Sketchbook vs. Procreate: Which Drawing App Should You Choose in 2026?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Procreate if you already have a compatible iPad and want an illustration-focused painting app with built-in animation and 3D tools. Choose Sketchbook if you need Windows, Mac, or Android support, prefer sketch-first simplicity, or want to start without buying an iPad. The app once commonly called Autodesk SketchBook is now generally branded Sketchbook; it is a cross-platform product, while Procreate’s main drawing app is built for iPad.

Sketchbook vs. Procreate at a glance

Question Sketchbook Procreate
Main strength Cross-platform sketching and painting, including desktop use iPad-focused illustration and painting workflow
Platforms Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS iPad; the main app is not a Windows, macOS, or Android drawing program
Starting cost Core app available without the former Autodesk subscription model; some mobile features require Premium Paid iPad app; check the App Store for the current price in your region
Animation FlipBook tools in SketchBook Pro Desktop; capabilities vary by platform Animation Assist in the main app; Procreate Dreams is a separate product
3D painting Not positioned as a 3D texturing app Supported on compatible iPads
Best fit Desktop users, Android artists, and people who want device flexibility Artists committed to an iPad and its illustration ecosystem

In the version snapshot documented by each company, Sketchbook listed Windows 9.4.7, macOS 9.4.13, Android 6.2.6, and iOS 6.2.8; its release notes date version 6.2.8 to May 31, 2026. Procreate’s official FAQ lists version 5.4.12, requiring iPadOS 16.3 or newer. These are dated product details, not guarantees that every device can run the apps; check the current store listing and requirements before installing. Sketchbook system requirements · Sketchbook release notes · Procreate FAQ

Which devices can run each app?

Sketchbook: desktop and mobile

Sketchbook supports Windows 10 and 11 on x64 or ARM hardware, with 8 GB RAM recommended and OpenGL 2.0 GPU support. Sketchbook Pro 9.2 and newer runs natively on Windows ARM PCs. On Mac, it requires macOS 12 Monterey or newer and supports Apple Silicon or a 2.4 GHz Intel processor; 8 GB RAM is recommended. The mobile requirements are Android 9 or newer and iOS 14 or newer. Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil Pro work with compatible iPads. Stylus pressure and other input features still depend on the device and operating system, so confirm your hardware against the official requirements.

Procreate: compatible iPads

The main Procreate app requires an iPad able to run iPadOS 16.3 or newer, according to its FAQ. That operating-system requirement does not mean every iPad that can be updated will deliver the same performance or layer capacity. Check the app’s current compatibility listing and your iPad’s available storage before committing. Procreate is not the choice for a Windows, Mac, or Android desktop workflow.

What do the apps cost?

Sketchbook: free core access, with paid mobile features

Sketchbook’s consumer app is available through the Microsoft Store, Mac App Store, Apple App Store, and Google Play. Its core app is no longer sold under the old Autodesk-style consumer subscription model. On mobile, an optional Premium Bundle unlocks features such as custom brushes and brush import/export, palette import/export, canvas resizing and print-resolution controls, layer grouping, clipping masks, additional adjustments, Lasso Fill, and PDF export. The company describes this as a one-time in-app purchase, not a subscription. See Sketchbook apps and Premium Bundle features.

A price signal on Sketchbook’s direct licensing page lists Sketchbook Premium on iOS at US$2.99 as a one-time purchase, and desktop enterprise and education licensing at US$24.99 per seat per year, with a 10-seat minimum for enterprise purchases. These are the prices shown on that page as checked August 18, 2026—not universal consumer prices. Storefront, country, currency, and taxes can change what an individual buyer pays; check the listing for your device. The enterprise price is not the ordinary consumer purchase route. Sketchbook licensing information.

Procreate: app purchase plus possible hardware cost

Procreate is a paid App Store product. Its current US price is not established by the official help pages cited here, so check the App Store listing in your region rather than relying on an old comparison article. If you do not already own a compatible iPad and suitable stylus, include those costs in your decision: the app’s price alone does not represent the cost of starting an iPad-based setup.

How do drawing and interface workflows differ?

Sketchbook keeps the focus on sketching

Sketchbook describes its interface as streamlined and unobtrusive, with tools including customizable brushes, guides, rulers, stroke tools, layers, and blend modes. That makes it a natural fit for quick ideation or for artists who want the canvas to dominate the screen. On desktop, it also fits workflows built around a computer, graphics tablet, or pen display. Sketchbook’s product overview.

Procreate is designed around the iPad

Procreate emphasizes direct manipulation on the iPad, including a gesture-based workflow and quick access to painting, selection, transform, adjustment, and animation features. Artists who are new to its gestures and menus may need time to learn them. The practical comparison is not that one interface is objectively easier: it is whether you want a cross-platform canvas, often used with desktop-style input, or a tablet-centered drawing studio.

Which has better brushes and painting tools?

Neither app has objectively better brushes for every artist; the result depends on the marks, textures, and tools you prefer. Sketchbook highlights pencils, markers, airbrushes, paint brushes, and smear tools. Brush customization is available, while brush creation, organization, and import/export depend on the platform and edition. Its Premium Bundle adds brush creation and brush import/export on mobile. Sketchbook app features · Sketchbook brush documentation.

Procreate offers a broad brush library and a redesigned brush system in version 5.4. Its appeal is especially strong for artists who value painting effects, texture work, brush management, and an established collection of third-party brushes and tutorials. Sketchbook may suit someone who prioritizes a pencil-and-sketch feel. Try representative brushes in each app before choosing if a particular medium is central to your work; brush feel is a personal workflow judgment, not a simple feature count. How do layers and large canvases compare?

Both apps support layers and common controls such as opacity and blend modes, but availability depends on platform and edition. Sketchbook’s mobile Premium Bundle includes layer grouping, layer-masking blend modes, clipping masks, and additional adjustments. The company’s documentation cautions that layer features differ between platforms. Sketchbook feature notes · Sketchbook layer documentation.

Procreate supports layered native artwork, but it does not offer unlimited layers. The maximum depends on canvas dimensions and iPad hardware; use its layer-limit calculator before setting up a large print canvas. In either app, larger dimensions and higher resolution can reduce available layer capacity and increase memory demands. Procreate help center.

For print work, choose canvas dimensions and resolution deliberately rather than assuming the default is suitable. Sketchbook’s mobile controls for resizing and print-resolution settings are part of Premium; desktop Sketchbook offers canvas-unit controls. Sketchbook canvas guidance · Premium Bundle features.

What animation and 3D features are included?

Animation: Procreate is the more integrated iPad option

Procreate’s Animation Assist provides frame-based animation inside the main drawing app. The number of frames that can be rendered is constrained by the iPad’s maximum layer limit. For a richer timeline workflow, Procreate Dreams is a separate app with a timeline, multiple tracks, video support, and drawn animation. It should not be confused with Animation Assist or treated as simply a mode of Procreate. Procreate file and animation guidance · Procreate Dreams.

SketchBook Pro Desktop includes FlipBook tools, but animation features are not uniform across the Sketchbook platform versions. SketchBook Motion was a separate animation-oriented product. If animation is a deciding factor, verify the feature set for the exact version and device you intend to use; a desktop flipbook feature is not equivalent to a full timeline animation application. SketchBook animation documentation.

3D painting: a Procreate advantage

Procreate supports painting on 3D models and related 3D file workflows on compatible iPads; supported file types are described in its handbook. Sketchbook’s core positioning is sketching, painting, and illustration rather than 3D asset painting. Procreate FAQ · Procreate file types.

Which app fits file exchange and professional work?

Native files and exports

Sketchbook’s native format is Sketchbook TIFF, which retains layer data. It also exports common image formats and PSD, but its export documentation warns that some features may not survive PSD conversion. Procreate’s native .procreate files store artwork data and can include associated video data; the app also supports common image formats, PDF, video, and two 3D formats. Sketchbook export guidance · Procreate file formats.

Test PSD exchange before relying on it

PSD support does not promise that every application-specific effect will remain editable and identical. Before adopting either app for a shared production pipeline, exchange a representative test file containing multiple layers, blend modes, masks, text, clipping masks, adjustments, transparency, and the canvas dimensions you use. Check the result in both applications, then decide whether the workflow preserves what your collaborators need.

Back up work before changing apps

Procreate artwork is stored locally on the iPad, and its help center recommends regular export or backup. Sketchbook warns that uninstalling can remove locally saved work or settings: its guidance specifically cautions that iOS artwork can be lost when the app is removed, while Android uninstall/reinstall can remove brush customizations, palettes, preferences, Gallery organization, and unsaved progress. Before migrating or reinstalling, export important artwork, preserve native files where possible, back up custom brushes and palettes, and test one copy of an older file before moving an archive. Do not assume reinstalling restores local Gallery content. Procreate help center · Sketchbook download and reinstall guidance.

Which app should different artists choose?

  • Beginner without settled hardware: Start with Sketchbook if you want to experiment without buying an iPad. Its core app is available across desktop and mobile platforms; consider the mobile Premium Bundle only if you need its extra tools.
  • Beginner who already owns a compatible iPad: Procreate is a strong long-term illustration choice if you are comfortable learning its iPad workflow. Its official resources include a Beginners Series, handbook, and learning materials.
  • Windows or Mac artist: Choose Sketchbook when you need to draw on a desktop or use a pen display. Procreate’s main app does not cover that workflow.
  • Android artist: Sketchbook is the relevant option between these two; verify stylus behavior on your specific device.
  • Comic artist: Either can support drawing and painting, but if you need dedicated comic-page layouts, panels, or advanced lettering workflows, consider whether Clip Studio Paint is a better fit.
  • Concept artist or illustrator: Choose Sketchbook for cross-platform ideation or Procreate for an iPad-centered painting workflow. Large canvases and layered production files warrant a test on your hardware.
  • Print illustrator: Set physical canvas dimensions and resolution intentionally, and confirm available layers at that size before building a complex file.
  • Animator: Procreate is the clearer fit for integrated iPad frame animation; consider Dreams for richer timelines. Sketchbook’s FlipBook tools are limited to supported desktop versions.
  • Professional freelancer or studio: Pick based on client file requirements, device, and collaboration pipeline—not feature count alone. Neither app replaces every desktop publishing, vector, photo-editing, 3D, or studio-production tool.
  • Student, family, or classroom: Sketchbook’s broad platform support may simplify access across mixed devices. For managed or institutional licensing, check current terms; consumer access and enterprise or education licensing are different purchase paths.

When should you consider an alternative?

  • Adobe Fresco: Consider it if you want raster and vector brushes together and use Adobe tools; account and plan terms may be a drawback if avoiding subscriptions is a priority.
  • Clip Studio Paint: Consider it for comics, manga, inking, page layouts, or more advanced illustration and animation; its interface and pricing structure are more involved.
  • Krita: Consider it for free desktop painting, including on Windows, macOS, and Linux; it is less tablet-native than Procreate and is not the same kind of mobile experience.
  • Concepts: Consider it for infinite-canvas ideation, diagramming, and vector-like sketching rather than raster painting.
  • Affinity: Consider its tools when you need structured illustration, photo editing, or desktop publishing workflows rather than an immediate sketch-first app.
