Choose Apple Notes if you mainly use an iPhone, iPad, and Mac and want quick capture without another notes-app subscription. Choose Evernote if you need Windows, Android, or browser access, a dedicated web clipper, or a more structured archive with tags, tasks, and advanced search. The deciding factor is less about which app has more features and more about where you work and how you retrieve what you save.
Apple Notes vs Evernote at a glance

|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Personal notes and capture across Apple devices | Cross-platform research and information management |
| Platforms | Designed for Apple devices and Apple Account access; check whether available browser access meets your needs | Evernote lists apps for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and web |

| Offline access | Depends on whether a note is in iCloud or stored locally and on device settings | Desktop and mobile behavior differ; mobile offline access can require setup |
| Migration | Can import ENEX files, but some Evernote content may not transfer | Exports ENEX and HTML through its Mac or Windows desktop app |
Evernote’s current plan details and platform list are on its plan comparison page. Apple describes supported Notes import formats and limitations in its Notes import guide.
How the two apps are built differently
Apple Notes is part of the Apple workflow
Notes is most useful when it sits alongside the devices and services you already use: capture something from an Apple share sheet, scan a paper document on an iPhone or iPad, write with Apple Pencil, or keep a checklist with personal notes. Its simpler folder structure is an advantage if you want to open a note and get on with the task rather than maintain a knowledge-management system.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Notes can use iCloud or, where supported, local storage. That distinction matters: a note stored locally is not the same as one synced through iCloud, and access across devices depends on where the note lives and which Apple Account is signed in.
#1 Best Overall
- Creative Paper Tool: Huion Note is an app-based paper product that consists of a digital pen, regular A5 notepad, and software application. It gives you digital copies of your handwritten work while still allowing the tactile aesthetic of pen to real paper.
- From Page To Screen: Everything you write is simultaneously captured with vector lines and seamlessly transferred to your device via the free Huion Note app (available for mobile devices on iOS and Android).
- Never Miss A Word: Record audio to sync with your notes, and click play to relive your handwriting process and ensure nothing gets lost.
- Share Your Ideas: Easily access your notes, inspiration, drawings, and doodles from the mobile device and one-click share as images, PDF, or MP4 files with your classmates, teammates & and colleagues.
- Organize Your Notes: Keep all your notes in one place and you can merge, split, or move the pages into different groups as you want in the Huion Note app. It also provides various editing tools such as highlighter to help you re-edit your notes and highlight key ideas.
Evernote is an account-based information hub
Evernote is designed to keep notes and reference material available across operating systems. Its structure includes notebooks, spaces, and tags; it also brings together attachments, tasks, calendar connections, and web clipping. That breadth is useful when you need several routes back to a saved item, but it introduces more setup than many casual note-takers need.
Organization and search: simple hierarchy or multiple ways to retrieve
When Apple Notes is enough
Use Apple Notes if folders, subfolders, pinned notes, and search match the way you think. For a household list, meeting notes, receipts, ideas, or a modest personal archive, adding a separate tag and notebook scheme to every item can create work without improving retrieval.
When Evernote’s structure helps
Evernote is a better candidate when an item needs to be found by more than its folder: for example, a client, project, topic, document type, and date. Evernote lists advanced Boolean, geographic, and filtered search among its plan features. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every search will find every scan or attachment; test the kinds of material you actually store.
Recommended Free Tools
Plan limits shape this choice. Evernote’s current comparison lists Free at 50 notes, one notebook, five spaces, 20 tags, sync on one device, and 1 GB storage. Starter lists 1,000 notes, 20 notebooks, 10 spaces, 100 tags, sync on three devices, and 5 GB storage. Advanced lists unlimited notes, notebooks, spaces, tags, and device synchronization, subject to safeguards. Check the current plan page before choosing, since features and terms can change.

Web clipping and research
Evernote for an organized research archive
Evernote’s Web Clipper is purpose-built to save web pages, articles, PDFs, or screen captures, including full pages or selected portions. It can keep clipped material with a title, tags, annotations, and a notebook, which makes it useful for research you expect to revisit rather than merely bookmark.
Apple Notes for occasional saves
Apple Notes can still hold a Safari link, copied passage, screenshot, PDF, or image through sharing and copy-and-paste workflows. That is often sufficient if you save web material occasionally. If your routine is to collect and later search a large body of articles and source material, the dedicated clipper is a meaningful Evernote advantage.
Scanning, handwriting, attachments, and retrieval
Judge these apps by the whole life of a document, not by whether a feature exists. Ask whether you can capture the item, search its contents, annotate it, find it later, and export it with its attachments intact.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Scanning: Apple Notes supports scanning from Apple devices. Evernote advertises camera scanning for documents, business cards, whiteboards, and handwritten notes.
- Handwriting: Apple Notes is a natural option for iPad users who already take notes with Apple Pencil. No controlled, current comparison of handwriting recognition or search accuracy between the two apps is available.
- Search inside files: Evernote’s App Store listing describes search across text in images and handwriting. Actual results can depend on the file type, scan quality, platform, and account features; try representative documents before trusting either app as your only archive.
- Attachments and export: Test PDFs, tables, checklists, audio, scans, internal links, and dates before moving a collection. Apple warns that unsupported Evernote features or attachments will not be imported.
Evernote’s U.S. App Store listing describes its scanning and search features at Evernote on the App Store. Feature descriptions should not be read as a guarantee of identical behavior on every device or plan.

Tasks, calendars, and lightweight project work
Use Apple Notes with the tools you already rely on
If a checklist is enough, or you already manage deadlines in Apple Reminders and Calendar, Notes can hold the supporting material without becoming another task system. Keeping notes and tasks in separate apps can be a benefit when each has a clear job.
Use Evernote when tasks belong beside reference material
Evernote lists tasks with dates, reminders, and assignment, along with Evernote Calendar and connections to Google or Microsoft calendars. This can suit meeting notes and lightweight project tracking where the task, source document, and related notes should stay together. It is not a substitute for dedicated project software if you need dependencies, resource planning, approvals, or advanced reporting. Feature access varies by plan; consult Evernote’s plan comparison.
AI features: useful only if they fit your work and account
Evernote’s plan page lists AI Assistant, Semantic Search, AI Transcribe, AI Edit, and AI Cleanup, with availability caveats for some capabilities. Do not assume every feature is included in every plan, available on every device, or supported in every language. Confirm the current terms and test whether the output can be edited and exported in the form you need.
For confidential client, legal, medical, or financial material, review the current data-handling terms and your organization’s rules before using transcription, semantic search, or AI editing. The feature list alone does not establish what is appropriate for sensitive information.

Offline access and synchronization
“Offline” does not mean the same thing in every app or on every device. Evernote says desktop apps keep synced notebooks and notes in a local database; on mobile, you may need to configure offline notes or notebooks. Its help pages explain offline access and mobile offline setup.
Apple Notes access depends on whether notes are synced in iCloud or stored locally, as well as device and account settings. Before a trip or field assignment, open the specific notes and attachments you will need while offline and verify they are available on the device you will carry. A desktop test does not confirm mobile availability.

Personal and family sharing
Apple Notes is convenient for shared notes and lists among Apple users. Evernote can share notes and notebooks across its supported platforms, which is more suitable when collaborators use a mix of devices. Compare the permissions and workflow for the exact kind of collaboration you need rather than equating consumer sharing with team administration.

Evernote lists two-factor authentication and in-note encryption for Mac and Windows; its Enterprise plan lists controls such as SSO, centralized administration, user management, activity history, and business-data ownership. Those features do not by themselves establish compliance with a particular regulated-industry requirement. Teams should review current security, privacy, retention, ownership, and AI data-handling terms before adopting either product for sensitive records.

The information available here does not support a blanket claim that one service is more private. Compare who controls the account and data, which encryption applies to the notes you use, how shared notes are handled, and whether you can export a usable archive.
Cost and free-plan value
Apple Notes has no separate Notes subscription. However, its notes and attachments may use iCloud storage, and a large library can contribute to storage needs beyond the included allowance. See Apple’s iCloud page for storage information relevant to your country.
Evernote’s Free tier has material limits: 50 notes, one notebook, one-device sync, and 1 GB storage, among other caps listed on its plan page. If you need more capacity or multiple-device synchronization, compare the paid plan’s current price in your region and purchase channel against any iCloud storage you already pay for. Evernote’s plan page did not expose static prices in August 2026, so a single price would not be reliable across web, app-store billing, regions, or promotions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Value depends on what you will use: cross-platform sync, web clipping, advanced search, tasks, calendar connections, and AI may justify a subscription for a working archive. If you mostly write short personal notes on Apple devices, those extras may not offset the added cost or complexity.
Which app is better for your use case?
| Your situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You use iPhone, iPad, and Mac and want fast personal capture | Apple Notes | Low-friction integration and no separate Notes subscription |

| You frequently save and revisit web research | Evernote | Its dedicated Web Clipper organizes captured pages and PDFs |
| You handwrite on iPad or scan occasional papers | Apple Notes | It fits Apple Pencil and Apple-device capture workflows |
| You need tasks, reminders, and research in one place | Evernote | It combines note organization with task and calendar features |
| You have a large legacy Evernote archive | Keep Evernote while testing migration | ENEX import exists, but content fidelity is not guaranteed |
| You need a local-first knowledge graph or open Markdown files | Evaluate Obsidian or Joplin | Those products better match file portability and connected-note workflows |
| You need databases and team workspace structures | Evaluate Notion | Its core job is structured workspace and database organization |
How to move from Evernote to Apple Notes safely
Apple Notes can import Evernote ENEX files. Apple’s guide says each Evernote note becomes a new Apple Note and offers an option to preserve folders during import; unsupported features or attachments are not imported. The importer also supports text and rich-text formats, HTML, and, on macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, and iPadOS 26 or later, Markdown files. Read Apple’s current import instructions for supported formats and platform steps.
- Make a complete backup first. Keep the original exports untouched so you can return to them if notes or attachments are missing.
- Export from Evernote desktop. Evernote says note export is available through its Mac or Windows desktop app, not Evernote Web. It supports ENEX and HTML; the documented export limit is up to 100 notes at a time or an entire notebook. See Evernote’s export instructions.
- Start with one small notebook. Import a representative sample into Apple Notes rather than converting the whole archive immediately.
- Inspect the content that matters. Check attachments, tables, checklists, tags, dates, internal links, audio, scans, and handwritten material against the source.
- Compare counts and structure. Confirm the number of notes and whether folder organization is useful and intact before scaling up.
- Import the remaining archive in manageable batches. Retain the ENEX and HTML exports after migration as a fallback.
Because export is not available in Evernote Web, a user relying only on the browser app may need the desktop app to create the files.
Alternatives if neither app fits
- OneNote: Consider it if Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, or OneDrive is already central to your work: Microsoft OneNote.
- Obsidian: A better fit for local Markdown files, backlinks, and a connected knowledge graph, though sync and collaboration may require more setup: Obsidian.
- Joplin: Consider it for an open-source, Markdown-oriented approach: Joplin.
- Bear: A more writing-focused option for Apple users who want Markdown-style organization: Bear.
- Notion: Better suited to databases, team workspaces, and structured project information than simple notes: Notion.
- Craft: Worth considering for polished documents and collaborative writing in an Apple-friendly environment: Craft.
Final recommendation
Start with Apple Notes if your devices are all Apple and your needs are capture, handwriting, scans, folders, and personal sharing. Choose Evernote if your notes are a cross-platform working archive and its clipping, retrieval, or task features solve problems you actually have. If you are considering a switch, test a representative export and import before moving your only copy of a large archive.
