Write a short, accurate summary of the page and place it in the document’s <head> as a <meta name="description"> element. For example: <meta name="description" content="A concise, accurate summary of this page.">. Google may use it when it is a better fit for a search snippet, but it can choose text from the page instead.

What a meta description does—and what it does not do

A meta description is a page-level summary supplied in the HTML. Search engines can use that text to help form a result snippet, the preview shown beneath a result’s title. It is input for search presentation, not a command that fixes the wording of the preview.

Google says snippets are primarily created from the page content itself. It sometimes uses the description when it considers it a more accurate summary, and the text shown can vary with the search query. That means a well-written description can help a searcher understand what a page offers, but it cannot guarantee that Google will display your exact wording. Google Search Central’s guidance on writing meta descriptions explains this behavior.

The tag is not a substitute for useful page content. Write it to set accurate expectations for a person deciding whether to visit; do not treat it as a place to repeat keywords or make claims that the page does not support.

Where the tag goes in an HTML page

Put the element inside the document’s valid <head>, usually near the page’s title and other metadata. For a directly edited HTML page, the structure looks like this:

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title>How to Write an HTML Meta Description Tag</title>
  <meta name="description" content="Learn where the HTML meta description belongs, how to write a useful page summary, and why Google may show different snippet text.">
</head>
<body>
  <h1>How to Write an HTML Meta Description Tag</h1>
  <p>Page content goes here.</p>
</body>
</html>

There should be one description intended for that page in its rendered head. If the site is generated by a framework or template, edit the page’s metadata configuration rather than inserting a second tag into a component that may render in the wrong place or more than once. Google’s documentation on valid page metadata and metadata tags it supports describes why valid placement matters: invalid elements in the head can interfere with its reading of later metadata.

If the site uses a CMS

You may not need to edit HTML at all. Many content-management systems expose a search or SEO settings field for the page description; some themes or plugins provide it in the page or post editor. Enter the summary in that field, save or publish, and check the rendered page source or browser inspection view to confirm that the expected <meta name="description"> appears in the head. The exact menu and field label depend on the CMS, theme, and installed extensions, so use the setting that controls the page’s search description rather than a site-wide description field.

How to write a useful description

Start from the page rather than from a keyword list. Google recommends concise, page-specific descriptions and notes that readable, diverse programmatic descriptions can be useful for large sites. A practical drafting process is:

  1. Identify the page’s actual subject. State what a reader will find on this URL, not merely the broad topic of the site.
  2. Consider the searcher’s reason for opening it. Is the page a tutorial, comparison, product detail, reference, or answer to a specific problem?
  3. Lead with the central value. Put the most useful information early. Google may truncate displayed text to fit the device, and it may choose a different snippet.
  4. Add a concrete distinguishing detail if it helps. Mention a specific outcome, audience, or scope that is genuinely present on the page.
  5. Check it against the page. Remove promises, details, and offers that a visitor will not find after clicking.
  6. Make it distinct from descriptions on other important pages. A description that accurately summarizes this page is more helpful than repeated site-wide boilerplate.

For this article, a fitting description might be: “Learn where the HTML meta description belongs, how to write a useful page summary, and why Google may show different snippet text.” It names the article’s subject and reflects its coverage without implying that search results must reproduce it.

Avoid turning the field into a string of near-synonyms or search terms. Google warns that long keyword strings are less likely to be shown as snippets than a clear summary. Include a term when it naturally describes the page, not just because you hope to influence a result.

Writing descriptions for many pages

For a small site, writing descriptions individually makes it easier to match each page’s content and purpose. For a large catalogue or archive, programmatic generation can be practical if the result remains readable, varied, and specific to the individual page. A template can combine reliable page data—for example, a product or article name with a genuine distinguishing detail—but it should not produce identical boilerplate or awkward fields where information is missing. Google’s guidance permits programmatically generated descriptions for large sites when they are diverse and human-readable. See Google’s recommendations.

Prioritize important URLs if reviewing every page at once is not feasible. Inspect both the template and representative rendered pages: a good template can still generate poor text when source fields are empty, duplicated, or misleading.

How long should a meta description be?

Google does not prescribe a fixed maximum length for the description tag itself. Its guidance says the snippet is truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width. Consequently, there is no character count that guarantees a complete description will appear in Google Search. Put the essential point first and edit for clarity rather than stretching or cutting copy to hit a supposed universal limit. Google explains the distinction between tag length and snippet display.

Other search engines may make their own choices about whether and how to use metadata. Avoid treating Google’s snippet behavior as a universal rule for every search engine.

Check the rendered page and diagnose common problems

After editing the source or CMS field, verify what the published page actually outputs. A saved value in an editor is not enough if a theme, plugin, template, or rendering step changes the HTML.

  1. Open the published page and inspect its HTML source or use the browser’s developer tools.
  2. Find name="description" and confirm the element is inside <head>, with the intended page-specific text in its content attribute.
  3. Check that quotation marks and special characters have not broken the attribute, and that a template has not output duplicate descriptions.
  4. Review the description beside the page’s actual title and content. It should set an accurate expectation even if a search engine chooses different snippet text.
  • The tag does not appear in the rendered head: The CMS field may be a different setting, a plugin may not be active for that page, or a template may not output it. Check the final HTML and the relevant page-level metadata configuration.
  • The page has an old or generic description: Review which template or plugin controls metadata and whether a page-specific value is being overridden by a site default. Confirm the saved page value reaches the published HTML.
  • There are multiple description tags: Find the sources producing them, such as overlapping theme and plugin settings, then configure one intended page description and verify the output again.
  • Google shows different wording: This is not by itself evidence that the tag is broken. Google primarily builds snippets from page content and can select text that better matches a query. Make sure both the description and the visible content accurately represent the page.
  • The text is cut off in a result: There is no fixed Google tag-length limit to solve for. Move the key information earlier and make the sentence more concise; the display can still vary with device width and query.

When you need to inspect a rendered page visually

A browser screenshot can help check whether a page loads and whether its visible layout looks right, but it cannot prove what Google will choose for a search snippet. To verify the meta element itself, inspect the rendered HTML as described above. If you need a screenshot as a separate visual check, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a meta-description editor or a guarantee of search-result wording.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-call screenshot of a page, use ScreenshotNeo’s API. The code and available options are documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Keep control of previews separate from writing the description

If your goal is to restrict what can appear in a search preview rather than to supply a better summary, Google documents separate controls: nosnippet, max-snippet, and data-nosnippet. These are preview controls, not alternatives to writing a useful description. Choose them only when you specifically want to suppress or limit snippet text, and follow Google’s robots meta tag specifications for their behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google have a universal character count that guarantees a full description will display?

No. Google says the tag itself has no fixed maximum length, while the displayed snippet may be truncated to fit the device. Its guidance does not provide a character threshold that guarantees full display.

Can I assume Bing will display the description exactly as written?

No such guarantee or Bing-specific character limit is established in the Bing Webmaster Guidelines cited here. Avoid assuming Google’s snippet behavior applies identically to Bing.
