How to Leave a Facebook Group on iPhone or PC in 2026

Open the Facebook group, select Joined, choose Leave group, then confirm. Facebook says it does not notify members automatically when you leave, though your name is removed from the member list.

Leave a Facebook group on iPhone

  1. Open the Facebook app and go to the group you want to leave.
  2. Tap Joined near the group header.
  3. Tap Leave group.
  4. Tap Leave group again to confirm.

If Joined is not immediately visible, check the group header or its options menu. Button placement can vary with app layout and screen size.

Leave a Facebook group on a PC

  1. In a desktop browser, go to facebook.com/groups and open the group.
  2. Click Joined near the upper-right area of the group page.
  3. Select Leave group, then click Leave group again to confirm.

These are Facebook’s documented steps; the page also provides iPhone app and computer help categories. The exact interface can change, so the control may look or appear differently across versions.

What happens when you leave?

Facebook says leaving removes you from the group’s member list and your groups list. Group notifications stop, and group posts should no longer appear in your Feed. Other members also will not know when you have seen group posts, including posts you viewed before leaving. Facebook’s group-leaving help page says members are not notified automatically. That is not the same as being invisible: someone could notice your absence by checking the member list.

Does leaving delete your old posts or comments?

Facebook’s leave-group instructions do not say that leaving automatically deletes your past posts, comments, reactions, or uploads. Leaving changes your membership; it should not be treated as a delete-all-history feature. If you want particular contributions removed, review them separately.

If you are the only admin

Before leaving, consider whether the group needs another administrator. Facebook says it prompts a sole admin who leaves to invite one or more new admins. If no replacement is selected or an invite is not accepted within seven days, the group may be automatically paused; it is not immediately deleted. The help page describes an invitation prompt, not a universal requirement to transfer ownership.

A creator is not trapped in the group: Facebook says a group creator can remove themselves as an admin or leave, even though another admin cannot remove the creator. Facebook’s creator and admin guidance explains this distinction.

Leave the group or turn off notifications?

Choose based on whether you want to remain a member. Facebook offers group notification settings including All posts, Highlights, Friends’ posts, and Off. Facebook’s notification guidance covers these choices.

A Facebook group is not a Messenger group chat

A Facebook group page and a Messenger group conversation are separate products with different controls. If you mean a chat rather than a community page, use the chat’s separate leave-chat option.

If “Leave group” is missing

  • Make sure you opened the Facebook group page, not a Messenger chat or a Feed post.
  • Open the group directly and look for Joined in its header or options menu.
  • Check that you are using the profile or Page that belongs to the group; switch profiles if needed.
  • On iPhone, restart or update the Facebook app, then check again.
  • Try Facebook in a desktop browser if the app still does not show the control.
  • If the group itself is missing, check whether you are viewing the right profile and whether the group remains available. A missing group alone does not prove you were banned; it could have been renamed, paused, deleted, or become inaccessible for another reason.

Facebook says hidden private groups can still be found by current, invited, and former members, while public groups are always visible. Visibility of members differs too: anyone on Facebook can see members of a public group, while only members can see other members of a private group. See Facebook’s guidance on hidden groups and its public and private group explanation.

Leaving, pausing, and deleting are different

Leaving removes one person’s membership. Pausing temporarily stops group activity, while deleting removes the group itself through a separate admin process. Facebook says a group can be deleted only when it has no members: admins must remove or ban other members before leaving as the final member. Deletion is permanent. See Facebook’s guidance on pausing a group and deleting a group.
