Overview

Rather than hosting an AI service, SillyTavern runs locally and connects to model backends. That makes it a flexible workspace for users who want to control how conversations are structured, but less suitable for someone seeking a ready-made chatbot with no installation or model configuration.

The project is free and open-source under the AGPL-3.0 license, and says it will remain so. It reports more than 300 contributors and began in February 2023 as a fork of TavernAI 1.2.8. It provides no hosted services and says it does not programmatically track user data. However, a cloud model provider may log data sent to its service. API keys are kept in a secrets.json file in the user data directory and hidden in the interface by default after saving and refreshing.

Key features

Character and prompt controls

Users can create or import character cards, switch between them, and resume or review saved chat histories. Group chats, user personas, and lorebooks give users ways to shape participants and context. Prompt controls, chat commands, scripting, and built-in retrieval-augmented generation add fine-grained options for those who want to tune interactions. That breadth is useful for deliberate world-building and experimentation, but may be needless complexity for casual conversation.

Model connections and extensions

SillyTavern supports local and cloud LLM backends, including KoboldCpp, llama.cpp, Ollama, OpenAI, Claude, Mistral, OpenRouter, and AI Horde. Extensions support character sprites, chat summarization and translation, image generation, text-to-speech, and web search; image-generation integrations include Stable Diffusion, FLUX, and DALL-E. This range lets users assemble a varied chat workflow, while requiring them to select and connect the services or models they want.

Pricing

SillyTavern is free and open-source. Its SillyTavern plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no paid plan or free trial. The interface itself has no subscription cost, though cloud model use may involve separate provider terms or costs. The free plan suits users willing to manage their own setup; it does not turn SillyTavern into a hosted service.

Platforms

SillyTavern supports Android, Linux, macOS, self-hosted use, web, and Windows. It has no native mobile apps, so mobile availability should not be mistaken for a dedicated app. Systems must support NodeJS 20 or higher. For local inference, the documentation recommends an NVIDIA 3000-series GPU with at least 6GB of VRAM, a meaningful constraint for users without suitable hardware.

Who it's for

Choose SillyTavern if you want to manage character chats, prompts, model connections, and extensions in one locally installed interface, and are comfortable configuring the pieces yourself. It is a weaker fit if you want an immediately usable hosted companion, or plan to maintain a very large character collection: performance degradation can become noticeable above 1,000 characters. Help is directed through its Discord community, GitHub issues, and documentation.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, open-source access avoids an interface subscription and permits extensive prompt and character controls.
Pros: Connections to local and cloud backends, plus media extensions, give power users flexibility over their setup.
Cons: Local inference has a high recommended hardware baseline, and users must configure their own model connections.
Cons: The project provides no hosted service, and cloud providers may log submitted data.
Cons: Libraries above 1,000 characters can bring noticeable performance degradation.

Alternatives

HammerAI is worth considering if you want a free tier with 600 cloud messages per day, an 8,192-token context, two cloud LLMs, and local-model and API-proxy options across mobile and desktop platforms.

Nastia may suit readers who prefer a companion-focused service with uncensored chat and daily token limits on its free plan, or an Unlimited plan for 15.99 USD per month.

Backyard AI is an option for users seeking a free desktop app alongside a free tier capped at 300 messages per week, one included model, and 16k max memory.

CrushOn.AI offers unlimited chats on free AI models, 100 monthly credits for Pro Models, and 20 daily Inspiration Replies on its free plan.

RolePlai may appeal to readers who want unlimited AI character chat on a free plan, with ads and standard memory and intelligence.

Ruby Chat is another option with free companion chats and optional premium features.

JanitorAI is an alternative with a free app download and in-app purchases.

Openworld AI is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows users.

Verdict

SillyTavern is a strong choice for technically comfortable AI hobbyists who want detailed control over character chats and model connections without paying for the interface. Look elsewhere if you need a hosted, ready-to-use experience, lack suitable hardware for local inference, or expect to manage a very large character library.
