Overview

SoapUI is an open-source API testing tool for developers and testers who need to validate web services across REST, SOAP, or GraphQL. It is a strong fit when a team wants functional and regression testing, mocking, and command-line automation without a software fee; look elsewhere if expanded security testing is central.

Its reach extends to JMS and WS-Security configuration, which makes it useful for service environments beyond straightforward REST requests. The trade-off is a clear boundary: SoapUI Open Source covers basic functional and performance testing, while expanded security-testing capabilities are associated with ReadyAPI.

It belongs among API Testing Tools and Integration Testing Tools. Readers comparing request-oriented software can also browse API clients.

Key features

Functional and regression testing

Drag-and-drop test creation, assertions, and data-driven tests let teams check service behavior across varied inputs. That combination suits repeatable validation and regression work better than a tool focused only on sending individual requests.

Service mocking and protocols

SoapUI can build service mocks from WSDL and mock SOAP and REST APIs. Its stated protocol support also includes GraphQL and JMS, giving teams a way to cover several service styles in one testing tool.

Performance testing and automation

Load testing extends functional tests, and tests can run from command-line tools. Maven, Hudson, Bamboo, JUnit, and Ant integrations, along with support for running from other CI tools, make it practical to incorporate test execution into established build workflows.

WS-Security

SoapUI can configure security for incoming and outgoing WS-Security messages, including encryption, signatures, SAML, keystores, and truststores. This is useful for validating secured SOAP exchanges, but it does not erase the distinction between SoapUI Open Source’s basic testing scope and ReadyAPI’s expanded security-testing capabilities.

Pricing

SoapUI Open Source

The plan is free and includes REST, SOAP, and GraphQL API testing, functional and regression testing, API mocking, and command-line automation. It is the natural starting point for individual developers and teams that can meet their needs with the open-source tool. No paid SoapUI plan is described, so there is no stated seat allowance, usage quota, or trial term to weigh against the free offering.

The main limitation is capability scope rather than a stated usage cap: Open Source is for basic functional and performance testing, while expanded security testing is associated with ReadyAPI. Teams requiring that broader scope should consider ReadyAPI rather than assume it comes with the free edition.

Platforms

SoapUI is described for Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix, and the product’s platform set also includes self-hosted use. This cross-platform coverage suits teams working across common desktop operating systems; its named platforms do not include a web client.

Who it's for

SoapUI is best suited to developers and testers beginning API testing or needing a free tool for functional, regression, mock-service, and command-line workflows. It is especially relevant where SOAP/WSDL, JMS, or WS-Security matter alongside REST and GraphQL. It is a less direct fit for teams seeking an API client primarily for ad hoc requests or expanded security testing beyond the open-source scope.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free open-source plan covers REST, SOAP, and GraphQL testing, functional and regression tests, mocking, and command-line automation, a broad base for teams starting API validation.
Pros: WSDL-based mocks, JMS support, and detailed WS-Security configuration address service-testing needs that extend beyond basic REST checks.
Pros: Named build and CI integrations support repeatable test execution within established automation workflows.
Cons: Open Source is scoped to basic functional and performance testing; teams needing expanded security testing must look to ReadyAPI.
Cons: The named platform coverage is desktop and self-hosted rather than web-based, which may not suit teams seeking a browser-first tool.

Alternatives

Choose Postman if its free plan’s API client and core tools, specs and mock servers, Native Git, and Collection Runner better match a request-centric workflow.

Apidog is an alternative with a time-unlimited free plan for four users, while its Basic plan is $12.00 USD per month; consider it when those stated plan terms suit your team.

Insomnia offers an Essentials plan with Git Sync projects for three users and 1,000 mock-server requests per month, so it may suit teams whose needs fit those limits.

Bruno offers an open-source plan limited to two workspaces and five OpenAPI syncs per month, with community support; choose it if those limits and support model fit.

Hoppscotch is an option for REST, GraphQL, and realtime API testing with a personal workspace, collections, environments, and pre-request scripts in its free plan.

Hurl is a free open-source command-line tool with no paid plans stated, making it a straightforward alternative when a command-line tool is the preference.

Testfully offers a Developer Edition with one offline and one cloud workspace and up to five invited users per workspace.

OpenReq is a free, open-source self-hosted web application with a standalone desktop application and Windows client, and no subscription tiers.

Verdict

Choose SoapUI if you are a developer or tester who wants free, cross-platform API testing with broad protocol support, mocks, and automation. Its combination of functional and regression tests with SOAP- and WSDL-oriented capabilities is the strongest reason to pick it. Look elsewhere if expanded security testing or a web-based workflow is a priority.
