Overview

Rolldown is designed to power Vite 8 and later, and its makers recommend using it through Vite for most applications. Library authors are pointed to tsdown instead. That guidance makes Rolldown most relevant to developers choosing or building within the Vite toolchain, rather than teams seeking a general-purpose standalone bundler by default.

The project is free and open source under the MIT license. VoidZero Inc. holds the copyrights, funds development and controls its direction. An online REPL offers a way to explore the bundler in a browser, while GitHub, Discord and contribution resources provide routes into the project community.

Key features

Rolldown provides a Rollup-compatible API, with a plugin API described as identical to Rollup's. Most existing Rollup plugins can be reused, which gives teams with established plugin setups a practical migration path; it does not guarantee every plugin will work unchanged. Community plugins published to npm appear in the Vite Plugin Registry.

Built-in TypeScript, JSX and syntax-lowering transforms, powered by Oxc, cover common compilation work without requiring separate transform plugins for those tasks. Other built-ins include module resolution, ESM/CJS interop, define and inject options, and minification. Mixed ESM and CommonJS module graphs work without requiring @rollup/plugin-commonjs. Tree shaking and source maps are also supported, and configurable manual code splitting gives developers control over chunk organization.

Module types are experimental, so they are a poor foundation for production workflows that depend on stable behavior. Rolldown's JavaScript APIs support bundling, watching and building, but the build() API is experimental and may change in patch releases; projects that call it directly must be prepared to track API changes.

Pricing

Free & open source — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan provides the bundler with no paid tiers stated. The MIT-licensed project is suited to individual developers and teams evaluating or using Rolldown without a software subscription. There are no plan tiers to compare, though direct use of the experimental build() API brings a stability trade-off rather than a pricing one.

Platforms

Rolldown offers install commands for npm, pnpm, yarn, bun and vp. Prebuilt binaries are listed for Linux, Windows and Apple macOS architectures, with additional targets including Android, FreeBSD, OpenHarmony and Wasm/Wasi variants. Where a prebuilt binary is not distributed, users can use the Wasm build or compile from source. The guide also links to the online REPL for browser-based exploration.

Windows file-system access can slow builds, especially when transforms run without plugins, so Windows users with that workflow should account for a potential performance drawback. Direct eval also warrants care: bundled code using it may access variables from other files, creating a security issue if those variables contain sensitive data.

Who it's for

Rolldown is a strong candidate for Vite-focused developers and teams that value a Rollup-compatible plugin API alongside built-in TypeScript, JSX and syntax-lowering transforms. Its manual code-splitting controls and mixed-module support also suit projects that need those bundling capabilities without adding a separate CommonJS plugin.

For most applications, following the maker's recommendation and using Rolldown through Vite is the clearer route. Library authors should consider tsdown, while developers who require a settled direct build API or production-ready experimental module types should be cautious about adopting those parts of Rolldown.

Pros and cons

Pros: Rollup-compatible API and plugin interface let many existing Rollup plugins carry over, reducing the need to rebuild a plugin-based setup.
Pros: Built-in TypeScript, JSX and syntax lowering, plus ESM/CJS interop, cover several common bundling needs without separate plugins.
Pros: Free, open-source MIT licensing and multiple package-manager install options make it accessible without a paid plan.
Cons: Experimental module types and a build() API that can change in patch releases make those direct-use areas a risk for stability-sensitive projects.
Cons: Windows file-system access may slow builds, particularly when transforms run without plugins.
Cons: Direct eval can expose variables across files in a bundle, which can create a security issue when sensitive values are involved.

Alternatives

Choose JavaScript Build Tools to compare more tools in the category. esbuild is another free option, with a native executable or WebAssembly version under the MIT license. Parcel is a free, open-source project supported by code and financial contributions from companies and individuals. SWC is a free, open-source Rust-based developer toolchain. Rspack is a free and open-source MIT-licensed option.

Vite is the natural alternative for application teams following Rolldown's recommended Vite-based route: it is free, open source and MIT licensed. Oxc is a free and open-source alternative in the same toolchain family that powers Rolldown's built-in transforms. webpack is a free, MIT-licensed self-managed option. Google Closure Compiler is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Rolldown is best for developers working in Vite or carrying a Rollup plugin setup who want built-in transforms and configurable bundling without a license cost. Its compatibility and built-in capabilities are the main reasons to choose it; its experimental module types and changeable direct build() API are reasons to prefer the Vite route or another tool when interface stability is essential.
