Overview

Founded in 1978, SNL is operated by the nonprofit, non-commercial association Store norske leksikon, established in 2014. Its main encyclopedia covers all topics and fields. Subject editors maintain assigned areas, contribute articles, and provide academic quality control, giving readers a defined editorial layer behind the coverage.

Anyone can read without registering. Readers with an account can submit article or change proposals, but an editor reviews them before publication. That process offers a way to suggest improvements without allowing unreviewed changes to appear immediately. The publisher also says AI-generated text may not be published in the encyclopedia.

Key features

Articles are available in Bokmål and Nynorsk, and many are linguistically adapted for school pupils. Editorial guidance calls for clear language, structured headings, definitions, fact boxes, and links to related material. Those features make SNL useful for learning and orientation, not just quick lookups. Articles combine text and images, include citation tools, and are updated daily.

The publisher provides an open API and metadata marked for free reuse, which can make SNL useful beyond its website for readers and projects that work with reference data. Its accessibility aim is to meet most WCAG 2.0 AAA requirements and all AA requirements, with errors addressed as they are found. One stated limitation is that some explanatory image captions are not adapted for screen readers, although the information in those images is also supplied as text in the relevant articles.

SNL says it collects de-identified, aggregated visitor statistics and uses Google Analytics on its website. General questions can be sent to redaksjonen@snl.no; the publisher says it responds as quickly as it can.

Pricing

SNL is free, with no trial required. The Free access plan is free and provides access to the freely accessible reference work. There is no paid tier to unlock coverage, so readers do not have to weigh a cheaper plan against a restricted one.

Platforms

SNL is available on the web and iOS, and offers an API. Its listed platform support is narrower than services that also offer Android apps, so Android users should expect to use the web version rather than a listed native app.

Who it's for

SNL suits Norwegian-speaking readers who want expert-authored coverage, especially pupils, students, teachers, and anyone who values subject-editor oversight. Its school-oriented language adaptations and structured article format support study, while citation tools and daily updates help with broader reference use. It is a weaker fit for readers seeking another language or those who need fully screen-reader-adapted explanatory image captions.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access covers the encyclopedia rather than reserving content for paid plans.
Pros: Subject editors review assigned areas, and reader proposals are reviewed before publication.
Pros: Bokmål and Nynorsk articles, school-focused language adaptations, and structured guidance make the work useful for learning.
Pros: Daily updates, citation tools, an open API, and metadata marked for free reuse serve both readers and reference-data projects.
Cons: The stated language coverage is Bokmål and Nynorsk, so it does not meet the needs of readers looking for reference material in other languages.
Cons: Some explanatory image captions are not adapted for screen readers, despite the accompanying text descriptions.
Cons: Android is not among its listed platforms.

Alternatives

If Norwegian-language expert editing is not your priority, Wikipedia is another free encyclopedia, with no advertising or paywalls and support for Android as well as iOS, web, and API access.

For a large reference collection on the web, Encyclopedia.com offers over 300,000 reference entries and more than 50,000 topic summaries for free. Readers seeking a bilingual resource can choose The Canadian Encyclopedia, a free online work in English and French.

Treccani is worth considering for readers who want an app as well as web access: it supports Android and iOS, and its Zero pubblicità option offers ad-free portal browsing across devices, with selectable duration and up to six months free. Readers comparing other free web references can also consider Infoplease, Te Ara – The Encyclopedia of New Zealand, or Baidu Baike. Credo Reference is a paid web-based alternative.

Verdict

Choose Store norske leksikon if you want a free, regularly updated Norwegian reference with subject-editor oversight and useful support for learners. Its strongest case is the combination of broad coverage and reviewed, expert-authored content. Look elsewhere if you need another language, an Android app, or image captions fully adapted for screen readers.
