It is used by several workstation and server platforms whose processors, chipsets, memory rules, carriers, firmware and cooling hardware differ. Start with the exact CPU family and SKU, then confirm the motherboard’s CPU support list, minimum BIOS, chipset, memory QVL, PCIe wiring, carrier and cooler requirements.
Intel maps fourth- and fifth-generation Xeon Scalable processors to LGA4677 and also documents their package as Socket E1 (LGA4677-1). Xeon W-3400, W-2400 and related Xeon W families use the same broad socket class, but they are not automatically interchangeable with Xeon Scalable systems.
What is Intel LGA4677?
LGA4677 is a land-grid-array socket platform for high-end Intel Xeon processors. The socket label identifies the physical contact interface, not a complete platform specification. Intel’s socket reference lists fourth- and fifth-generation Xeon Scalable processors under LGA4677, while Intel package documentation calls that implementation Socket E1 (LGA4677-1) and requires a processor carrier.
Motherboard vendors may call the same general interface LGA 4677 or Socket E. Those names are useful for locating products, but they do not prove that a particular CPU will boot in a particular board.

Which CPUs fit LGA4677?
Xeon Scalable
Fourth- and fifth-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors are associated with LGA4677/Socket E1. Server boards such as GIGABYTE’s MS03-6L0 are examples of single-socket C741 designs supporting these generations and Xeon CPU Max processors. That is an example implementation, not a rule that every LGA4677 board accepts every Xeon Scalable SKU.
Xeon W workstation families
Intel’s LGA4677 workstation platforms include Xeon W-3400, W-2400, W-3500 and W-2500 families. The socket overlap with Xeon Scalable does not make their platforms interchangeable. Intel’s W790 guidance is specifically for Xeon W-3500, W-2500, W-3400 and W-2400 processors and explicitly states that Xeon Scalable processors are not compatible with W790.
What to verify before buying
- The exact processor model and generation.
- The motherboard model, PCB revision and published CPU support list.
- The required BIOS version and any firmware update procedure.
- The supported chipset and platform family.
- Required processor carrier and mounting hardware.
- Memory type, capacity limits and the board’s qualified-vendor list.
- Power delivery, thermal limits and chassis cooling.
Is LGA4677 the same as Socket E?
In product listings, “Socket E” commonly refers to the LGA4677 platform family. Intel’s package documentation uses the more specific designation Socket E1 (LGA4677-1) for fourth- and fifth-generation Xeon Scalable processors. Because vendors can use the shorter Socket E name across related products, rely on the processor and board documentation rather than the label alone.
Motherboards and chipsets: W790 versus C741
Intel W790 workstation boards
W790 is an Intel workstation chipset family for Xeon W-3500, W-2500, W-3400 and W-2400 processors. Intel identifies Xeon Scalable as incompatible with W790. W790 provides up to 28 chipset PCIe lanes and eight DMI 4.0 lanes; its chipset-side PCIe support includes generations 3.0 and 4.0. These are chipset I/O resources, separate from the processor’s own PCIe lanes.

Why the chipset name is not enough
Two boards using the same chipset can expose different numbers of slots, storage ports, DIMM sockets and networking devices. They can also split or disable PCIe links differently. Compare the block diagram, CPU support page, BIOS notes and memory population guide for the exact board revision.
How many RAM channels does LGA4677 support?
There is no single channel count for all LGA4677 processors. Intel’s 2025 memory guidance specifies eight DDR5 memory channels for Xeon W-3400 and four channels for Xeon W-2400.
| Processor family | Memory channels | Supported memory | Intel-stated maximum capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon W-3400 | Eight | DDR5 ECC RDIMM and 3DS RDIMM | Up to 4 TB, depending on processor and supported configuration |
| Xeon W-2400 | Four | DDR5 ECC RDIMM and 3DS RDIMM | Up to 2 TB, depending on processor and supported configuration |
These workstation families do not support ordinary UDIMMs for the documented configurations. Intel’s maximum memory speeds are based on one DIMM per channel; adding more DIMMs can lower the achievable speed. The motherboard’s QVL and population diagram determine which modules and slot combinations are valid.
DIMM slots are a board feature
A cited GIGABYTE C741 board has eight DIMM slots and eight-channel DDR5 RDIMM support for its processor. Other manufacturers, including Advantech, document different layouts. Slot count, rank support, maximum capacity and speed are therefore motherboard-level facts, not guaranteed by the LGA4677 label.
PCIe lanes: CPU resources versus chipset resources
Processor PCIe capability also varies by family. Intel’s Xeon W platform brief lists up to 112 CPU PCIe 5.0 lanes for Xeon W-3400 and up to 64 for Xeon W-2400. Those are maximum family figures, not a promise that every SKU or motherboard exposes all of them.

| Resource | Published figure | What determines the result in a build |
|---|---|---|
| Xeon W-3400 CPU PCIe | Up to 112 PCIe 5.0 lanes | Exact SKU, board routing and lane sharing |
| Xeon W-2400 CPU PCIe | Up to 64 PCIe 5.0 lanes | Exact SKU, board routing and lane sharing |
| W790 chipset PCIe | Up to 28 lanes | Chipset design and motherboard implementation |
| W790 DMI | Eight DMI 4.0 lanes | Chipset-to-CPU link and board design |
A board may allocate CPU lanes to graphics slots, storage, networking or onboard controllers, divide a link when multiple slots are populated, or share resources with M.2 and other devices. Read the manual’s block diagram instead of counting physical slots.
Processor carriers and CPU installation
LGA4677 Xeon packages use a carrier that aligns the processor with the socket and works with the retention and thermal hardware. Intel documents carrier variants E1A, E1B and E1C for different package types. Intel’s family guidance maps Xeon W-3400 to the E1A carrier and Xeon W-2400 to E1B.

Intel’s support article “Do Intel Xeon W-3400 and Xeon W-2400 Processors Need to Be Installed with a Processor Carrier?” (reviewed December 3, 2024) states: Intel® Xeon W-3400 processors need to be installed with E1A carriers.
Use the carrier specified by the CPU and system manual. Carriers are keyed and marked; do not substitute one merely because the processor appears to fit the socket. Follow the board or chassis manufacturer’s loading sequence, torque guidance and installation tools.
BIOS support and firmware checks
The exact motherboard CPU support list and BIOS notes govern whether an LGA4677 processor will start. A board can have the correct socket and still require a newer BIOS, a particular PCB revision or a vendor-specific update process.

- Identify the complete board model and PCB revision.
- Open the manufacturer’s CPU support list and locate the exact processor SKU.
- Record the minimum BIOS or firmware version shown for that SKU.
- Check whether the board can update BIOS without a supported CPU installed.
- Confirm compatible carrier, memory modules and power requirements before assembly.
- After installation, verify the detected CPU, memory channels, capacity and PCIe devices in firmware.
Do not infer a universal BIOS version from another LGA4677 board. Vendor support pages can change, and server systems may bundle BIOS, BMC and platform firmware requirements.
What cooler fits an LGA4677 Xeon?
Socket compatibility alone is not enough to choose a cooler. Match all of the following:
- The processor’s thermal design and sustained power limits.
- The correct carrier and socket pressure hardware.
- Cooler mounting dimensions and required backplate or standoffs.
- Motherboard heatsink and memory clearance.
- Server chassis height, air-shroud design and fan direction.
- Rack airflow, fan control and the system’s allowable inlet temperature.
Supermicro 1U manuals illustrate why there is no universal recommendation: one compact system uses a passive CPU heatsink with chassis airflow, while another 1U configuration specifies a CPU heatsink together with chassis fans. Some board manufacturers also treat the CPU cooler as a separately purchased component. A tower cooler that fits an open workstation case may be physically or thermally unsuitable in a 1U server.
Cooling selection procedure
- Read the CPU and chassis manuals for the approved heatsink or thermal kit.
- Confirm that the kit supports the processor’s carrier variant.
- Measure cooler height and check DIMM, VRM and expansion-card clearance.
- Verify fan orientation and whether an air shroud is required.
- Use the specified thermal interface material and mounting pressure.
- Validate temperatures and fan behavior under the intended sustained workload.
What does “BMI” mean for LGA4677?
No authoritative LGA4677 document in the available Intel and board references defines “BMI” as a specific socket feature, memory interface, benchmark or management function. The term should therefore remain unexpanded until the author or product documentation identifies what it means. Treating it as a guessed memory technology could lead to an incorrect compatibility claim.
A practical LGA4677 compatibility checklist
- CPU family: Xeon Scalable, Xeon W-3400/W-2400 or another explicitly supported family.
- Socket/package: LGA4677 or the documented Socket E1 package designation.
- Carrier: Correct E1A, E1B or other specified variant.
- Motherboard: Exact model, revision and CPU support entry.
- Chipset: W790 for supported Xeon W workstation platforms; C741 and other server implementations only where the board specifies them.
- BIOS: Minimum version and update method verified before installation.
- Memory: ECC RDIMM or 3DS RDIMM type, capacity, rank and population order confirmed against the QVL.
- PCIe: CPU lane budget, slot generation, bifurcation and sharing checked in the board manual.
- Power: VRM, EPS connectors and chassis power supply rated for the chosen CPU.
- Cooling: Approved heatsink, mounting hardware, clearance and airflow validated for the chassis.
- Support lifecycle: OEM BIOS, BMC and replacement-part support available for the intended deployment.
Bottom line
LGA4677 tells you which physical socket family to investigate, not which complete system to buy. Xeon W-3400 and W-2400 differ in memory channels and PCIe capacity; W790 does not accept Xeon Scalable; server C741 boards follow their own support lists; carriers and BIOS versions are CPU- and board-specific; and cooling depends on the entire chassis design. Select the processor first, then validate every platform detail against the exact motherboard and system documentation.
