Overview

Creators can share work for free and add paid options later, or earn through memberships, one-time payments, tiers, and shops. Monthly and annual subscriptions support recurring income, while payment infrastructure handles chargebacks, disputes, and fraud; Patreon also manages most applicable tax collection and remittance. That removes some operational work, though it does not remove payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees, or applicable taxes from the cost calculation.

Patreon’s stated creator categories include podcasters, video creators, musicians, artists, and game developers. Its tools are broad enough to combine publishing and member interaction in one place, but creators who want to avoid a percentage-based platform fee should compare other approaches.

Key features

Publishing and community

Audio, images, rich text, native video, and livestreaming cover a wide range of creator work. Individual livestreams can run for up to 12 continuous hours, a practical ceiling for ordinary broadcasts but a constraint for longer events. Chats, direct messages, comments, newsletters, and exportable email lists give creators several ways to reach members. Chat is capped at 10 spaces, with access configurable for all members, paid members, or selected tiers.

Membership growth and podcasts

Free trials, discounts, sales, analytics, insights, and discovery tools support audience growth. Podcast tools include importing and syncing shows, managing multiple podcasts, and Spotify, Synced Feeds, and RSS support. Integrations and partners include Vimeo, Discord, ConvertKit, Discourse, Wix, and Zapier.

Patreon supports PayPal, Apple Pay, Venmo, and Sofort, and supports 16 or more currencies for payouts and pay-ins. It says it uses TLS for sensitive information, HTTPS for traffic, two-factor authentication, and CAPTCHA checks for suspicious activity; it also offers a bug bounty programme and accepts security reports.

Pricing

Creators can start for 0.00 USD per free and pay when they earn. The standard Patreon pricing is 0.00 USD per free, with a 10% fee on income earned through Patreon, plus payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and applicable taxes. This includes monthly and annual subscriptions, membership tiers, one-time payments, and free-to-start access. The headline free price is therefore not a no-cost earning plan.

The Standard plan has no published price and includes up to 100 hours per month of video hosting if the creator has paying fans. The 10% platform fee is also expressed as 10.00 USD per month in the plan details, alongside applicable fees and taxes; the operative rate is 10% of income earned on Patreon. No free-tier limits are stated, so creators can share free work and introduce paid options later without a stated cap.

Platforms

Patreon is available on the web, iOS, and Android, and provides an API. Its public API v1 is scheduled to stop working on October 7, 2026, with integrations directed to API v2. Patreon also supports custom domains.

Who it's for

Patreon is a strong fit for creators who want memberships and digital sales alongside publishing, member conversations, and podcast tools, especially when free and paid work need to coexist. It is less compelling for creators whose priority is minimizing platform charges, since the 10% fee is supplemented by payment and other applicable fees.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple ways to earn—recurring subscriptions, one-time payments, tiers, and shops—let creators shape different offers for their audience.
Pro: Publishing, community, podcast, and growth tools sit alongside payments, reducing the need to assemble those functions separately.
Pro: Free-to-start access lets creators publish before deciding to introduce paid options.
Con: The 10% platform fee, plus processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and applicable taxes, can make earnings costly to monetize through Patreon.
Con: Livestreams stop at 12 continuous hours and creators can make no more than 10 chat spaces, which may restrict unusually intensive use.
Con: API v1 is scheduled to stop working on October 7, 2026, so integrations must move to API v2.

Verdict

Choose Patreon if you want to bring paid memberships, one-time sales, publishing, community, and podcast tools together, with the option to start by sharing work for free. Look elsewhere if keeping platform costs low is the priority: Patreon takes 10% of income earned on the platform, with other fees and taxes potentially adding to the bill.
