Overview

Transcrypt turns a substantial subset of Python into compact, readable JavaScript 6, with optional minification. This makes Python a viable authoring language for browser code, but it does not make the browser a runtime for arbitrary Python: code is compiled ahead of time, and exec and eval in Python are unsupported. JavaScript eval is supported. The Apache 2.0 license and free plan remove a cost barrier, while the compatibility limits deserve attention before committing a project to it.

Key features

Python language support: Transcrypt supports modules, multiple inheritance, comprehensions, and async/await, among a fairly extensive subset of Python. Optional static type validation and consistency checks can help catch issues before output reaches the browser. It remains a subset, so code that depends on dynamic execution such as Python exec or eval will not carry over directly.
JavaScript and browser interoperability: Transcrypt code can call JavaScript functions and use browser DOM functions and JavaScript libraries. Examples include jQuery, React, Fabric.js, D3.js, Plotly.js, and Riot. This is its defining practical strength for web-client teams that want Python authoring without giving up the JavaScript ecosystem.
Debugging and output: Multilevel sourcemaps let developers trace generated JavaScript back to Python source, and the compiler can minify its JavaScript output. Together, these tools make the compile step more workable during development and deployment.
Node.js target: Transcrypt can also compile Python server code for Node.js and use Node libraries through require(). That extends its reach beyond browser clients, though the project's stated focus remains browser development rather than desktop Python libraries.

Pricing

Transcrypt costs 0.00 USD per free. The free and open-source plan is under the Apache 2.0 license, with no obligation to donate. There is no paid tier to unlock a broader feature set, and no free-trial decision to make. Optional donations support the project; commercial support is available on demand.

Transcrypt — 0.00 USD per free: The plan includes the open-source compiler and CLI access. It suits individual developers and teams evaluating or building projects within Transcrypt's supported Python subset. The trade-off is not a cheaper tier's feature cap, but the compiler's language and library boundaries: Python exec and eval are unsupported, and C or C++ libraries are not directly supported for browser use without special measures such as compiling them to asm.js.

Platforms

Transcrypt is tested under Windows, Linux, and OSX, and its stated platforms include macOS, Windows, Linux, web, and self-hosted use. The recommended installation method is pip as a Python package. Its browser focus makes it a fit for web clients, while Node.js compilation provides a server-side target as well.

Who it's for

Choose Transcrypt if you want to write browser applications in Python, expect to use JavaScript libraries or browser DOM functions, and can keep your code within its precompiled subset. It is particularly relevant when Python is the preferred authoring language but JavaScript interoperability is still essential.

Look elsewhere if your application relies on Python's dynamic execution, desktop-oriented Python libraries, or direct use of C and C++ libraries in the browser. Those needs collide with the design choices that make Transcrypt focused and JavaScript-compatible.

Pros and cons

Pro — Direct JavaScript access: Calling JavaScript functions and using browser APIs and libraries keeps the web ecosystem within reach while writing Python source.
Pro — Useful development tools: Sourcemaps, optional checks, and minification address debugging and output needs around the compilation workflow.
Pro — No license cost: The Apache 2.0 open-source plan is free, with no obligation to donate.
Con — Not all Python transfers: Precompilation rules out Python exec and eval, which matters for code that depends on runtime execution.
Con — JavaScript-centered library support: The project does not directly support C or C++ libraries for browser use, and it is not aimed at desktop Python libraries.
Con — Support is community-oriented by default: The FAQ recommends Stack Overflow; commercial support is available on demand.

Alternatives

Code Transpilers is the broader category for comparing tools in this space.

SWC is a free, open-source Rust-based developer toolchain; consider it instead if that toolchain is a better fit than Python-to-JavaScript compilation.
Babel is a free, community-funded option with no paid tiers or usage limits stated; choose it if you want that JavaScript-transformation alternative rather than authoring web code in Python.
ClojureScript is free, open source under the Eclipse Public License 1.0, and covers Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms; pick it if that alternative better suits your project.
Google Web Toolkit is a free, open-source Apache 2.0 option; consider it if you prefer that alternative.
Kotlin/JS is a free Kotlin compiler target for JavaScript configured with the Kotlin Multiplatform Gradle plugin; choose it if Kotlin is the language you want to compile to JavaScript.
Cython is freely available under the Apache 2.0 license; consider it as another free, open-source option.
Vala is free, with no paid plans or usage limits stated on its official pages; it is an alternative if you want to consider another free option.
CoffeeScript is another free alternative.

Verdict

Transcrypt is worth choosing for developers who want Python to be the source language for browser applications while retaining direct access to JavaScript libraries and browser functions. Its free Apache 2.0 plan and useful compile-time tools strengthen that case. If your project depends on Python's dynamic execution or libraries written in C or C++, look for a tool whose runtime and library model supports those needs instead.
