Overview

Removal.AI is an automatic image-background remover with a browser editor, batch tools, desktop apps, and an API. It is best suited to people handling recurring cutouts across different workflows, from ecommerce catalogs to developer integrations. The free tier is useful for small personal jobs, but its low resolution and noncommercial restriction make it a poor fit for finished business work.

Key features

The service can produce transparent, white, or customized backgrounds in three seconds or less. Its online editor adds text and effects, lets users change backgrounds, and includes a manual background eraser for foreground adjustments. That combination covers routine cutouts and some finishing work without requiring a separate editor, though the free plan’s output cap limits where it can be used.

Bulk Upload accepts up to 100 images in one upload and charges half the credits per image. Removal.AI also says it can process more than 1,000 images in a single upload. The desktop app for macOS and Windows can process whole folders, apply background colors, pause and resume, optimize for ecommerce, and crop automatically. These are useful options for repeat catalog work; occasional users are less likely to benefit from a desktop workflow.

The API accepts direct uploads or image URLs and returns either a file URL or Base64 output, at resolutions up to 25 megapixels. Documentation includes examples in Python, PHP, C#, JavaScript, and Nodejs. New API users receive 10 free preview credits per month by default; the documented theoretical rate reaches 500 images per minute, depending on resolution and internet speed. A Figma plugin offers another route for incorporating background removal into design work.

JPG and PNG uploads can be up to 12 MB. Images over 36 megapixels are resized to that maximum resolution. Removal.AI says file storage is 100% GDPR-compliant and guarantees 99% uptime. Support is English-only, with replies to contact messages within 24 hours.

Pricing

The free plan is free and allows 0.25-megapixel output for personal use. It is suitable for low-resolution personal edits, not commercial assets or higher-resolution exports. The separate API preview allowance is 10 credits per month for new API users.

Pay-once lifetime credit packs are priced at 1.89 USD per month for 3 credits, 8.99 USD per month for 25 credits, 45.99 USD per month for 150 credits, 95.99 USD per month for 350 credits, and 189.99 USD per month for 800 credits. Despite the monthly price presentation, each is billed Pay Only Once; credits remain usable for three years. The smallest packs suit infrequent paid jobs, while larger packs provide more credits upfront without a monthly renewal.

Monthly plans cost 5.99 USD per month for 100 credits, 25.99 USD per month for 450 credits, 63.99 USD per month for 1,150 credits, or 120.90 USD per month for 2,800 credits. Unused credits roll over up to five times the monthly budget, which gives regular users room to carry credits between uneven workloads. Subscriptions have a 14-day money-back guarantee, limited to 50 downloads.

Platforms

Removal.AI runs on the web and offers desktop apps for macOS and Windows, an API, and a Figma plugin. The desktop tools suit folder-based jobs, while the API is aimed at integrating background removal into software workflows.

Who it's for

Individuals can use the free tier for small personal edits. Photographers and marketers may value the editor and batch tools, while ecommerce users get folder processing, automatic cropping, and ecommerce optimization. Developers have API access and multiple language examples; enterprises are among the product’s stated audiences, though the listed options also accommodate smaller workloads.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple workflows—browser editor, bulk upload, desktop, API, and Figma plugin—make it adaptable to both individual edits and production pipelines.
Pro: Bulk Upload accepts 100 images and uses half the credits per image, helping reduce the cost of batch jobs.
Pro: Lifetime packs avoid monthly renewal, and credits last three years.
Con: The free plan is capped at 0.25 megapixels and personal use, so it cannot serve as a commercial high-resolution tier.
Con: Support is available only in English, which may be a drawback for users who need help in another language.

Verdict

Removal.AI is a strong fit for ecommerce operators, creatives, and developers who need background removal across batches, folders, or an API rather than a one-off edit. Its range of workflows and credit choices is the main reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a commercially usable free plan, higher-resolution free output, or support in a language other than English.
