Start with a clear subject, a specific audience and the equipment you already have. Create a YouTube channel, publish useful videos in both long-form and Shorts formats, study how viewers respond, and improve each episode. Treat advertising as a later, eligibility-based revenue stream rather than an immediate paycheck; sponsorships, affiliate recommendations and direct audience support can provide additional routes when they fit your content and comply with disclosure rules.
1. Choose a topic you can sustain
A video blog works best when viewers know what they will get from each episode. Pick a subject you can discuss repeatedly and define the audience in one sentence—for example, “budget Android tips for first-time smartphone owners” or “weekly cooking lessons for students.”
Define the viewer benefit
Before recording, write what a viewer should learn, decide or enjoy by the end. That benefit becomes the basis for your title, opening, demonstrations and call to action.
Plan an episode
- Choose one problem, question or story.
- Outline the opening, the key points and the ending.
- Prepare any demonstrations, screen recordings or permission-cleared footage.
- Keep the scope small enough to finish and publish.
There is no verified posting frequency that guarantees growth. A sustainable process is more useful than a schedule you cannot maintain.

2. Create a YouTube channel and publish
YouTube’s official creator guidance says to sign in with a Google Account and create a channel. From YouTube’s Create flow, upload a video file for a long-form episode. Shorts can be created or uploaded in the YouTube mobile app.
- Sign in to YouTube with your Google Account.
- Use the account menu to create your channel and choose a clear channel name and profile image.
- Record a focused episode and edit out pauses or sections that do not serve the viewer.
- Open Create and select the upload option for a long-form video, or use the YouTube mobile app for a Short.
- Add an accurate title, a useful description and an appropriate thumbnail; check visibility and audience settings before publishing.
- After publication, review audience response and use what you learn to shape the next episode.
Shorts can help you test concise ideas, while longer uploads provide room for tutorials, reviews, interviews and stories. You do not need to choose only one format.

3. Start with the equipment you have
YouTube’s April 8, 2025 Shorts guide states: “You don’t need fancy equipment. Your smartphone is your primary tool.” A phone you already own can be enough to begin.
Fix the limitation that viewers notice

YouTube production guidance for nonprofit creators discusses lavalier microphones, natural light, stable phone positioning and deliberate framing. Use those ideas to solve a real production problem instead of buying a complete “creator setup” in advance. No particular phone, camera or accessory brand is required.

4. Make videos that can qualify for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies emphasize original, varied substance. Copied material without meaningful modification and repetitive or generic videos can fail monetization standards. Build a distinct point of view, add your own explanation or reporting, and use music, clips, images and other material that you have permission to use.
Keep a repeatable production loop
- Research the viewer’s question: identify the exact decision or task your episode addresses.
- Record your contribution: explain, demonstrate, compare or tell the story in your own words.
- Edit for clarity: remove dead time and make context clear when using any outside material.
- Publish honestly: make the title and thumbnail match what the video delivers.
- Review response: note comments, audience retention and recurring questions, then improve the next episode.
5. Understand YouTube ad-revenue eligibility
For ad-revenue eligibility in YouTube’s current Help guidance, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours on long-form videos during the previous 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views during the previous 90 days. These are eligibility thresholds, not an earnings estimate or a promise of approval.

You must also be in a region where the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) is available, accept the applicable terms, follow monetization policies and pass channel review. YouTube’s YPP overview also lists the absence of active Community Guidelines strikes as a condition. Individual features can have additional requirements, and availability varies by region.
What YPP can include after approval
- Advertising revenue.
- A share of YouTube Premium revenue.
- Shopping features, where available.
- Fan-funding tools such as channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks, subject to their separate requirements.
Reaching the subscriber and viewing thresholds does not automatically activate every feature. Check the current YouTube Help requirements immediately before applying because thresholds, policies and availability can change.

6. Use more than one income route
There is no reliable general figure for a new video blogger’s income or a universal timetable for first revenue. Your options depend on audience trust, topic, engagement, eligibility, location and the terms of each partner.

Do not rank these methods by expected income without reliable, comparable evidence. A small but highly relevant audience may be more valuable for a particular product than a larger, less engaged one, but outcomes are not predictable from subscriber count alone.
7. Put sponsorship and affiliate disclosures in the video
U.S. Federal Trade Commission staff guidance says: “If making an endorsement in a video, the disclosure should be in the video and not just in the description uploaded with the video.” Place the disclosure with the endorsement message—spoken in the video, shown on screen, or both—so viewers see it when the recommendation occurs. Use YouTube’s branded-content disclosure controls when applicable, and follow the laws that apply to your audience and location. The FTC guidance is U.S.-specific, not a complete statement of every country’s rules.
8. Handle taxes and records
YouTube notes that creators may be liable for taxes on income and directs them to their local tax authorities. Keep records of platform payments, sponsorship invoices, affiliate commissions and business expenses, then obtain advice appropriate to your jurisdiction. No single tax rate or filing method applies to every creator.

- Days 1–3: choose the topic, define the intended viewer and list 10 useful episode ideas.
- Days 4–7: create the channel, outline the first episode and test framing, sound and lighting with your existing phone.
- Week 2: publish one focused long-form video and one or more Shorts derived from ideas you can explain accurately.
- Week 3: answer genuine viewer questions and correct unclear sections in your next script.
- Week 4: review which topics attracted the most useful response, then plan the next set of episodes around demonstrated viewer needs.
This plan is a workflow, not a guaranteed growth formula. Continue investing only when a specific recurring problem—sound, stability, lighting or workflow speed—justifies the expense.
