Overview

Trinka combines grammar correction, style suggestions, tone detection and consistency checks with paraphrasing, AI-assisted writing, citation and plagiarism tools, and a journal finder. That breadth can support several stages of a scholarly or technical writing workflow, rather than only catching grammatical errors.

Trinka Cloud checks English and Spanish with automatic language detection. Writers can upload an MS Word document for automated proofreading and download the edited file. The browser plugin works with Google Docs, Authorea, Evernote and Medium. Trinka also offers API, extension, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows access, giving it more deployment options than a browser-only tool.

Key features

Language and writing assistance

Grammar checks, style suggestions and tone detection address different parts of revision, while consistency checks can help maintain uniform wording across a document. Paraphrasing and AI writing requests add further ways to rework text. The English-and-Spanish coverage is useful for those languages, but two supported languages will not suit multilingual writers working beyond them.

Document and research workflow

MS Word upload, automated proofreading and edited-file download make Trinka practical for writers who revise complete documents rather than text in a browser field. Citation and plagiarism tools and a journal finder extend its focus into research writing. Institution plans also list LMS and SSO integrations with Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and D2L, which is relevant to organizations already using those systems.

Privacy and security

Trinka says data is encrypted in transit and at rest and is not sold, monetized or shared with third parties. It states that paid-plan data is not used to train AI models; data on the Confidential Data Plan is deleted immediately after processing. The Trust Center states SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001:2022 certification and compliance with HIPAA, FERPA and GDPR. Those commitments are especially pertinent for institutions and teams handling sensitive work, though the Confidential Data option carries a much higher stated price than the individual monthly plan.

Pricing

Trinka is freemium, with a free Basic plan and paid plans starting at 20.00 USD per month. There is no free trial, so the Basic plan is the route to try the service without a subscription.

Basic: Custom pricing. It does not expire, but usage is capped monthly at 5,000 words, 5 AI writing requests, 4 credits and 1 free plagiarism score. Usage is measured by month from registration. This is a limited way to assess the workflow, not an ample allowance for frequent document work.
Premium: 20.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes up to 120 proofread files per year, 25 AI writing requests per month, 10 credits per month and 2 free plagiarism scores per month. The monthly billing and file allowance make it the clearest fit for an individual with regular but bounded proofreading needs.
Premium Plus: Custom pricing. It raises the allowances to 240 proofread files per year, 1,000 AI writing requests per month, 20 credits per month and 240 pages per year. The larger quotas suit heavier use, but the price needs to be weighed against expected volume.
Confidential Data: 300.00 USD per year, with annual billing. It allows up to 600 proofread files per year, 1,000 pages per year, 3,000 AI writing requests per month and 600 citations per year. Trinka describes it for teams of five or more handling sensitive, regulated or proprietary content; it is not the economical choice for a solo writer.

Platforms

Trinka is available on web, macOS and Windows, as well as through an extension, API and self-hosted deployment. The browser extension supports Google Docs, Authorea, Evernote and Medium. The combination of desktop, browser and self-hosted options gives individuals and organizations several ways to fit it into their writing setup.

Who it's for

Researchers, academic writers and technical professionals are the natural audience: the tool combines formal-language checks with document proofreading, citations, plagiarism checks and journal discovery. Institutions may also value the LMS and SSO integrations. Writers who need broad language coverage, or who mainly want a general-purpose assistant, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Combines writing checks with citations, plagiarism checks and journal finding, supporting more of a research-writing workflow than grammar correction alone.
Pro: MS Word proofreading includes an edited-file download, a practical fit for document-based revision.
Pro: English and Spanish checking, plus integrations and multiple deployment options, gives writers and institutions flexibility.
Pro: Paid-plan model-training limits and immediate deletion for Confidential Data processing address concerns around sensitive documents.
Con: Language checking covers only English and Spanish, limiting its use for other language pairs.
Con: Basic has monthly word and request caps, while higher-volume Premium Plus has custom pricing; budgeting becomes harder as needs grow.
Con: Confidential Data costs 300.00 USD per year and is positioned for teams of five or more, making it disproportionate for most individuals.

Alternatives

Choose Grammarly instead if its Android and iOS platforms and 100 monthly AI prompts on the free plan are a better match; its Pro plan is 12.00 USD per month for 2,000 AI prompts per member per month, below Trinka Premium's monthly price but without Trinka's stated research-specific tool mix.

Sapling is worth considering when its API, extension, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms suit your setup; its free plan includes AI detector checks, files and snippets, rather than Trinka's academic proofreading emphasis.

For a tool centered on AI detection, consider GPTZero, whose free plan includes 10,000 words per month, 50,000 characters and free AI detection. Heynotai is another detection-focused option, with a free Check plan covering 100 tokens per month and sentence-level highlights.

If you want paraphrasing and grammar alongside AI detection, IA Checker offers those functions on its free plan. Originality.ai may suit readers seeking a no-subscription AI detection option: its Basic plan includes three scans per day, up to 2,000 words per scan, and DOCX, PDF and DOC uploads.

TraceGPT and Undetectable AI are alternatives to consider for their respective detection-focused offerings.

Verdict

Trinka is a strong choice for academic and technical writers who want document proofreading alongside research-oriented writing tools, and for institutions that need LMS or SSO integrations. Its security commitments and specialized workflow are persuasive advantages. Look elsewhere if you need more than English and Spanish, broad everyday writing support, or high usage at a predictable low price.
