A black rectangle in a screenshot has two very different causes: the image may contain opaque black pixels, or the file may still have transparency that your previewer renders as black. Test the file on a bright, solid-color canvas before editing anything. If the bright color shows through, the alpha channel is intact and you only need a viewer or document that composites transparency. If the rectangle stays black, the image is opaque or transparency was lost during export or sharing.
First, determine whether the black is real
- Keep the original file. Work on a copy so you do not overwrite a version that still contains transparency.
- Open or insert it over a vivid background. Use a red, green, or checkerboard canvas in an image editor, slide app, or design document.
- Read the result. If the color appears around the subject, the black was only the current preview. If a solid black rectangle remains, the pixels are opaque or the alpha data was removed.
PNG transparency is stored per pixel. The W3C-hosted PNG specification explains that alpha zero is fully transparent, the maximum value is fully opaque, and intermediate values are composited with a background. A PNG without an alpha channel or transparency information has fully opaque pixels. The same specification also allows viewers to support transparency only partially or not at all, so a black preview alone is not proof that black was baked into the image.
When the file is transparent but previews black
Use a compositing-aware viewer
Open the original PNG in an editor that displays alpha over a checkerboard or colored canvas, then place it in the document where you intend to use it. If it looks correct there, do not remove the background or re-export merely to change a thumbnail. A gallery, chat attachment preview, browser surface, or operating-system thumbnail can choose black as its display color when it does not fully composite alpha.
Preserve the original PNG
Do not flatten the image onto black and do not convert it to JPEG just to make the preview look different. Flattening destroys the ability to place the subject over another color. Keep the transparent source and create a separate flattened copy only when a destination requires a solid background.

When black pixels are actually in the image
Return to the editable source
If you have the layered artwork, reopen it and hide the background, paper, or canvas layer. Confirm the area around the subject shows transparency in the editor. Then export to a format and setting that retain alpha.
Clip Studio Paint procedure
Clip Studio’s documented workflow is product-specific but illustrates the required sequence:
- Hide the Paper layer.
- Choose an export format that supports transparency, such as PNG or WebP.
- Enable Export transparency. In versions before Clip Studio Paint 4.1, this setting was named Export alpha channel.
- Open the exported file over a bright background to verify it before sharing.
Clip Studio states that JPEG and BMP do not carry transparent information. PNG is usually the safer choice when the receiving app’s WebP support is uncertain.
If you only have a flattened screenshot
A flattened image has no hidden layer to restore. You must select and remove the black area with an editor, refine edges around the subject, and export with transparency enabled. Results depend on the contrast between the subject and black; hair, shadows, and antialiased edges may require manual cleanup. If the black is part of the subject or a genuine screen capture, background removal will erase real content, so compare the file with the original screen first.

Format and export checks

iPhone screenshots: check Screen Capture mode
On a current iPhone, open Settings > General > Screen Capture. Apple documents PNG for SDR captures and HEIF for HDR captures. This setting helps identify a format or display mismatch, but it is not a universal repair for a black background. If the image is an HDR HEIF file, test it on a compatible HDR display and in an app that supports the format. If the black area remains when composited over a colored canvas, the issue is in the pixels or export path rather than the display mode.
Windows capture and editing options
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool supports capturing, saving, annotating, and cropping screenshots. A snip can be opened in Paint for further edits. These built-in tools are useful for recapturing a clean image or removing an unwanted area, but Microsoft’s documentation does not claim that Snipping Tool or Paint can recover an alpha channel that was already lost. Use the colored-canvas test before assuming either program can restore transparency automatically.
Why transparency disappears during sharing
- Export format changed: Saving as JPEG or another opaque format flattens transparent regions.
- Background layer remained visible: The source looked transparent only because you were viewing a different layer state.
- Copy-and-paste route flattened the image: Some applications copy a rendered bitmap instead of the original alpha data.
- Preview limitation: The file is still transparent, but the receiving surface composites it against black.
- HDR/SDR conversion: An iPhone HDR HEIF may be converted or displayed differently by software that does not preserve the original mode.
Compare three versions when troubleshooting: the original export, the file after sharing or downloading, and the preview in which you noticed black. Test each over the same bright canvas. That isolates whether the loss happened at export, transfer, or display.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Black appears only in one app
Open the same file in a transparency-aware editor. If the colored canvas shows through, keep the PNG and change the viewing or insertion route. Do not flatten it to “fix” a display-only problem.

Black appears everywhere
Inspect the file over a colored canvas. If it remains black, return to the source, hide its background layer, and export with transparency enabled. If no source exists, remove the black pixels manually and inspect edges at high zoom.
The exported file is transparent, but a website shows black
Check whether the website or component applies a black CSS background or uses a renderer with incomplete alpha support. Test the asset in a neutral HTML or design document before changing the file. If you control the page, set an intentional background color rather than relying on a viewer’s default.
Edges have dark halos
This usually indicates that edge pixels were blended against black before export. Re-export from the layered source with transparency enabled instead of trying to erase the halo from a flattened copy. PNG stores unassociated, non-premultiplied alpha; premultiplied values are effectively already composited against black, but the specification does not establish that premultiplication is the usual cause of every black-background report.
The image changed after sending it
Download the received file and compare its format and dimensions with the original. If the sender converted it to JPEG or another opaque format, request the original PNG or export a new transparent copy.

Prevent black backgrounds on future exports
- Keep a layered master with the paper or background layer hidden when transparency is required.
- Export PNG (or transparent WebP where supported) and explicitly enable the application’s transparency option.
- Open the exported file over both a light and dark test canvas.
- Send the original file as a document or download rather than a route known to compress images.
- Label flattened versions clearly so they are not mistaken for the transparent master.
