VLC for Mac’s menus and preferences let you control playback speed, audio output, sound and picture effects, recording, synchronization, subtitles, and screenshots. The steps below follow VideoLAN’s documented VLC Desktop 3.0 interface; its Mac overview depicts VLC 3.0.8. Menu names and shortcuts can differ in other releases, so check the labels and key bindings in your installed copy if they do not match.
Find the controls in VLC for Mac
VideoLAN’s Mac overview shows the VLC 3.0.8 interface and describes the main menu layout. VideoLAN’s Mac overview is a platform-specific orientation; the detailed control instructions below come from its desktop-wide VLC 3.0 documentation, which covers macOS as well as Windows and Linux.
- File: Open media or a stream and save playlists.
- Playback: Select chapters, change speed, and jump to a chapter or time.
- Audio: Select an audio track or output device, change channel configuration, toggle visualizations, and adjust volume or mute.
How do I show Advanced Controls in VLC for Mac?
In the documented VLC Desktop 3.0 interface, choose View > Advanced Controls. An extra toolbar appears above the playback controls, including a Record button. The recording instructions are desktop-wide; VideoLAN does not separately verify those menu labels for the Mac application in the referenced guide.
Record what is playing
- Open the media you want to record.
- Choose View > Advanced Controls.
- Click Record to start. Click it again to finish, or stop playback.
By default, VLC saves recordings to the music or video folder. To choose another location in the documented interface, open Preferences > Input/Codecs > Files, use Browse to choose a recording directory, then select Save. See VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 recording guide.

Choose preferences without losing track of changes
VLC offers a simple preferences view for common settings and an advanced view with more detailed options. The documented sections include Interface, Audio, Video, Subtitles/OSD, Input/Codecs, and Hotkeys. Before changing an unfamiliar advanced option, note its original value so you can restore it if playback behaves differently.
If a setting causes trouble, VideoLAN documents Tools > Preferences > Reset Preferences as a way to return preferences to their defaults. See VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 preferences guide.

Adjust sound and picture during playback
Shape the sound with effects
VLC’s documented audio effects include a 10-band graphical equalizer, compressor, spatializer, stereo widener, and pitch adjustment. The equalizer changes the relative levels of frequency bands. After adjusting its bands, enable the equalizer; changing sliders alone does not activate it.
Apply video filters
Video filters can change the playback image with effects such as brightness adjustment, distortion, or motion blur. Make small changes so they are easy to undo. These controls adjust playback; they are not described as permanently editing the source file. VideoLAN lists these options in its VLC Desktop 3.0 Adjustment and Effects documentation.

How do I fix audio out of sync in VLC?
Audio/video synchronization shifts the sound relative to the picture. Subtitle synchronization instead shifts subtitle timing; use that when the captions, rather than the sound, are early or late.
VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 guide documents K and J for adjusting audio timing and a numerical synchronization control in the interface. In the numerical field, a positive value advances timing and a negative value delays it. The guide also describes Shift+H and Shift+J for bookmarking audio and subtitle positions, then Shift+K to synchronize the bookmarked positions. These are desktop-documented shortcuts, not a guarantee that every Mac release uses the same bindings; verify them under your installed copy’s Hotkeys preferences.

How do I sync subtitles in VLC?
Subtitle timing controls move captions relative to the picture without changing audio timing. In VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 documentation, H and G adjust subtitle timing, and numerical synchronization is also available. A positive numerical value advances the timing; a negative value delays it. Confirm the shortcut bindings in your Mac version before relying on them.

Change subtitle appearance
Preferences include font and size settings for text-rendered subtitles. Restart the stream for those changes to take effect. DVD/SVCD subtitles and VobSub image subtitles do not offer the same font customization as rendered text. When loading VobSub subtitles, select the .idx file rather than the .sub file. See VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 subtitle guide.
Change playback speed, jump, and use common shortcuts
Playback speed changes how quickly media runs; a jump or seek moves to a different position in the file. In the documented Mac menu layout, Playback provides speed and chapter/time navigation. VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 hotkey reference lists these bindings, but they may not behave identically in every macOS release:
| Task | Documented shortcut |
|---|---|
| Play or pause | Space |
| Enter fullscreen | F |
| Exit fullscreen | Esc |
| Increase or decrease speed | + or − |
| Return to normal speed | = |
| Mute | M |
| Jump backward or forward | Shift+Left or Shift+Right |
The hotkey reference describes these as global shortcuts, meaning they can work when VLC does not have focus. Check Preferences > Hotkeys in your installed copy to confirm or change a binding. See VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 hotkey reference.
Where does VLC save screenshots?
VideoLAN’s FAQ documents Command+Alt+S as the Mac snapshot shortcut and says the default destination is the Pictures folder when it has not been changed. Snapshot format and directory options are in Video preferences. Because the FAQ includes historical platform wording, confirm the shortcut and settings against your installed VLC version. If subtitle text is garbled or incomplete, the same FAQ recommends changing the subtitle file encoding under Subtitles/OSD preferences. See VideoLAN’s FAQ.
