Overview

SMSBOX covers campaign messaging as well as transactional work such as appointment confirmations, order updates and two-factor authentication. It also supports WhatsApp Business, voice calls and email-to-SMS, giving businesses several routes for customer and system messages without limiting the service to bulk text campaigns.

The service says it reaches more than 200 countries and has direct operator connections in Belgium and the Netherlands. That direct presence makes it especially relevant to organizations sending locally in those markets; reach elsewhere is broad, though no destination-specific rates are provided. SMS credits expire after one year, and messages longer than 160 GSM-7 or 70 Unicode characters count as multiple SMS, so character choice and message length affect usage.

Key features

The online dashboard supports Excel contact imports, personalization tags, scheduled sending and real-time result tracking. Dashboard access is free, with charges applying to messages. That is a sensible setup for teams managing campaigns manually, but free dashboard access should not be mistaken for free sending: arbitrary-number delivery starts at €0.06 per SMS.

The REST API supports inbound and outbound SMS, OTP verification, HLR number validation, voice messages, webhooks and delivery reports. These capabilities suit application-driven authentication, notifications and two-way workflows better than a basic one-way sender. More than 50 direct integrations and 6,000+ apps through Zapier are claimed; named connectors include WordPress, WooCommerce, Microsoft Teams and Azure/Entra ID.

JAAN says data is stored in Belgian data centers within the EU under GDPR, with a data processing agreement available on request. It also states a 99.99% uptime guarantee backed by redundant Belgian infrastructure, automatic failover and monitoring. Support is offered by phone, contact form and email. These are useful assurances for operational messaging, though customers with formal data-processing needs should arrange the agreement directly.

Pricing

SMSBOX is paid for regular sending, with no expiring trial period. An account comes with eight one-off test credits at no charge, but they can only be sent to the account holder’s verified number. That is enough to check a personal destination, not to run a team pilot across customer numbers.

The 250 Starter credits option costs 24.75 EUR per once, or €0.099 per credit, and credits remain valid for one year. It covers usage-based SMS, voice and WhatsApp, making it the clearest entry point for modest or irregular volumes. It is not a monthly allotment, and credits expire if unused after the validity period.

For US and Canadian SMS, the Toll-Free Number US/Canada (+1) costs 5.00 EUR per month, with a three-month minimum; prices exclude 21% VAT. The number is required for SMS to the US, so this is an added recurring cost rather than an alternative to message credits.

The Virtual NL number and Virtual BE number each cost 25.00 EUR per month, with a three-month minimum and 21% VAT excluded. Both support sending and receiving local SMS traffic; receiving is free up to 1,000 SMS per month, then costs 0.15 credit per message. These fit businesses needing a local two-way number, but the local-traffic restriction and minimum term make them less suitable for short campaigns.

SIM services are priced per SIM card and require a 12-month minimum; prices exclude 21% VAT. SIM/MFA hosting is 33.25 EUR per month for receiving only, with incoming SMS in the dashboard or by webhook. SIM hosting — receiving is 41.58 EUR per month, also receiving-only, for M2M or business communication. SIM hosting — receiving + sending is 74.92 EUR per month for two-way communication, with each sent SMS using 0.25 credit. The lower-cost SIM plans are unsuitable when replies or outbound messages are needed; the sending tier adds that capability but still has a per-message credit cost.

Platforms

SMSBOX is available through a web dashboard and API, with Windows also listed as a platform. The API and dashboard cover different working styles: developers can build messaging into applications, while staff can manage contacts and campaigns directly.

Who it's for

SMSBOX is a strong fit for businesses that need transactional SMS, inbound replies, delivery reporting or OTP verification, particularly when they also want voice or WhatsApp Business messaging. Its local Belgian and Dutch operator connections, integrations and receiving-number options also suit businesses with established workflows in those markets. It is a weaker fit for consumers, teams seeking free ongoing sends, or organizations that need flexible month-to-month number hosting.

Pros and cons

Pro: Dashboard and REST API support both managed campaigns and software-driven workflows, including inbound messages and delivery reports.
Pro: SMS, OTP, voice, WhatsApp Business and email-to-SMS give operational teams multiple messaging channels.
Pro: The eight test credits let a new account check delivery to its own verified number without a trial clock.
Con: Test credits cannot be sent to arbitrary numbers, so they do not support a genuine customer-recipient pilot.
Con: Credits expire after one year, and long or Unicode messages can consume multiple credits through SMS segmentation.
Con: Number and SIM options carry three- or twelve-month minimum terms, with VAT excluded from quoted prices.

Alternatives

For other options, see SMS Gateway Software. Choose Android SMS Gateway if a freemium option with an Android device route and a stated 300-SMS lifetime free tier is a better fit. OpenVox SMS Gateway is worth considering when a free Linux or self-hosted gateway matters. simhook offers a free self-hosted option as well as a capped free tier for those who prefer a phone-based setup. Telerivet may suit teams wanting a free tier with 50 messages per day and two automated services, or a defined paid Starter plan.

Bird Verify is an alternative when verification is the focus: its Verify plan has no separate verification fee, though channel message charges apply. Clickatell SMS API is another paid API option with pay-as-you-go outgoing messages whose prices vary by destination and message type. Smstools is worth comparing for U.S. messaging when a per-message, no-subscription option is preferable; its listed U.S. rate starts at €0.025 per message, with volume discounts. BulkGate is another pay-as-you-go option to compare for UK sends, with a listed €0.0301 per SMS rate excluding VAT and country-dependent pricing.

Verdict

SMSBOX is a good choice for businesses that need API-backed, two-way messaging alongside a usable campaign dashboard and several message types. Its strongest case is the breadth of operational features, backed by local Belgian infrastructure and integration options. Look elsewhere if you need a broad free trial, flexible short-term number hosting or a simple service with no credit-expiry and segmentation considerations.
