Overview

Plane Contractor Management is the contractor service within Plane’s payroll and HR platform. It is best for companies that want to manage cross-border contractor payments alongside employee administration. The main trade-off is a $39 per-person monthly charge for contractors who are active.

Plane combines payments with the paperwork and expense workflows around them. It supports payments in 240+ countries and 70+ local currencies, and contractors can use their Plane accounts to request payment and check its status. Localized contract templates, tax forms, reimbursements and accounting exports make it more than a payout tool; that breadth will matter most to teams consolidating finance and HR tasks.

Key features

Payments and contractor accounts: Companies can automate contractor payments, while contractors can submit payment requests and track status in their accounts. Payments are supported in 240+ countries and 70+ local currencies, with no e-wallet required on the Contractors plan. This suits globally distributed teams that need a shared payment workflow.
Contracts and tax administration: Plane provides localized contract templates reviewed by US and local lawyers, and customers may use their own agreements. It collects W-8 and W-9 forms and prepares and files 1099 forms. These features can centralize routine documentation; they do not replace a company’s responsibility for its engagement and compliance decisions.
Classification guidance: Plane says its experts can advise whether a worker should be hired as an employee or contractor. That is useful input when teams assess worker status, not a substitute for the company’s own decision.
Expenses and accounting: Contractors and employees can submit expenses for approval and reimbursement. QuickBooks Online integration prepares and exports journal entries, a practical fit for organizations already using that accounting system.
Developer access and support: An open API, CLI and MCP access are offered, with sandbox access on every plan. Plane says it provides 24/5 human support by email, chat and Slack, including support for contractors.
Security and privacy: Plane says it has SOC 2 Type I compliance and is compliant with GDPR and CCPA.

Pricing

Plane has a free HRIS Platform plan at 0.00 USD per month, billed $0 /mo per person. It includes guided hiring and onboarding with tasks, a contractor and employee directory, custom reports, holidays and time tracking. This is a useful no-cost starting point for basic people administration, but it does not include the paid Contractors plan’s stated payment coverage, W-8 and W-9 collection, 1099 filing or health-insurance availability.

The Contractors plan costs 39.00 USD per month, billed $39 /mo per person. It includes payments in 240+ countries and 70+ local currencies, no e-wallet requirement, W-8 and W-9 collection, 1099 filing and health insurance availability. Contractor pricing is month-to-month, charges only for active contractors, and has no signup or cancellation fees. The per-person charge makes the price straightforward to scale with active headcount, but it can add up for larger contractor teams.

Plane’s pricing model is freemium, and the published paid starting price is $39/user/mo. The free plan covers HRIS functions; teams that need contractor payments and tax handling should budget for Contractors.

Platforms

Plane supports web and API access. The API, CLI and MCP options, plus sandbox access on every plan, suit teams that need to connect workflows or build integrations; no mobile platform is stated.

Who it's for

Plane is a strong fit for companies paying international contractors that also want contracts, tax forms, expense approvals and accounting exports in a payroll and HR platform. It is less compelling for teams that only need a low-cost payment tool or have a large contractor roster sensitive to per-person fees.

Pros and cons

Pro: Payments cover 240+ countries and 70+ local currencies, with no e-wallet requirement, widening payment options for internationally distributed teams.
Pro: Contracts, tax forms, expenses and QuickBooks Online journal-entry exports sit alongside payments, reducing the need to split those workflows across separate tools.
Pro: Month-to-month contractor billing only charges for active contractors and has no signup or cancellation fees, avoiding a long-term commitment.
Con: The Contractors plan costs $39 per person per month, which may be a significant ongoing cost for businesses with many active contractors.
Con: The free plan is for HRIS tasks and does not include the paid plan’s contractor payment and tax features, so payment-focused teams need the paid tier.

Alternatives

Worksome is worth considering if its pricing structure suits your contractor spend: its Core Platform uses either a percentage of contractor spend or a flat annual subscription, with a tailored quote required. Its stated plan includes unlimited seats and no per-contractor licenses.

WorkMarket is another option, with Android, iOS, API and web platforms; its Recurring Edition price requires login to view. Consider Beeline, G-P Contractor, Highwire or Magnit VMS if you want to compare other contractor-management products.
