Overview

ZeroTier can connect public clouds, private data centers, on-premises environments, remote devices and edge systems within virtual networks. Support for both Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking makes it relevant to varied network designs, while identity-based access control and programmable management give administrators ways to shape access and operations across those environments.

Its security model combines cryptographic device identity and end-to-end traffic encryption, using peer-to-peer connections when possible. Centrally defined policy is enforced globally, a useful approach for distributed deployments that need consistent controls. The maker also lists SOC 2 Type II, FIPS 140-3 and GDPR trust badges. ZeroTier Quantum adds post-quantum networking based on the CNSA 2.0 algorithm suite and can be deployed in fully air-gapped environments, with local policy enforcement and keys generated and held by endpoints. That offering is aimed at high-security, sovereign and mission-critical use, rather than ordinary small networks.

Key features

ZeroTier supports cloud-to-cloud networking and global device fleets, with VPN and firewall policy management and infrastructure-as-code support. It covers DigitalOcean, Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Engine, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Alibaba Cloud, IBM Cloud, Vultr and Equinix Metal. Documentation includes API guides and tutorials for Docker, code-server, Terraform, webhooks and Prometheus/Grafana monitoring. Those integrations can support automation and external monitoring workflows, but network monitoring itself is not a platform capability.

Pricing

ZeroTier uses a freemium model. Personal has no published price and is limited to non-commercial use, 10 devices, one network and one network admin. It suits an individual or small personal network, but not commercial deployments or larger fleets.

Essential costs 18.00 USD per month, billed per month. It includes 10 devices, then charges $2.00 each, plus 10 networks, five admins, API and AI agent access, OIDC SSO and 30-day audit logs. This is the entry paid tier for smaller teams needing commercial use and those administrative features, though its included device count is modest.

Scale costs 179.00 USD per month, billed per month. It raises the included device allowance to 100, charges $1.80 for each additional device, and includes unlimited networks, 10 admins, custom flow rules and ticketed support with an SLA. The larger allowance and network capacity suit growing deployments; the higher base price makes it a substantial step up from Essential.

Enterprise has custom pricing and starts at 500+ devices, with unlimited networks and admins and 90-day audit logs. It is suited to large deployments that need that scale and capacity. Quantum also has custom pricing and is positioned for post-quantum networking in high-security, sovereign and mission-critical environments.

Support rises with the paid tiers: Essential includes community support, Scale adds ticketed support with an SLA, and Enterprise provides priority support with an enhanced SLA. Personal also includes community support. Monthly billing is explicit for Essential and Scale; the plan terms do not state a renewal schedule.

Platforms

ZeroTier supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as API, web and self-hosted access. Its hybrid deployment model and multicloud support suit organizations combining hosted and self-managed environments.

Who it's for

ZeroTier is a strong fit for organizations connecting cloud, on-premises and edge infrastructure under centrally managed policies, especially when they need both VPN and firewall policy management or programmable networking. Personal is appropriate only for non-commercial use within its 10-device, one-network limit. Buyers needing extensive device capacity, more administrators or stronger support should consider the paid tiers and their per-device charges. Those needing network monitoring as a built-in capability should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Broad hybrid reach: overlays span public cloud, private data centers, on-premises and edge environments, with support for nine named cloud providers.
Centralized security controls: device identity, end-to-end encryption and globally enforced policy provide a consistent foundation across distributed networks.
Meaningful entry limits: Personal is non-commercial and capped at 10 devices, while Essential charges for each device beyond its included 10.
Costs rise with capacity: additional devices are billed per device on Essential and Scale, so fleet growth adds to the monthly bill.
No native network monitoring: monitoring workflows may require the documented Prometheus/Grafana integration rather than a built-in capability.

Alternatives

For business VPN needs, compare Business VPN Software; for cloud network administration, see Cloud Network Management Software.

Cloudflare Access is a freemium alternative with a free plan under 50 users and a $7.00 per month Pay-as-you-go plan; consider it if that user-based entry point suits your needs better than ZeroTier's device-based limits.
Tailscale offers a free Personal plan for up to six users with unlimited user devices; consider it if that free user-and-device allowance fits better than ZeroTier Personal's 10-device cap.
Cilium is free, open source software for Linux; consider it if you need that platform scope rather than ZeroTier's broad device and cloud coverage.
Infoblox Cloud Network Automation uses token-based licensing with custom pricing.
EfficientIP SOLIDserver DDI is a paid option offered through hardware and virtual appliances.
F5 BIG-IP APM is a paid alternative with a free trial and perpetual licensing.
NetBox is a freemium alternative with hosted plans.
OpenStack Neutron is a free option for Linux and self-hosted environments.

Verdict

Choose ZeroTier if you need centrally governed virtual networking across cloud, on-premises and edge systems, with security controls and flexible network management. Its broad reach is the main reason to choose it; the device caps, additional-device charges and lack of built-in network monitoring are the main reasons to look elsewhere.
