Firefox offers the clearest path: right-click the page, choose Take Screenshot, then Save full page. Edge has a similar Screenshot tool with markup. Chrome and Chromium browsers can capture the complete document through DevTools’ command menu. Extensions add annotation, redaction and export controls; an API is preferable when you repeatedly capture many URLs, viewport sizes or formats.
This guide gives exact browser workflows, explains why captures can be incomplete, and shows when an automated service is more reliable.
What “full-page screenshot” actually captures
A full-page image is a rendered capture of the document beyond the current viewport. It is different from a visible-area screenshot, which records only what is on screen. The result can be a very tall PNG, JPEG or WebP, or a PDF when the tool supports document output.
Capture is based on the page state at that moment. Lazy-loaded images may not exist until you scroll to them. Sticky navigation can be repeated by stitching tools, while cookie notices, chat bubbles and newsletter dialogs can cover content. Always inspect the exported file rather than assuming that “full page” means every visual element is correct.

There is no universal winner: compare how quickly you can reach the command, whether you need the whole document or a region, available redaction and export features, browser/device support, and whether the work is one page or a recurring batch.

Firefox: the simplest built-in workflow
Save the entire page
- Open the target page in Firefox.
- Open the page context menu and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save full page.
- Download the PNG, or choose Copy if you need it on the clipboard.
Firefox also provides Save visible for the current viewport, region selection and automatic element selection. A selected region can be moved and resized with the keyboard. Mozilla notes a limitation affecting movement of the crosshair on Wayland. Firefox’s own Screenshots feature records interactions such as using Copy or Save full page, but Mozilla says it does not collect the URL or details of the captured image; review Firefox data-collection settings if that matters to your environment.
Microsoft Edge: full page plus markup
- Open the page in Edge.
- Choose Screenshot from the page’s right-click menu or from Edge Settings, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Select the full-page option rather than a selected area.
- Add markup if needed, then copy or save the result.
Microsoft describes Screenshot as a way to turn web content into a shareable image and says moving content such as GIFs or carousels can remain animated during capture. The feature’s availability and exact labels can vary by device, market and Edge version, so update Edge or check Settings if the command is missing.
Chrome and other Chromium browsers
Capture the complete document with DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome (or a Chromium browser with the same DevTools command).
- Open DevTools.
- Open the DevTools command menu.
- Search for screenshot.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot. The documented workflow saves a PNG.
This sequence is described by a commercial vendor guide rather than an official Chrome help page in the available evidence. Command names and access keys can change; if you do not see the command, type “screenshot” into the current command menu and use the full-size result shown by your version.
Capture a mobile layout
Enable device emulation in DevTools, select a phone preset or enter a custom viewport, then run Capture full size screenshot. This captures the emulated width, not a physical handset. If you need both responsive layouts, make separate desktop and mobile captures and record the viewport dimensions with each file.
Safari: a reported route, not a fixed recipe
A vendor guide reports that Safari users can enable the Develop menu, enter Responsive Design Mode, and export a PDF or capture from the Web Inspector’s Elements tab. Apple’s exact controls vary by Safari release, and the available evidence does not include a current Apple support procedure. Treat those steps as a starting point and verify them in your installed version. A PDF export and an image screenshot are different deliverables; choose based on whether you need selectable document pages or a single raster image.

Extensions: when the built-in command is not enough
An extension is useful when you repeatedly need a toolbar button, annotations, blur or pixelation, OCR, redaction, or PNG/JPG/PDF export. The Chrome Web Store listing for Full Page Screen Capture advertises full-page, visible-area and custom-area modes, editing, redaction, OCR and PNG/JPG/PDF export; its free-without-sign-up and no-watermark statements are listing claims, not an independent guarantee.
Grant an extension only the permissions appropriate for your work. For confidential dashboards, check the final export for account names, tokens, email addresses and hidden overlays before sharing. Use built-in tools when an occasional capture does not justify another extension.
When an API is the better choice
Use an API when a job runs on a schedule, covers many URLs, needs consistent desktop and phone viewports, or must produce images from CI, a backend or an AI agent. Documentation and bug reports
Capture the state that reproduces a bug, include the browser and viewport in the filename, and redact account data before filing it. A visible-area image may be better for a small control; use full page when the defect depends on content below the fold.
Design review and archival
Use PNG for crisp interface text and diagrams, JPEG when file size matters, and PDF when reviewers need pages or printing. Save the original URL, capture date, viewport and any emulation settings beside the file.

Blank sections or missing images
Scroll through the page before capturing so lazy-loaded resources have a chance to load. This may not fix every page: scripts can require interaction, authentication or a particular viewport. In an API, wait for a selector or network idle, add a delay, or use custom JavaScript.

FAQ
Can a full-page screenshot include content behind a login?
Only if the browser or service has a valid authenticated session, cookies or authorization headers. Otherwise it captures the login page or an access error.
Is a PDF the same as a full-page image?
No. A PDF preserves a paginated document-oriented format, while PNG, JPEG and WebP are raster images. Choose based on whether you need printing and selectable pages or a single visual canvas.
How should I name captures for a large collection?
Use a stable pattern such as domain-path__viewport__YYYY-MM-DD.webp, and store the source URL and settings in adjacent metadata.
