Choose Goodnotes for polished handwriting, digital notebooks, and PDF study—especially on iPad. Choose Samsung Notes if you already use a Galaxy phone or tablet and want the deepest S Pen integration. Choose Standard Notes for private, text-first notes that work across desktop, mobile, and the web.
These are not three equivalent products. Goodnotes and Samsung Notes are primarily digital-paper and document workspaces; Standard Notes is a privacy-oriented writing and knowledge-management system.

Goodnotes centers on notebooks, handwriting, drawing, templates, reusable elements, and annotated documents. It is a natural fit for lecture notes, worksheets, sheet music, digital planners, and imported textbooks. Typed text, search, folders, and document navigation supplement the paper-like workflow.

Samsung Notes: a Galaxy capture hub
Samsung Notes combines S Pen writing with typed notes, images, drawings, recordings, folders, reminders, and PDF tools. Its advantage is not just the app; it is the connection between a compatible Galaxy device, S Pen behavior, Samsung Cloud, and selected Galaxy AI features.
Standard Notes: private writing and knowledge management
Standard Notes emphasizes encrypted notes, multiple text editors, tags, links, backups, offline access, and optional self-hosting. It is better understood as a secure writing system than as a digital notebook. It may hold notes about a PDF, but it should not be assumed to annotate that PDF like Goodnotes or Samsung Notes.

Where it is strongest
- Apple Pencil handwriting, page templates, lasso selection, and notebook organization.
- PDF study workflows with page thumbnails, rearrangement, markup, and document navigation.
- Digital planners and reusable stickers or elements.
- A mature iPad experience for users who think in pages and notebooks.
Goodnotes itself says its Android, Windows, and web products do not provide the full Goodnotes 6 feature range available on iPad (official platform comparison). Pen latency, palm rejection, pressure response, and search or conversion features therefore depend on the device and platform rather than the brand name alone.

Goodnotes uses Goodnotes Cloud to synchronize notebooks in its Android, Windows, and web workflow. iPad libraries require the relevant cloud-sync setup; an iPad purchase should not be assumed to make every notebook appear on another platform. The Android/Windows/web FAQ says there is currently no manual-backup function in that workflow, although notes can be exported as PDFs (Goodnotes FAQ). A PDF preserves appearance, not necessarily the original editable notebook structure, audio, or proprietary metadata.
Free tier and subscriptions
Goodnotes’ pricing page listed these US prices on August 18, 2026: Free at $0 with three notebooks and 100 MB storage; Essential at $11.99 per year; Pro at $35.99 per year; Teams at $120 per seat per year; Enterprise at custom pricing; and an AI Pass shown as an additional $9.99 per month (Goodnotes pricing). Plan contents, including sharing, storage, AI access, and cross-device sync, should be checked at purchase.

Goodnotes states that free or expired access can restrict notebooks, imports, sharing, and exports, and may apply watermarks (Android information; web information). That makes the free tier useful for trying the workflow, not an unrestricted archival strategy.
Who should avoid Goodnotes
- Someone buying an Android tablet solely for an iPad-equivalent Goodnotes experience.
- A user who requires independent, complete library backups rather than PDF export.
- A privacy-sensitive user who has not reviewed Goodnotes Cloud, privacy, and AI terms (privacy policy; terms; AI information).
Samsung Notes in detail
Galaxy and S Pen integration
On a compatible Galaxy tablet, Samsung Notes offers S Pen hover and handwriting behavior, handwriting-to-text conversion, straightening and cleanup tools, templates, folders, and quick capture. Voice recordings can be synchronized with written notes so you can follow the recording alongside the strokes (Samsung voice-note support). Capabilities vary by device, One UI version, region, and account.
PDF workflow
Samsung’s documented workflow is:
- Open Samsung Notes and touch and hold the create-note icon.
- Select Import PDF, or create a note and choose the PDF insert option.
- Select the file, then add handwriting, drawings, or text.
- Use conversion or straightening where the device supports it.
- Tap Back to save.
- For an export, open the note, choose More options → Save as file → PDF file, select a location, and tap Done.
Importing creates a copy and does not edit the original PDF. Orientation can matter, and existing PDF text is not edited like text in a word processor. Samsung documents additional export formats such as Word, PowerPoint, image, and text in its settings guidance (PDF and organization support; features and export settings).
Windows and OneNote limitations
Samsung says the PC version is optimized for Galaxy Book models and may not be compatible with other Windows computers (Samsung Notes on PC). A Microsoft OneNote feed can show selected Samsung Notes on a PC, but Samsung explicitly says those notes cannot be edited or removed through the feed; editing requires Samsung Notes (OneNote feed support). This is viewing access, not a full two-way replacement.
Galaxy AI qualifications
Note Assist and PDF translation features depend on supported devices, accounts, regions, connectivity, and current Samsung terms. Samsung says some AI-generated PDF overlays cannot be synchronized, shared, saved, or restored in the original translated state (PDF AI support; Note Assist).

Who should avoid Samsung Notes
- Users on non-Samsung Windows PCs who need a fully supported desktop editor.
- People who require a platform-neutral library with identical behavior everywhere.
- Teams that need collaborative editing outside Samsung’s ecosystem.
Standard Notes in detail
Text, structure, and privacy
Standard Notes provides text editors, tags, note links, dynamic organization, offline use, encrypted attachments, backups, and self-hosting guidance. Its help center covers encryption, security audits, data collection, account recovery, imports, and export-related workflows (features; help center). These are documented product priorities, not a substitute for an independent security audit or a threat-model review.

Encrypted notes are not automatically anonymous, and cloud services can still expose account or usage metadata.
Where it falls short for paper-style work
Standard Notes should not be selected for extensive stylus handwriting, page templates, visual planners, or textbook markup unless a current platform test proves otherwise. It is a strong place to store extracted research, meeting prose, checklists, and linked knowledge; it is not presented by its official materials as a Goodnotes-style canvas.
Self-hosting and migration
Self-hosting can improve control but adds server updates, backups, authentication, and availability responsibilities. The help center documents backups and imports from services including Evernote, Simplenote, Apple Notes, Google Keep, and text files (migration and backup guidance). Plain text is usually easier to move than rich editors, encrypted attachments, or app-specific metadata.

Organization and search
Goodnotes organizes pages into notebooks and folders; Samsung Notes adds folders, subfolders, templates, favorites, sorting, and reminders; Standard Notes is strongest when tags, links, text search, and structured writing are the center of the system. Large-library search speed and consistency should be tested with your own data.
Audio
Samsung Notes has documented recordings synchronized with written notes. Do not assume equivalent audio-linked handwriting behavior in Goodnotes or Standard Notes without verifying the current platform and plan.
Sync and offline use
Goodnotes cross-platform synchronization depends on Goodnotes Cloud and platform-specific plans or setup. Samsung Notes depends on Galaxy and Samsung account services, with OneNote providing limited viewing access. Standard Notes documents offline use and encrypted synchronization features; verify which editors and attachments remain available offline on your devices.

Goodnotes involves account, Goodnotes Cloud, and potentially AI terms. “Secure” is too broad a label: compare encryption scope, provider access, backups, metadata, AI processing, recovery, and self-hosting for your threat model.
Which app is best for students?
iPad student
Choose Goodnotes when lectures, worksheets, textbooks, or planners are primarily handwritten or PDF-based. Confirm the plan’s notebook, storage, sharing, and export limits before building a semester-long archive.

Galaxy Tab student
Choose Samsung Notes when S Pen latency, handwriting conversion, recordings, and Galaxy integration matter. It is usually the lowest-friction choice for an existing Galaxy owner.
Windows-heavy or privacy-sensitive student
Choose Standard Notes for typed research, citations, journals, and linked study notes across systems. Choose Goodnotes only after confirming that its Windows or web feature set covers your exact assignment workflow.

Samsung Notes is compelling for Galaxy users who want quick handwritten capture and audio-linked notes. Goodnotes suits visually structured meeting books and annotated documents, particularly on iPad. Standard Notes suits typed minutes, sensitive drafts, and long-term knowledge bases; check sharing requirements because privacy-oriented workflows may not match every collaboration model.
Which app is easiest to migrate away from?
Standard Notes has the clearest text-and-backup orientation. Samsung Notes offers multiple documented export formats, but proprietary structure and recordings need checking. Goodnotes’ PDF export is practical for readable archives, yet it may not preserve editable layers, audio, or notebook metadata. Export a representative sample—including handwriting, attachments, links, and a large PDF—before committing your entire library.
