You can create an animated Open Graph image by exporting a GIF, hosting it at a public URL, and setting that URL in your page’s og:image metadata. The important limitation is that Open Graph does not guarantee animation: many link-preview renderers show only the GIF’s first frame. Design that frame as a complete, readable static image, then test the deployed page on the services where people will share it.
What an animated Open Graph image is—and what it is not
An Open Graph (OG) image is the image a service may use when it creates a preview for a shared web page. The Open Graph Protocol describes metadata in a page’s <head>, including the image URL selected for the share object. The protocol defines og:image, but it does not promise that every social network, messaging app, or preview renderer will play an animated GIF. The Open Graph Protocol also has separate video metadata; an animated image supplied as og:image should not be confused with a video preview or with a GIF uploaded directly as post or advertising media.
For that reason, make the first GIF frame carry the essential message: page title or subject, recognizable branding if needed, and enough context to make sense without motion. Use later frames to add movement or detail, not to reveal information that a static preview must have.

Choose the asset and canvas
For a manually authored share image, export a GIF and check how it looks both in motion and with animation disabled. If broad compatibility matters more than motion, use a static PNG or JPEG instead. A third-party guide updated in July 2026 recommends 1200 × 630 pixels as a broadly compatible share-image canvas; that is practical guidance, not an Open Graph protocol requirement. Platform guidance and rendering behavior can vary. OG Image Design’s size guide also cautions that animated GIFs render as their first frame almost everywhere; treat that as a compatibility warning, not an official guarantee.

- Keep the main title, logo, and other essential elements away from the edges, where a preview crop could cut them off.
- Keep the animation short and make the loop feel intentional. Check the exported file’s dimensions and weight against the current requirements of the platforms you care about.
- Use one stable, publicly reachable asset URL. If you replace the image, remember that preview services may retain cached copies.
Add Open Graph metadata to the page
Place the metadata in the HTML head returned for the page URL people will share. The protocol’s four required basic properties are og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Open Graph also defines image fields for MIME type, width, height, secure URL, and alt text. Here is a minimal example with useful image details; replace the example title, canonical page URL, image URL, and description with your own values:

</head>The example’s 1200 × 630 dimensions are a suggested canvas, not a protocol mandate. Report the dimensions and media type that match the actual exported file. The alt text should describe the image’s useful content rather than promise that a particular service will animate it. If you provide an alternate secure image URL, ensure it points to the intended asset.

Use a framework convention or generate images in code
If a site has many pages with different titles or artwork, generating an image per route can be easier to maintain than hand-exporting each file. The implementation details depend on the framework and how the page data is available.
Next.js App Router
In Next.js App Router, a route segment can include a file named opengraph-image.gif. Next.js recognizes the convention and adds the corresponding metadata tags. Its metadata-file convention also supports code-generated images in JavaScript or TypeScript. Generated images are statically optimized at build time by default and cached. Request-time APIs or uncached data are exceptions, so consider whether your image should reflect build-time content or data that changes per request. For other frameworks, use their own metadata and image-generation mechanisms; the OG tags still need to be present in the document head for the shared URL.
Deploy and validate the real share URL
- Publish the asset and page. Confirm that the image URL is absolute, publicly retrievable by preview crawlers, and serves the intended GIF. A file that loads only in your authenticated browser will not work as a public preview image.
- Inspect the delivered head. View the deployed page’s HTML and check that the OG properties appear in the head for the exact URL being shared. Confirm the title, canonical URL, image URL, media type, dimensions, and alt text.
- Run the platform’s available preview or inspection flow. Use the tools available to the site owner, then test a real share in representative desktop and mobile clients. A generator or validator may help create or inspect metadata, but it cannot establish how every consumer will render the animation. OG Image Generator documentation lists examples of generator, validator, framework, and dynamic-image tools.
- Recheck after changes. Preview consumers may cache page metadata and image results. LinkedIn notes that cached content can remain stale and may take time to refresh; its website-sharing guidance is at Make your website shareable on LinkedIn. Do not assume that changing the asset URL alone clears every service’s cache.
LinkedIn’s guidance on website link sharing concerns OGP fields and share images. Its separate GIF frame limits for single-image ads are about ad media, not proof that an animated GIF used as a link preview will play. Likewise, Google Search Central treats video previews and thumbnails separately: for OGP video it identifies og:video:image as a thumbnail field, and it cautions that markup does not guarantee a particular Search feature. Choose between a static file and a generated image

Troubleshoot missing, incorrect, or stale previews
- No preview image appears: Check that
og:imageis present in the deployed page head, contains a complete absolute URL, and points to an asset the service can retrieve without a login or other browser-only access. - The wrong image or title appears: Inspect the HTML returned for the exact shared URL, not just a local source file or a different canonical route. Check for duplicate or conflicting OG tags and verify that the image URL points to the intended asset.
- The preview is stale after an update: The service may have cached the old page or image. Use its available refresh or inspection flow and allow for cache delays; do not assume changing the filename or image URL will refresh every consumer.
- The GIF appears still: That is compatible with the protocol. The consumer may show only the first frame. Make that frame work on its own; switch to a static image if movement is not worth the compatibility uncertainty.
- The image is cropped or text is cut off: Check the rendered preview, not just the source file. Keep critical content within a central safe area and use the destination’s current image guidance.
- The declared image details seem wrong: Make sure the declared MIME type and pixel dimensions match the actual exported file. Correct the metadata and validate the deployed URL again.

Does Open Graph require a GIF’s first frame to be a complete image?
No. That is a practical design choice for consumers that show only a static frame, not a protocol requirement.
Is a GIF uploaded directly as a social post the same as an animated og:image?
No. Direct post or ad media follows separate product rules; those rules do not establish how a link-preview renderer treats an og:image GIF.
Does Google guarantee that Open Graph metadata will produce a Search preview?
