Overview

PostHog brings product and web analytics together with session replay, feature flags, event routing, and a data warehouse. That combination can keep analysis and product changes close to the same workflow; teams looking only for a narrow analytics tool may find the wider suite unnecessary.

The company was founded in San Francisco in 2020. PostHog says it offers an open-source product under the MIT license. Its Trust Center lists SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA compliance, as well as controls including audit logging, multifactor authentication, encryption in transit and at rest, backups, and application penetration testing. Its products are covered by an independently audited SOC 2 Type II report.

Key features

Analytics and session replay

Event tracking, conversion funnels, heatmaps, graphs and trends, lifecycle analysis, and user paths provide several ways to examine product use. Session Replay records sessions from web, React Native, iOS, Android, Flutter, and other SDKs. The combination helps teams move between broad patterns and individual sessions, although free-plan recordings are retained for only one month.

Feature flags and customer data

Feature Flags can target users, groups, or traffic percentages, with phased rollouts, kill switches, multivariate variants, JSON payloads, and beta opt-ins. This makes the suite relevant to teams that want to manage releases alongside product analysis. Its CDP transforms events in real time and routes them to more than 50 destinations, including webhooks, Slack, Braze, and Customer.io.

Warehouse and desktop agent

The integrated data warehouse can also use external warehouses such as Snowflake or BigQuery as data sources. PostHog Desktop is a coding agent for macOS, Windows, and Linux that can draw on signals such as errors, support tickets, session replays, GitHub issues, Linear, and Zendesk to investigate causes and create pull requests. These tools extend PostHog beyond measurement, but are most relevant to teams prepared to use a broader product suite.

Pricing

Free

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly, with no credit card required. Its monthly allowances are 1M analytics events, 5K session recordings, 1M feature-flag requests, 100K exceptions, 1,500 survey responses, and 1M warehouse rows. It is a substantial starting tier for teams whose usage fits those caps; community support and one-month recording retention are important constraints. Events and metadata are retained for one year.

Pay-as-you-go Analytics

Pay-as-you-go Analytics has custom pricing and includes 1M free analytics events per month, six projects, and seven-year data retention. It suits teams that prioritize longer-lived analytics data and multiple projects, but does not include the broader stated package of unlimited usage and email support.

Pay-as-you-go

Pay-as-you-go has custom pricing, is billed based on usage once a month, and includes unlimited usage, six projects, seven-year data retention, and email support. Slack support is available to customers spending over $2,000 per month. This tier fits teams that need more room and direct support, though usage-based billing calls for attention to consumption. Paid plans guarantee seven-year retention for events and metadata.

There is no free trial. The Free plan is the clearest way to start without a credit card, while the paid options make retention, project count, and support the key distinctions.

Platforms

PostHog supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, API, and self-hosted use. PostHog Desktop is available for macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows, and Linux, including AppImage, .deb, and .rpm packages. That spread gives teams options across mobile, desktop, and hosted environments.

Who it's for

PostHog is best suited to product and engineering teams that want behavioral analytics, session context, feature rollout controls, and customer-data movement in one suite. Its mobile SDK coverage and multiple deployment platforms broaden its fit. A team that needs only lightweight analytics, or cannot work within the free tier’s recording retention and support limits, should weigh a more focused alternative.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad product toolkit: Analytics, replay, feature flags, event routing, and a warehouse sit within one suite, useful for teams linking product insight to releases and data workflows.
Useful release controls: Targeting, phased rollouts, kill switches, variants, and beta opt-ins support controlled feature delivery.
Wide platform reach: Android, iOS, web, desktop, API, and self-hosted options cover varied product environments.
Substantial free allowances: The Free plan spans analytics, recordings, feature-flag requests, exceptions, surveys, and warehouse rows without requiring a credit card.

Cons

Short free recording retention: Recordings last one month on Free, limiting how far back teams can review sessions.
Support starts at a basic level: Free users get community support; email support is part of Pay-as-you-go, and Slack support requires more than $2,000 in monthly spend.
Paid costs depend on use: The paid plans use custom pricing, and the broader Pay-as-you-go tier is billed by usage once a month.
