Overview

Privoxy combines web proxying with controls for modifying HTTP headers and pages, restricting access, and removing ads and other unwanted content. It can run for multiple clients or as a LAN gateway, which makes it useful beyond a single desktop. Because it does not cache traffic, choose it for filtering and control, not caching.

Its reach stops at HTTP and HTTPS proxying; it does not handle FTP, SMTP, instant messaging, IRC, or ICQ. Privoxy is not designed to remove malware, and its default configuration does not try to filter it. Those boundaries matter if you need broad protocol coverage or threat protection.

Key features

Configurable page filtering: Rules can replace text, remove banners and web bugs, and filter HTML annoyances. That gives users more control over browsing than a narrow removal rule, but it also rewards people willing to tune their setup.
HTTPS inspection: Privoxy can filter HTTPS requests and responses as well as HTTP traffic, extending its controls to encrypted web connections.
Browser-based controls: An integrated configuration utility provides rule tracing and remote toggling. These controls help users inspect and adjust behavior without relying solely on configuration files.
Proxy chaining: Privoxy can be chained with other proxies, making it a candidate for setups that already use proxy layers.

Pricing

Privoxy free software: 0.00 USD per free. The software is free to use, copy, modify, or distribute, with no registration. It is GNU GPL version 2 or later software and comes with no warranty. There is no paid tier to trade against; the cost is the configuration effort and the need to assess how you obtain its binaries.

A new installation includes a basic configuration, while many advanced features are disabled by default and must be activated. The project says it has no trusted build infrastructure; binary packages are built and uploaded by individual project members or external contributors. Users who need a controlled build supply should weigh that limitation before deployment.

Platforms

Privoxy runs on Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, Haiku, BSD variants, Solaris, and other Unix flavors. The directory categorizes it for Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted use, with desktop device coverage and support for multiple browsers. Its network-server and LAN-gateway modes also make it relevant to shared environments.

Who it's for

Privoxy suits people interested in privacy, security, or fine-grained control of their web experience who are prepared to manage proxy rules. It can serve a technically comfortable desktop user or a network operator filtering web traffic for several clients. It is a poor fit for anyone seeking malware removal, filtering across non-web protocols, or a hands-off blocker with advanced behavior enabled from the start. Users can discuss issues on the Privoxy users mailing list, where developers also participate.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad web customization: Page filtering, text replacement, header modification, and removal rules provide multiple ways to tailor HTTP and HTTPS browsing.
Network flexibility: It can serve multiple clients or act as a LAN gateway, rather than being limited to one desktop browser.
No-cost, GPL software: Users may use, copy, modify, and distribute it without registration.

Cons

Limited protocol scope: It handles HTTP and HTTPS proxying, not FTP, SMTP, IM, IRC, or ICQ.
Not malware protection: Malware removal is outside its purpose, and the default configuration does not attempt malware filtering.
Advanced setup takes work: Many advanced features start disabled and require activation.
Binary supply-chain caveat: The project has no trusted build infrastructure, and individual members or external contributors upload binary packages.

mitmproxy is another free option if an interactive HTTPS proxy better fits your needs.
3proxy is a free, open-source alternative for readers comparing proxy software.
Squid may suit readers who want self-hosted proxy software that can be downloaded, used, and modified for free, with third-party commercial support potentially available.
LatentSync offers a free open-source release with inference code and checkpoints, a data processing pipeline, and training code.
Tinyproxy is another free proxy option, with source code under GNU GPL version 2 or later.
Skyhigh Private Access is a paid alternative for readers considering a different access product.
WinGate is a Windows-only freemium alternative; its Standard plan for 6 concurrent users costs 109.95 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose Privoxy if you want free, rule-based control over HTTP and HTTPS traffic and are willing to configure a proxy for yourself or a network. Its filtering range and ability to serve multiple clients are the main reasons to pick it. Look elsewhere if you need malware protection, broader protocol handling, or advanced controls that work without setup.
