the paste.
- Tighten multiple screws gradually in a cross pattern.
- Record temperatures using the same workload, power limit, fan or pump curve, ambient conditions and test duration used for comparison.
Phase-change sheet
- Confirm the original interface thickness and the required active contact area. Never assume a laptop’s CPU/GPU sheet replaces surrounding gap pads.
- Cut a clean piece that covers the die or IHS without extending onto nearby components.
- Leave protective films on until positioning; do not touch the active material.
- Place it flat with no folds, wrinkles, dust, trapped air or overlapping layers.
- Remove the remaining film, install the cooler with even pressure and tighten its screws evenly.
- Run several warm-up and cool-down cycles before judging the result. A phase-change sheet may not visibly change at idle if the component never reaches its transition temperature.
How to verify that pump-out is actually the problem
A rising temperature after repasting is not proof of pump-out. First repeat the comparison under controlled conditions: same ambient temperature, case configuration, workload, power limit, fan or pump curve, sensor and warm-up state.

- EASY TO APPLY: BSFF thermal paste has ideal consistency and is very easy to use even for beginners
- Check whether CPU package temperature, GPU core temperature and GPU hotspot were measured consistently.
- Inspect cooler screws, springs, backplate and bracket for looseness or flex.
- Check for dust, a failing fan or pump, changed fan curves, higher ambient temperature or a changed workload.
- After removal, examine the contact pattern. A displaced center or visibly dry region is more informative than paste that merely looks dry.
- If core temperature is acceptable but hotspot temperature is high, investigate uneven die contact, cooler-base geometry, pressure distribution and incorrect surrounding pad thickness.
A phase-change material cannot repair a warped cooler, damaged vapor chamber, loose mounting assembly or incorrectly sized neighboring pads.
Common installation problems
Temperatures are worse immediately
Verify that every protective film was removed, the sheet covers the complete die, there are no wrinkles or air pockets, the cooler is seated evenly and the correct surrounding pad thickness is installed. For paste, check the amount and screw sequence.
The pad appears not to melt
The component may not reach the transition temperature, the sheet may be incorrectly installed or too thick, or the product may be mislabeled. Surface appearance alone does not show what is happening inside the bond line.
A paste looks dry after removal
Thick compounds can look dry without having failed. Use temperature trends and contact patterns, not appearance alone, to diagnose the interface.

Choose genuine Honeywell PTM7950 or Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet PTM for the strongest general solution to pump-out-prone CPU, GPU and laptop applications. If you require conventional paste, choose Duronaut Pro for the most explicit anti-pump-out positioning, MX-6 for value, or NT-H2 for easy, electrically safe installation. Correct mounting hardware, interface thickness and controlled testing matter at least as much as switching between two reputable compounds.
