X (formerly Twitter) uses different limits for consumer actions, account protections, browser sessions, apps, and API endpoints. A rate-limit message alone does not prove that your account is suspended.
What “rate limit exceeded” means
X limits how often an action can be performed during a defined period. The limit may apply to posting, replying, following, direct messages, reading requests, a particular account, an app or browser session, or an API endpoint. Repeatedly clicking Retry, refreshing, reposting, or resending can create more requests and may prolong the failure or trigger additional protections.

For developers, X documents error code 88 as “Rate limit exceeded,” with HTTP status 429 Too Many Requests: X API response codes and errors.
First checks: limit, outage, or local problem?
- Stop submitting the failed action. Note whether reading, posting, replying, liking, reposting, following, direct messaging, email changes, or an API call failed.
- Wait before testing again. Do not assume every error clears in 15 minutes; consumer daily limits, API windows, and account restrictions use different periods.
- Try another access path. Open x.com in a private window, or use the official mobile app if the browser fails. If the app fails, test x.com in a mobile browser.
- Compare accounts, devices, and networks. If another account works on the same device, the problem may be account-specific. If every account fails everywhere, suspect an incident or network problem.
- For developer applications, check the official status page. The X Developer Platform status page covers API and developer-platform incidents, not necessarily every consumer-app outage.
Browser fixes for x.com
These steps remove client-side causes; they cannot erase a server-enforced quota. X’s troubleshooting guidance is available at Help with X.com.

- Check the internet connection and switch networks if possible.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy.
- Open x.com in a private or incognito window.
- Update the browser.
- Log out and sign back in.
- Clear X-related cookies and cached site data.
- Disable extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, and automation tools. Re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict.
- Review connected applications and revoke unnecessary third-party access.
If X works in a private window but not in your normal browser, stale site data or an extension is more likely than a genuine account quota.
Mobile-app troubleshooting
Use these as diagnostic steps, not guaranteed cures for a server-side limit:
- Force-close and reopen the official X app.
- Install the latest version from your device’s official app store.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or private DNS service.
- Sign out and back in if the app permits it.
- On Android, clear the app cache first. Clearing storage removes local app data, so do that only if you know your credentials and recovery method.
- Reinstall the official app only after confirming that you can sign in again.
- Test x.com in a mobile browser to separate an app fault from an account or server problem.
Check X’s published consumer limits
X’s Help Center lists the following current technical limits, checked August 18, 2026. X can change them, and not every “rate limit exceeded” message means one of these quotas was exhausted.

These figures come from Understanding X limits. X says activity is counted across web, mobile, phone, and API access, and that the daily post allowance is subdivided into smaller semi-hourly limits. “Unverified” is X’s wording on that page; do not infer what a subscription changes unless current X documentation confirms it.

Posting or replying
You may have reached a post or reply allowance, be temporarily limited, or be encountering a compose-request failure. Try one short text-only post without links, media, hashtags, or mentions. Submit it once; repeated presses can create duplicate posts if an earlier request eventually succeeds. If posting alone fails after heavy recent activity, waiting is safer than attempting workarounds.
Following, liking, or reposting
High-volume engagement can trigger an account restriction in addition to published quotas. Stop the activity, check for an account notice, and wait for the restriction period rather than rotating accounts, IP addresses, or clients.

Direct messages
A failed DM can reflect the 500-per-day published limit, a temporary account restriction, a recipient or content issue, or a local session problem. Test another access path once, then stop sending while you determine which condition applies.
Media Studio scheduling
Media Studio has a separate condition: its FAQ says “Scheduling failed for @user. Error – 2: Rate limit exceeded” can occur at 1,000 draft or scheduled posts. That cap is distinct from ordinary API request limits and everyday posting limits: Media Studio FAQs.

Account restriction versus ordinary rate limiting
An account-specific cause is more likely when the error follows your account across web and mobile, another account works on the same network, or you recently performed many follows, likes, reposts, quotes, replies, DMs, or posts. X says aggressive following and engagement can result in temporary limits whose duration varies. If you believe the restriction is incorrect, use the appeal or support route described in Locked or restricted X accounts.

How long to wait
Consumer action limits require waiting until that action’s period ends. A daily post, DM, or follow allowance may last substantially longer than an API window. Do not use a universal 15-minute rule.
For APIs, many endpoint limits use 15-minute windows, but the endpoint’s documentation controls. The x-rate-limit-reset response header gives the Unix timestamp when the current window resets: X Rate Limits.
Fixing HTTP 429 or error code 88 in the X API
Consumer browser steps such as clearing cookies do not reset an API quota. Inspect the response and authentication context:

- HTTP status and error code (429 and 88).
- The endpoint being called.
x-rate-limit-limit,x-rate-limit-remaining, andx-rate-limit-reset.- Whether the request uses an app-only bearer token or a per-user access token.
- Whether the failure is a monthly product cap or post cap rather than a rolling request limit.
X explains app-level and user-context limits in its API error support documentation. An app-level limit can apply globally to app-only requests; a user-context limit applies per user access token.

In production, cache responses, reduce polling, batch requests where supported, use streaming for suitable real-time workloads, apply exponential backoff, and honor the reset timestamp. Review the current endpoint tables at X API Rate Limits. If the application genuinely needs more capacity, review official access options through X Developer Platform; higher access will not necessarily change consumer account limits or restrictions.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly click Retry, Post, Send, or refresh the timeline.
- Do not create duplicate posts to test whether the limit cleared.
- Do not use unofficial clients, automation, account rotation, IP rotation, or token rotation to evade a restriction.
- Do not assume a VPN, cache cleaner, subscription, or account deletion will remove a server-side quota.
When to contact X support
Escalate after the relevant waiting period and the matching browser, app, network, and account checks fail. Start at the X Help Center. Developers can use X Developer Support.
Include your username, exact error text, failed action, approximate time and time zone, device, operating system, app or browser version, network tested, and whether another account or device reproduces the problem. Attach a screenshot or API response with API keys, bearer tokens, cookies, and personal information removed.
