Overview

Proton Mail is a privacy-focused email service for people who want encryption across everyday correspondence without ads in the inbox. It suits individuals who value privacy and teams that need business email or custom domains, though the free account’s storage ceiling makes it a limited long-term home for a large mailbox.

Its combination of encryption, tracker blocking and familiar organization tools is compelling; the trade-off is that more storage, addresses and domains require a paid plan whose published price is custom pricing.

Key features

End-to-end and zero-access encryption are the central reason to choose Proton Mail. The service also includes an encrypted calendar, and Proton says its apps are open source and independently audited. Tracker blocking helps limit email-based monitoring, while phishing and spam protection, password-protected messages and link confirmation add useful safeguards. These protections make the service a stronger fit for privacy-conscious communication than someone choosing solely for mailbox capacity.

The inbox is ad-free and supports scheduling, undoing and snoozing messages, along with folders, labels and categories. Easy Switch imports email, calendars and contacts from Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, Apple and other providers, reducing the friction of moving an existing account. Paid plans can connect external email clients through IMAP and SMTP using Proton Mail Bridge; free users should not assume the same client flexibility.

The attachment limit is 25 MB. That is a practical constraint for people who routinely send large files. Proton Mail supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, so it covers desktop and mobile use across the listed platforms.

Pricing

Proton Mail is freemium. The free plans cost 0.00 USD per free and provide one encrypted email address, one user and 1 GB of storage, with no credit card required on Proton Free. The free tier has the same security level as paid plans, which makes it a credible way to use Proton’s core privacy protections. Its small mailbox allowance is the main compromise: the FAQ says storage starts at 500 MB, while the plan states 1 GB, so users should check the current allowance before relying on it for an archive.

Mail Plus has custom pricing and includes 15 GB storage, 10 extra email addresses, one custom email domain, 10 hide-my-email aliases, and unlimited folders and labels. Priority customer support is included. It is the more focused upgrade for an individual who needs a custom domain, more addresses or more room without the larger bundle.

Proton Unlimited also has custom pricing. It includes 500 GB storage, 15 extra email addresses, three custom domains, unlimited hide-my-email aliases and dedicated customer support. This is the stronger fit for heavier mail use or several domain needs; someone who only needs one inbox may be paying for capacity and options they will not use. Both paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. The desktop app has a 14-day free trial.

The stated paid starting point is 3.99 /user/mo, while plan-specific prices are custom pricing. Paid subscriptions support the free plan. The Proton Family plan supports up to five additional members and 3 TB total storage, making it relevant to households sharing a plan rather than a solo account.

Platforms

Proton Mail is available on the web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Broad platform coverage makes it a viable choice for mixed-device households and workplaces. Bridge-based IMAP and SMTP access on paid plans gives users a route to external email clients, but it is not a stated feature of the free tier.

Who it's for

Choose Proton Mail if encryption, tracker protection and an ad-free inbox matter more than maximizing free storage. Mail Plus suits people who need a custom domain and extra addresses; Proton Unlimited is better for larger storage needs, multiple domains or dedicated support. Businesses may also consider it for business email and custom domains; Proton says it secures more than 100,000 businesses. The maker, Proton AG, is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and reports more than 100 million accounts.

Look elsewhere if your main priority is a generous free mailbox, particularly if you need substantially more than 1 GB without paying. The 25 MB attachment cap also makes Proton Mail less suitable for frequent large-file emailing.

Pros and cons

Pros: End-to-end and zero-access encryption, tracker blocking and an encrypted calendar give privacy-conscious users a strong core feature set.
Pros: Open-source apps and independent audits support transparency around the service’s security approach.
Pros: Mail Plus and Unlimited offer custom domains and more addresses, while the family plan supports up to five additional members and 3 TB total storage.
Cons: The free plan’s 1 GB storage and single address are restrictive for a long-term mailbox or anyone moving a large archive.
Cons: Paid plans have custom pricing, so comparing their cost requires checking the current offer; the stated starting price is 3.99 /user/mo.
Cons: The 25 MB attachment limit may frustrate users who regularly send large files.

Alternatives

Choose Zoho Mail instead if you need a free plan for a small team: its free tier supports five users, one domain and 5 GB of mail storage per user. Gmail is a better fit if you prefer a free account with 15 GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos rather than Proton’s 1 GB mailbox allowance. Pick Outlook.com if its free plan’s 15 GB mailbox is a better match for your storage needs.

iCloud Mail is an alternative with 5 GB of storage shared with other iCloud data and access through Apple devices and iCloud.com. eclipso Mail Europe is another freemium email option. Consider mail.ch if its FreeMail allowance of 1 GB, one alias, 50 emails per day and 60 MB attachments better suits your requirements. WEB.DE Mail offers a free plan with 1 GB email storage, up to 20 MB attachments, 4 GB online storage and two email addresses. Yahoo Mail is another freemium alternative, with a Standard plan offering 20 GB mailbox storage and inbox organization tools.

Verdict

Proton Mail is a strong choice for people who want encrypted, ad-free email with useful privacy protections across desktop and mobile platforms. Its main reason to choose it is the combination of end-to-end and zero-access encryption with tracker blocking and practical inbox tools. Its main reason to look elsewhere is the tight free storage allowance, alongside custom pricing for the upgrades that ease that limit.
