They are not direct price rivals: Apple’s U.S. 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro started at $1,699 in March 2026, while the T490 is a withdrawn 2019-era model now found used or refurbished. The answer changes if “MacBook Pro” means an older Intel model rather than a current M-series Mac.

The performance conclusion for a current MacBook Pro is based on its newer architecture and published specifications, not a same-test benchmark comparison. The T490 remains capable for office work, browsing, coding and remote administration, but its age and U-series processors make it a poor choice for demanding modern video, 3D or sustained GPU work.
“MacBook Pro” can mean very different computers
This comparison uses the T490 against the current Apple-silicon lineup, including the 14-inch M5 model introduced in 2025 and 14- or 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max models introduced in 2026. Apple offers the 14-inch model with M5, M5 Pro or M5 Max; the 16-inch model is offered with M5 Pro or M5 Max. See Apple’s current MacBook Pro lineup.
A used Intel MacBook Pro is a separate case. It may be closer to the T490 in age and price, but its battery, keyboard, ports and macOS support depend on the exact model. Before comparing one, identify the year, screen size, processor, memory, battery condition and latest compatible macOS version. Apple’s model-identification and compatibility page helps establish which machine is being considered.

The T490’s platform specifications come from Lenovo’s T490 specification sheet. Apple’s current specifications are listed at Apple’s MacBook Pro technical specifications and, for 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max details, Apple’s 16-inch specifications page. A 16GB T490 and a 16GB Mac do not have identical memory arrangements: the former uses DDR4 system memory, while the latter uses unified memory shared across components.
The Apple prices above are U.S. starting prices reported in March 2026, not guaranteed current or sale prices. Configuration, education pricing, promotions and later product changes can alter what a buyer pays. Apple’s announcement lists the launch pricing at its March 2026 newsroom page. The T490 has no reliable current standard price because it is withdrawn and available inventory varies.
Performance: choose for the work, not the badge
Where a current MacBook Pro is stronger
Apple’s current M-series machines are a much better fit for demanding CPU and GPU work, video encoding, creative applications and machine-learning workloads. Apple lists media engines for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW and AV1 decoding in its technical specifications. M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations target heavier workloads than the base M5; the Max tier is most appropriate when its additional graphics, media or memory capability will actually be used.
What the T490 still handles well
For documents, web apps, meetings, programming, remote desktop and general administration, a sound T490 can remain useful. The optional MX250 is an improvement over Intel UHD Graphics, not a modern workstation GPU. Neither that option nor the model name should be read as evidence that a used unit is suitable for contemporary 3D production or heavy local AI work.
No precise performance multiplier is appropriate here: results depend on the specific T490 processor and Mac chip, and there is no same-test benchmark set in this comparison. If your workload is a particular application, check its supported operating systems and hardware requirements before choosing by general performance class.

Display: check the T490 panel before buying
There is no single T490 screen. Lenovo offered a 14-inch 1366×768 TN panel rated at 220 nits and 45% NTSC; FHD IPS options include a 250-nit, 45% NTSC panel and a low-power 400-nit, 72% NTSC version. Higher-end options include a 400-nit PrivacyGuard FHD panel and a 500-nit WQHD IPS panel with 100% Adobe RGB and Dolby Vision/HDR. Touch options were also available. The full panel range is in Lenovo’s T490 specifications.
Unless the laptop is exceptionally cheap and intended for basic terminal use, avoid the 1366×768 TN configuration. Ask the seller for the resolution and panel type, or verify them in person; the model name does not reveal the screen quality.
The current MacBook Pro display is a more consistent premium option: Liquid Retina XDR, wide P3 color, one billion colors, True Tone and ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple specifies up to 1,000 nits sustained full-screen brightness and 1,600 nits peak brightness for HDR content. That makes the Mac the better choice for HDR, color-sensitive work and an overall high-end viewing experience.

Lenovo’s original T490 specification lists up to approximately 16.11 hours under its stated benchmark conditions for the integrated 50Wh battery, with actual life varying by configuration, software, wireless use, power settings and brightness. That is not an estimate for a used T490 in 2026: its battery may have lost capacity or been replaced. Apple lists up to 24 hours of video streaming for some current 14-inch M5 configurations; the 16-inch M5 Pro is listed for up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 17 hours of wireless web use, with different figures for M5 Max. These are manufacturer-published figures for specified models and test types, not directly comparable real-world results. See Apple’s battery specifications.
For any used laptop, request battery health or full-charge capacity, cycle count and replacement history. Confirm that the charger is included and that the USB-C charging port works; an original maximum-runtime claim cannot establish a used machine’s present endurance.

Ports, docking and carrying the laptop
The T490’s business-oriented connections include two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports (one with Thunderbolt 3), HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, microSD, a 3.5mm audio jack and a side docking connector. Some configurations add a nano-SIM option for WWAN or a smart-card reader. This is useful for wired networks, older accessories, classrooms and offices that use physical docks. Verify the exact unit because optional features are not present on every machine.
Current MacBook Pro models include Thunderbolt connections, HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe 3 charging and a headphone jack, but the details vary by chip and screen size; check the exact configuration in Apple’s port specifications. The Mac favors modern high-bandwidth workflows, while the T490 has the edge for built-in Ethernet and USB-A. Older Intel MacBook Pros have their own port layouts, so do not assume current ports apply.
The T490 measures about 329 × 227 × 17.9mm and weighs roughly 1.46–1.61kg depending on configuration. Current 14-inch MacBook Pros are the more relevant portability comparison; a 16-inch M5 Pro is about 2.14kg before accessories. Compare the whole carry kit—charger, adapters and dock—as well as screen size. Apple’s model-specific dimensions and weights are in its 16-inch specifications and MacBook Pro specs.
Keyboard, pointing devices, camera and sound
The T490 has a six-row, spill-resistant ThinkPad keyboard and TrackPoint. Its physical layout and pointing nub suit people who prefer that style of navigation and typing. Keyboard feel is personal, so test one if possible rather than treating a reputation as a guarantee.
A MacBook Pro offers a large precision trackpad, macOS gestures, Touch ID and an aluminum chassis. Its speakers and camera are also a stronger fit for buyers who value a polished video-call and media experience. Neither machine is the universal ergonomic winner: decide whether you prefer the ThinkPad keyboard and TrackPoint or the Mac’s trackpad-led workflow.

Windows, Linux and macOS compatibility
Choose the T490 for Windows and Linux needs
The T490 is the simpler option for Windows-only enterprise software, PC games, hardware utilities, many x86 virtual machines and Linux experimentation. Lenovo lists Windows 10, Windows 10 Pro, Linux and Ubuntu among supported operating-system options for the platform. That does not guarantee every current distribution, driver or corporate configuration; check the software and support requirements that matter to you. A refurbished listing also does not by itself prove that a valid Windows license is included.
Choose a MacBook Pro for Apple-specific work
MacBook Pro is the natural fit for macOS-only applications, Xcode and Apple-platform development, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and workflows tied to iPhone, iPad or other Apple services. Apple’s compatibility page identifies macOS Tahoe 26 as the newest compatible operating system for current 2025–2026 models: check the exact Mac model and OS compatibility.
Apple silicon is not the same Windows path as an Intel Mac. A current M-series MacBook Pro does not offer Boot Camp in the same way Intel Macs did. If you need Windows, first confirm that the particular application, drivers or peripherals work with a supported virtual machine, Windows on Arm or remote desktop. For specialized VPN, smart-card, kernel-level security or engineering tools, verify the vendor and your organization’s support matrix before switching.

The T490 is partially upgradeable, not fully modular. It has soldered memory plus one DDR4 SO-DIMM slot, and the maximum supported total depends on the soldered configuration and installed module. Storage is more serviceable than on many thin premium laptops, though exact drive format and fit depend on the machine’s configuration. Check the specification sheet and inspect the actual unit before ordering parts.
Current MacBook Pro memory and storage are decisions to make when buying; they are not conventional user upgrades. Apple describes its newer models as designed for durability and repairability in its 2026 announcement, but that does not make them equivalent to a business laptop with a memory slot. A T490 may be cheaper to maintain when parts and labor are available; an old unit can still have costly or disruptive wear in its battery, hinges, keyboard, fan, display cable, SSD or USB-C charging circuitry.

For either machine, total ownership cost includes the purchase price, battery or repair needs, accessories, warranty and the time required to keep the device usable. A newer used business laptop such as a T14 or an AMD-based ThinkPad may be worth checking if the T490’s age is a concern; a MacBook Air or earlier Apple-silicon MacBook Pro may be more appropriate if you want macOS but do not need a current Pro-tier workload. Verify current availability and prices before comparing alternatives.
How to choose a T490 configuration
Configurations worth considering
- 8th-generation or newer Core i5/i7, selected for the workload and price.
- At least 16GB of total memory for comfortable multitasking; confirm whether the SO-DIMM slot remains available if expansion matters.
- A 512GB SSD, or a smaller drive only if replacement cost is acceptable.
- The 400-nit low-power FHD or WQHD panel rather than the base HD TN screen.
- A battery with documented health and a compatible USB-C charger included.
- Backlit keyboard, 1080p camera, WWAN, smart-card reader or other extras only if the specific unit actually includes them.
Walk away or price in the risk
- 8GB-only memory if your workload is likely to grow.
- Unknown or badly degraded battery, missing charger, damaged USB-C ports or untested Thunderbolt.
- BIOS supervisor password, organization management enrollment, or a seller unable to confirm ownership and reset status.
- Cracked bezels, loose hinges, missing bottom screws or no meaningful return policy.
- A listing that says only “T490” without identifying processor, memory, storage, display and battery details.
Used-laptop inspection checklist
- Identify the model and processor. In Windows, open System Information from the Start menu and check System Model and Processor; you can also check the BIOS information screen.
- Check memory and storage. In Windows, open Task Manager > Performance to confirm memory, then Settings > System > Storage for capacity. Review SSD health with a trusted drive-health utility if available.
- Verify the screen. Confirm resolution in Settings > System > Display, then inspect the panel for brightness, color uniformity, dead pixels and damage. Ask the seller to identify the panel type if it is not documented.
- Generate a battery report on Windows. Open Command Prompt and run
powercfg /batteryreport. Windows reports the saved file path in the command output; open that HTML file and compare Full Charge Capacity with Design Capacity, while recognizing that reported values are estimates. - Test every connection and input. Try both USB-A ports, both USB-C ports and charging, HDMI, Ethernet, audio, keyboard backlight, TrackPoint, touchpad, fingerprint reader if present, webcam, speakers and microphone.
- Check firmware and ownership status. Confirm there is no BIOS administrator password or corporate enrollment lock, and ask the seller to remove the device from any management account before payment.
- Confirm license, accessories and return terms. Verify the Windows license or plan a Linux installation, confirm the charger is included, and get the return policy in writing.
When an older Intel MacBook Pro makes sense
Consider an Intel MacBook Pro only for a compelling specific reason, such as an Intel-dependent workflow or a low enough price to justify its age. Establish the exact model and macOS ceiling, test the battery and keyboard, inspect the ports and display, and ask about repair history. Intel models vary too much for a blanket recommendation, and they generally offer a shorter software-support horizon and poorer performance per watt than Apple-silicon models. Do not buy one simply because the case says “MacBook Pro.”
Verdict by buyer
Students, office workers and budget buyers
A well-checked T490 can be the sensible choice for documents, web work, classes and routine productivity when Windows compatibility and low cost matter. Prioritize the screen, battery and return terms over a small processor upgrade.
Developers and Linux users
Pick the T490 for Linux, Windows tooling or x86-specific environments; pick a current MacBook Pro for Xcode, Apple-platform work or macOS-native development. Confirm virtualization and toolchain compatibility before deciding.

Creators, travelers and Apple ecosystem users
A current MacBook Pro is the stronger match for demanding creative work, a high-quality display, speakers, long battery life when new and Apple ecosystem integration. Its premium cost is harder to justify if your work is mainly browser and office apps.
Corporate IT buyers
Match the machine to your management, endpoint security, VPN, smart-card, identity-provider and repair requirements. The T490 offers business-oriented features on some configurations, including TPM 2.0, optional fingerprint and IR readers, ThinkShutter, smart-card reader, vPro and a Kensington lock slot; options differ by unit. Mac deployment and security tooling follow a different management model, so check compatibility with your organization before standardizing on either.
