Overview

SketchUp’s clearest advantage is a path from free browser-based modeling to paid plans for desktop design and focused workflows such as scan-to-3D or construction. The 3D Warehouse’s millions of pre-built models and materials can speed up project work, and more than 600 Extension Warehouse extensions offer ways to automate or extend workflows. Those resources broaden the tool, but do not remove the need to match a plan to your platform and intended use.

SketchUp is part of Trimble, which was founded in 2000 and is based in Westminster, Colorado. Trimble says more than one million industry professionals use SketchUp.

Key features

Modeling and visualization: SketchUp supports parametric modeling and animation tools, with render-engine options. Studio adds photorealistic visuals, rendered animations, and 360-degree panoramas, making it the strongest fit among these plans for those visualization workflows. Its advanced visualization is limited to Windows.
Models and extensions: The large 3D Warehouse library and 600-plus Extension Warehouse add-ons give designers a broad base of reusable assets and workflow extensions. That is valuable for users whose projects benefit from existing models or automation, though an extension-based workflow may require selecting and managing tools beyond the core app.
Sharing: Trimble Connect supports secure sharing, real-time viewing and commenting, and collaboration. Team administrators can add or remove users and assign or remove licenses; large teams can also use volume pricing, SSO/Federation, standardized renewals, and user-management tools.
Learning and education: Free self-paced training is available through SketchUp Campus, alongside YouTube and a community forum. SketchUp for Schools is free for eligible Google Workspace for Education or Microsoft Education accounts, works on Chromebooks or any internet-connected computer, and includes lesson plans, 3D printing, community support, and cloud storage through Google Drive or OneDrive.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides SketchUp for Web, Trimble Connect cloud storage, and 3D Warehouse access. It is explicitly not for commercial use, so it is a starting point for personal or noncommercial projects rather than paid work.

Go Annual — 10.75 USD per month (billed annually): SketchUp for Web and iPad, unlimited project cloud storage, and Photoreal Materials. Choose it for essential 3D design without desktop modeling; it gives up the desktop modeler and LayOut documentation in Pro.
Pro Annual — 33.25 USD per month (billed annually): A desktop 3D modeler, LayOut 2D documentation, PreDesign, and Extension Warehouse access. This is the better fit for professional design that needs desktop work and documentation, at a substantial increase over Go.
Studio Annual — 71.58 USD per month (billed annually): Windows-only advanced workflows, Revit importer, point-cloud modeling, photorealistic visuals, rendered animations, and 360-degree panoramas. It suits visualization and BIM workflows that justify the higher price and Windows requirement.
Pro Scan Annual — 41.58 USD per month (billed annually): Windows-only scan-to-3D workflow, Scan Essentials, and point-cloud import. Pick it for scan-based modeling rather than Studio’s visualization emphasis.
Pro Civil Contractor Annual — 41.58 USD per month (billed annually): 3D-to-field workflows, Trimble Site Contractor integration, and field-data import. It is aimed at stakeout and excavation workflows.
Pro Advanced Workflows Annual — 49.92 USD per month (billed annually): Windows-only interoperable workflows with Scan Essentials and a Revit importer. It fits users needing those integrations, but is not the web-and-iPad route offered by Go.

Annual subscriptions and monthly plans are available, and subscriptions generally auto-renew for an equal term. Annual refunds are available within 14 days; monthly refunds within 7 days of initial purchase. The homepage offers a trial, but its duration and terms are not established here, so check them before relying on a trial period.

Platforms

SketchUp is available on iOS, web, and Windows. Go combines web and iPad access, while Pro adds desktop modeling; Studio and several specialist workflows are Windows-only. That makes SketchUp less suitable if your required advanced workflow depends on a platform outside Windows.

Who it's for

SketchUp suits designers who want to begin in a browser, iPad users seeking essential 3D design, and professionals who need desktop modeling, 2D documentation, or specialized scan and construction workflows. Schools with eligible education accounts also have a no-cost option. It is a poor choice for commercial work on the free tier, or for users who need Studio’s advanced workflows on a non-Windows platform.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free browser access and paid web/iPad and desktop tiers provide distinct entry points for different budgets and workflows.
Pro: Millions of library models, 600-plus extensions, and Trimble Connect collaboration can support asset reuse and team review.
Pro: The specialist plans target scan-to-3D, civil contractor, and interoperable workflows rather than forcing every user into one bundle.
Con: Free is not for commercial use, making a paid plan necessary for commercial projects.
Con: Studio and several advanced workflows are Windows-only, excluding users who need those tools on other platforms.
Con: Annual billing and automatic renewal require attention to commitment and refund windows, particularly when comparing monthly and annual terms.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse 3D modeling software.

Blender is a free, open-source 3D creation suite for Linux, macOS, and Windows that can be downloaded without registration and used offline; choose it if those terms matter more than SketchUp’s plan-specific workflows.
Houdini is a freemium option for Windows, macOS, and Linux; consider it if you want to compare another cross-platform tool.
Onshape offers a free plan for non-commercial use with publicly accessible documents, and supports Android, iOS, and web; choose it if those access terms fit your work.
Rhino 3D is a paid option with a free plan and trial for Windows and macOS; consider it if you want to compare that platform and licensing route.
ZBrush has a free iPad plan with 28 brushes and a subscription option; consider it if that iPad plan is the relevant starting point.
Shapr3D offers a free Basic plan limited to 2 projects and a Pro plan at 299.00 USD per year; choose it if those project and price terms suit your needs.
Bforartists is a free, open-source 3D creation suite for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
MeshLab is a free, open-source mesh processing and editing system for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Verdict

Choose SketchUp if you want a flexible route from browser-based design to professional desktop, documentation, or specialist workflows, backed by a large model library and collaboration tools. The main reason to look elsewhere is platform or plan fit: commercial work requires a paid tier, and advanced visualization and several specialized workflows are Windows-only.
