Overview

SurveyMonkey is a survey platform for creating questionnaires, collecting responses and analyzing results. It is best suited to individuals and organizations that need branching, branded surveys or access to a broad respondent panel. The free tier is useful for short surveys, but response caps and paid-plan overages make volume a key buying consideration.

Key features

Logic branching lets survey creators adapt what respondents see, while custom branding helps align surveys with an organization’s identity. More than 400 templates are offered on the homepage, with 500+ expert templates in feature details; that breadth can give common projects a starting point, though the free plan’s 10-question ceiling limits how far a survey can develop.

Response analytics support reviewing collected answers. The platform states a general limit of 1,000 responses per month, while individual plans set different quotas and free responses are limited. SurveyMonkey Audience offers access to a stated reach of more than 335 million people across 130+ countries, a useful option when an organization needs respondents beyond its own contacts. Payments can be accepted through Stripe or PayPal.

Free iOS and Android apps support creating surveys and checking the latest results. Each user can register up to two devices at a time. API access is available for connecting survey workflows to other software. Team plans add shared assets, roles, permissions and consolidated billing, while Enterprise adds enhanced governance and security, SSO and regional data centers. Enterprise also includes Zoom integration.

Pricing

SurveyMonkey uses a freemium model. Basic is free for simple surveys, forms and quizzes, with unlimited surveys but only 10 questions per survey and limited responses. That suits brief, low-volume work, not ongoing collection where predictable capacity matters.

Standard Monthly includes 1,000 responses per month; its price is not published. Advantage Annual costs 39.00 USD per year, billed $468 billed annually, and includes 15,000 responses per year. Premier Annual costs 139.00 USD per year, billed $1,668 billed annually, and includes 40,000 responses per year. These annual plans provide defined response allowances, but exceedance charges and auto-renewal terms should be considered before subscribing.

Team Advantage costs 30.00 USD per year, billed annually, starting at 3 users, and includes 50,000 responses per year. Team Premier costs 92.00 USD per year, billed annually, starting at 3 users, and includes 100,000 responses per year. Both include team collaboration features and charge ₹5.00 for each response beyond the response limit. The Team Premier tier adds phone support; it is the stronger fit for teams needing more response capacity and that support channel. Enterprise requires 5+ users, has custom pricing and a custom response limit; it is aimed at organizations prioritizing governance, security and integrations.

Paid plans renew automatically by default, though auto-renew can be turned off. At the end of the billing cycle, doing so downgrades the account to the free plan. Check the response allowance and overage charge against expected volume before choosing a plan.

Platforms

SurveyMonkey supports Android, iOS and API access. Its free mobile apps support survey creation and checking recent results, while the two-device registration limit per user may matter to people switching among devices.

Who it's for

SurveyMonkey is a strong fit for individuals starting with short surveys and for teams that need structured collaboration, branching, branding or a large external respondent pool. It is less suited to users who need unrestricted free response collection or predictable high-volume costs without monitoring quotas and overages.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited surveys on the free plan make it possible to run multiple small projects without a subscription.
Pros: Audience reaches more than 335 million people across 130+ countries, giving survey owners a route beyond their existing contacts.
Pros: Team plans combine shared assets, permissions and consolidated billing, useful for coordinated survey work.
Cons: Free surveys stop at 10 questions and have limited responses, restricting longer or higher-volume projects.
Cons: Paid responses beyond the limit cost ₹5.00 each, so unexpectedly high participation can raise costs.
Cons: Team plans start at 3 users, and Enterprise requires 5+ users, which may not suit solo buyers seeking team-tier administration.

Alternatives

For different software needs, Software Manager is free and runs on Linux, while App Manager is free and runs on Android. Foundant CommunitySuite is a paid API and web option with pricing provided after contacting the maker. Kaleidoscope is a paid web option with a Starter plan that includes eligibility criteria, a public marketplace, an assigned implementation specialist and customer success manager, support by email, chat and phone, and application form skip logic. AmpliFund, CATALYST, CommunityForce and Electronic Form Solutions are paid web-based alternatives.

Verdict

Choose SurveyMonkey if you need a capable survey workflow that can scale from short free questionnaires to team administration, respondent-panel reach and enterprise controls. Its main advantage is that range; its main caution is cost discipline, since response caps and ₹5.00 overages make plan selection consequential. Look elsewhere if free use must support longer surveys or substantial response volumes without limits.
