Overview

Redact detects names, addresses, phone numbers, SSNs, account and card numbers, dates of birth, and medical details in PDFs, Word documents, and scans. Users can add custom terms and review detections before removal, a useful safeguard when automated matches need judgment. Redact deletes sensitive text from file content instead of simply placing a black rectangle over it.

Detection, review, and redaction take place on the user’s PC, and documents are not uploaded. Built-in OCR reads scans, including image-only PDFs, which makes the app a practical fit for paper-derived records as well as text documents. It requires internet for activation and periodic subscription checks, but works offline between checks. PineThink’s apps send anonymous usage statistics without file content; users can disable this telemetry in settings.

Key features

Automated detection with review: Coverage of identity, financial, and medical information, plus custom terms, helps with varied records. Reviewing each match is important because users remain responsible for deciding what should be removed.
OCR for scans: Built-in OCR extends redaction to scanned files and image-only PDFs, rather than limiting the workflow to searchable text.
Batch workflow: Premium can redact folders using saved settings and custom term lists, and produces per-file audit reports. This is more suited to repeated document handling than the free tier’s one-at-a-time approach.
AI agent access: Premium includes access through MCP, a specific option for users who want to connect an AI agent to the app.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows single-document redaction for personal use. It needs no account, but excludes commercial use and batch processing, so it fits occasional individual work rather than a business workflow.

Premium costs 6.99 USD per month, billed $6.99 a month after a free 14-day trial. It adds batch redaction, saved settings and custom term lists, per-file audit reports, commercial use, and AI agent access through MCP. Premium requires a PineThink account, with Google sign-in or an emailed code. The trial is useful for evaluating the paid workflow, but ongoing subscription checks mean the app must periodically connect to the internet.

Platforms

Redact is desktop software for macOS and Windows. Its local processing and offline operation between subscription checks suit users who want documents to remain on their own PC, though activation and periodic checks still require internet access.

Who it's for

The maker names legal and case files, medical records, HR and finance documents, and FOIA and disclosure as use cases. Free is appropriate for personal, one-document-at-a-time redaction; Premium is the better fit for commercial use or recurring folder-based work that benefits from saved settings and audit reports. Users who need a fully disconnected setup should look elsewhere because activation and subscription confirmation require internet.

Pros and cons

Pro: Documents stay on the user’s PC rather than being uploaded, a meaningful advantage for sensitive records.
Pro: OCR handles scanned and image-only PDFs, broadening the range of documents that can be processed.
Pro: Review before deletion and removal from file content provide a more deliberate workflow than a visual cover-up alone.
Con: Free use is personal and one document at a time, ruling it out for commercial work and limiting throughput.
Con: Batch tools and audit reports require a paid subscription, so repeated workflows cannot stay on the free plan.
Con: Internet is required for activation and periodic subscription checks, despite offline operation between checks.

Alternatives

Excise is a free alternative if its open-source option and listed API, Linux, macOS, and Windows platforms suit your needs. LocalRedact is a free Python package with an optional local HTTP service, worth considering for users who prefer that form of deployment. Philter offers a free personal and evaluation desktop plan with full on-device redaction and community support on GitHub; choose it if those terms fit better.

BleachPDF is a free, no-subscription option that runs on your own computer and supports Linux and macOS. PDFRedaction is a web alternative with a free allowance of 10 documents a day for registered users and features including OCR, image redaction, and local processing. Redactable offers three free documents and then pay-as-you-go billing, a different fit for limited web-based use.

RedactFile has a free web/API plan with daily upload, file-size, storage, and AI-credit limits; it may suit users seeking that service format. RedactLaw offers a free web plan capped at five documents per month, up to 10 pages per document, and one user, with a paid Starter plan for users whose needs exceed those caps. For a broader directory, see Document Redaction Software.

Verdict

Choose PineThink Redact if you need local, reviewable redaction across text documents and scans, and especially if your work benefits from Premium’s batch workflow and audit reports. Its combination of OCR and content deletion is compelling for sensitive records kept on a desktop. Look elsewhere if you need commercial use without a subscription, unlimited free throughput, or activation that never requires an internet connection.
