Use the API that matches what you are trying to capture. For a screenshot of an Electron app’s rendered page, call webContents.capturePage(); it returns a promise for a NativeImage. For repeatable test artifacts, launch the app with Playwright and call window.screenshot(). If you need a display or another desktop window as a media source, use desktopCapturer and the media-capture flow instead. These paths are related, but they do not produce the same kind of screenshot.
Choose the right Electron capture path
| What you need | Use | Result |
|---|---|---|
A snapshot of HTML and UI rendered by an Electron WebContents |
webContents.capturePage([rect, opts]) |
A promise resolving to a NativeImage; omit rect to capture the whole visible page. |
| A screenshot saved during an automated test | Playwright’s Electron API and window.screenshot({ path }) |
A repeatable image artifact tied to an app launch and test run. |
| The entire display or another desktop window as a media source | desktopCapturer.getSources(...) plus media capture |
Screen/window sources for sharing or recording, with operating-system permission requirements. |
The first option is normally the shortest route for documentation, bug reports, and a one-off page image. It captures the page rendered by Electron, not every pixel of the operating-system desktop around the window.
Capture an Electron page with webContents.capturePage
Run this in the main process, after the window has been created and its content is ready. The optional rectangle is useful when you need a panel, chart, or other region rather than the complete visible page.
const { app, BrowserWindow } = require('electron');
const fs = require('node:fs');
let win;
app.whenReady().then(async () => {
win = new BrowserWindow({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await win.loadURL('https://example.com');
// Whole visible page
const fullImage = await win.webContents.capturePage();
fs.writeFileSync('electron-page.png', fullImage.toPNG());
// A rectangle in page coordinates
const panel = await win.webContents.capturePage({
x: 40,
y: 80,
width: 720,
height: 480
});
fs.writeFileSync('electron-panel.png', panel.toPNG());
});
capturePage resolves to a NativeImage. The example encodes that image as PNG and writes it to disk; you can keep the object in memory instead if another part of your application will process it. Coordinates in the rectangle describe the area of the rendered page, so verify the layout and device scale used by your window before hard-coding them.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Use capture options when a window is hidden
The API accepts an options object including stayHidden and stayAwake. Pass a rectangle and options together when you need a bounded capture, or pass undefined for the rectangle when capturing the whole page with options.
const image = await win.webContents.capturePage(undefined, {
stayHidden: true,
stayAwake: true
});
fs.writeFileSync('hidden-window.png', image.toPNG());
Whether a hidden window can be captured in your exact configuration depends on the window state and the Electron version you ship. Treat the returned promise as asynchronous and catch failures rather than assuming an image is always available.
Expose capture through a controlled IPC handler
If a renderer button should trigger a screenshot, keep filesystem access in the main process. Register a narrow IPC handler and validate any path or rectangle supplied by the renderer.

const { app, BrowserWindow, ipcMain } = require('electron');
const fs = require('node:fs');
let win;
app.whenReady().then(() => {
win = new BrowserWindow({
webPreferences: {
preload: __dirname + '/preload.js',
contextIsolation: true,
nodeIntegration: false
}
});
win.loadFile('index.html');
});
ipcMain.handle('save-page-shot', async (_event, rect) => {
const image = await win.webContents.capturePage(rect || undefined);
const file = __dirname + '/latest-shot.png';
fs.writeFileSync(file, image.toPNG());
return file;
});
A preload script can expose a single function through contextBridge; do not expose unrestricted filesystem or IPC primitives to untrusted page content. For a fixed capture, omit renderer-supplied paths entirely and choose the destination in the main process.
Take screenshots in an automated Electron test with Playwright
Playwright’s Electron API is a good fit when the screenshot must be reproducible in CI or attached to a test report. Launch the application, obtain its first window, and save the screenshot with the documented window API.
const { _electron: electron } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const app = await electron.launch({ args: ['.'] });
try {
const window = await app.firstWindow();
await window.screenshot({ path: 'intro.png' });
} finally {
await app.close();
}
})();
Replace args: ['.'] with the entry point or arguments your packaged development app expects. In a larger test, wait for the state that proves the target view is ready before calling screenshot; otherwise you may capture a loading shell instead of the feature under test. Keep the output path unique per test or overwrite it deliberately so stale artifacts cannot be mistaken for a current run.

When Playwright is the better choice
- Use it when every screenshot should come from a known app launch and test fixture.
- Use it when the test already drives clicks, navigation, and assertions before taking the image.
- Use
capturePageinstead when you are adding a production feature or a small diagnostic command and do not need a separate automation runner.
Capture a display or desktop window with desktopCapturer
desktopCapturer enumerates screen and window sources for media capture. A source exposes an ID, a name, and a thumbnail. Screen sources are named “Entire Screen” or “Screen <index>”; a window source uses its window title. This is the correct path for screen sharing, recording, or a feature that must include pixels outside the app’s own rendered page.
const { desktopCapturer } = require('electron');
async function listCaptureSources() {
const sources = await desktopCapturer.getSources({
types: ['screen', 'window'],
thumbnailSize: { width: 640, height: 360 }
});
return sources.map(source => ({
id: source.id,
name: source.name,
thumbnail: source.thumbnail.toDataURL()
}));
}
listCaptureSources().then(console.log).catch(console.error);
Listing sources is only the first half of media capture. Your renderer must select a source and request a media stream using the source ID in the Electron media-capture constraints, then attach that stream to a video element or recorder. Keep source selection visible to the user; silently choosing a desktop window can expose unrelated content.
macOS permission requirement
Electron documents that screen-content capture requires user consent on macOS 10.15 Catalina and later. You can check the current status with systemPreferences.getMediaAccessStatus and direct the user to the operating-system privacy controls when access has not been granted. Do not treat source enumeration as proof that capture will succeed.

Make captures reliable
Wait for the page you intend to document
Call capturePage after navigation and application rendering have completed. For data-driven views, wait for the element or state that indicates the data is present. A screenshot API cannot infer whether a loading spinner is acceptable for your use case.
Choose a bounded rectangle when full-page context is unnecessary
A rectangle reduces the amount of image data you encode and makes visual comparisons less sensitive to unrelated layout changes. Keep the rectangle tied to stable coordinates or calculate it from the layout in the renderer, then pass the validated values to the main process.
Handle failures explicitly
async function saveShot(contents, file) {
try {
const image = await contents.capturePage();
fs.writeFileSync(file, image.toPNG());
return { ok: true, file };
} catch (error) {
return { ok: false, message: error.message };
}
}
Log the navigation URL, window state, rectangle, and error message with each failed attempt. That context distinguishes a page that never finished loading from a path or permission problem.

Common problems and fixes
- The image shows a blank or loading page. Capture only after the app has reached a known-ready state. Move the call after your navigation and data-rendering signal rather than adding an arbitrary delay first.
- The wrong area is captured. Remove the rectangle to verify the full page, then check its
x,y,width, andheightagainst the rendered page’s coordinate system. - A hidden-window capture is inconsistent. Try a normal visible capture, then add the documented
stayHiddenandstayAwakeoptions deliberately. Confirm behavior against the Electron version used by your application. - Playwright captures the wrong window. Use
app.firstWindow()only when the first window is reliably the target; otherwise wait for the specific window your test creates before taking the screenshot. - Desktop capture works on one machine but not another. Check operating-system screen-recording consent, especially on macOS 10.15 and later, and verify the status before requesting the stream.
- A media thumbnail is a different size than requested. Source thumbnail dimensions are not guaranteed to equal the requested dimensions; actual dimensions depend on screen or window scaling.
- A test hangs while opening a native dialog. Playwright’s Electron automation does not intercept native Electron dialogs that go directly to operating-system APIs. Handle those dialogs with an OS-level strategy or redesign the test to avoid them.
Or skip the browser setup
If the thing you need is a URL-rendered page rather than a local desktop surface, ScreenshotNeo can return an image with one request. It is not a replacement for desktopCapturer and cannot capture an arbitrary local Electron window, but it is useful when your Electron UI is also published at a reachable web URL.
The API accepts the URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/electron-page -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/electron-page"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/electron-page' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before the capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it without a card.

- Local Electron capture: no external screenshot service is involved, so the image stays in your application until you write or transmit it. You are responsible for encoding, storage, retries, and test-artifact retention.
- Playwright capture: startup and app-launch time are part of each test unless you reuse a fixture. Reusing a launched app can improve throughput, but isolate tests when shared state could change the image.
- Desktop media capture: screen recording and sharing add stream-management and permission work. Ask for only the source types your feature needs and provide a clear source picker.
- Remote URL capture: ScreenshotNeo removes failed or unclean results from billing, while its response headers let a job inspect the verdict. It is appropriate for reachable web pages, not private pixels in an unsaved desktop window.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Are desktopCapturer thumbnails guaranteed to have the requested dimensions?
No. Electron documents that the actual thumbnail dimensions depend on the scale of the screen or window and may differ from the requested size.
Can Playwright’s Electron automation control native operating-system dialogs?
No. Its documented automation does not intercept native Electron dialogs that call operating-system APIs directly.
The Bottom Line
Use webContents.capturePage for an Electron page snapshot, Playwright for repeatable test screenshots, and desktopCapturer for screen or window media. Choose ScreenshotNeo only when the target is a reachable web URL and you want a managed, clean capture instead of controlling a local desktop window.
