Overview

VTube Studio is built for creators who want a Live2D avatar to respond to their face, gestures, and audience. Its range of tracking and scene controls makes it a strong fit for interactive 2D streaming; the Steam watermark and separate collaboration DLC are worth weighing before committing.

It combines webcam or iPhone face tracking with webcam hand tracking, model props, lip sync, and Twitch interactions. The breadth suits creators who want one app to handle avatar control and stream presentation, though its mobile tracking depends on specific device capabilities.

Key features

Tracking and presentation

Webcam and iPhone tracking support eye movement and winking, while webcam-based hand and gesture tracking can activate expressions and animations. That gives creators several ways to make a model react without relying only on face movement. Hotkeys and microphone lip sync add direct controls for performance and speech.

Users can attach imported images, animations, and customizable Live2D props to a model, then control them with tracking or hotkeys. Animated PNG props and post-processing effects expand scene styling. Virtual camera and recording support also make the app relevant beyond live streaming.

Audience interaction and extensibility

Twitch viewers can use emotes and trigger hotkeys through redeems, subscriptions, and chat commands. This is a practical advantage for streams built around audience participation. The VTube Studio API allows developers to distribute plugins that control models or trigger expressions and animations, offering scope to extend the workflow.

Collaboration and privacy

VNet lets Steam friends collaborate in the app on Windows or macOS, with sessions for up to six people. It requires starting VTube Studio through Steam and buying the VNet DLC. Shared assets are encrypted and sent to participants in memory, but participants may be able to copy shared files with specialized tools; DenchiSoft cannot decrypt them.

DenchiSoft says the apps do not collect user information and that app data, models, images, videos, and face-tracking data are not shared. When enabled, iOS tracking data can be sent to an IP address on the user's local network. Users should consider that network option and the limits of shared-asset protection when collaborating.

Pricing

VTube Studio is freemium, with no free trial. The free app supports Live2D models, webcam and smartphone tracking, and voice-based lip sync. On Steam, webcam tracking displays a watermark, so creators who need a clean webcam-tracked output must account for the one-time removal cost.

Free: 0.00 USD per free. Includes Live2D model support, webcam tracking, smartphone tracking, and voice-based lip sync.
VTube Studio (Steam): 0.00 USD per free. The free app, with a watermark during webcam tracking.
VTube Studio - Remove Watermark (Steam DLC): 14.99 USD per once. Removes the watermark shown during webcam face tracking.
VTube Studio - VNet Multiplayer Collab (Steam DLC): 19.99 USD per once. Adds online collaboration for Windows and macOS.

The free option is a sensible starting point for creators who can accept the Steam webcam watermark. The watermark DLC is a one-time purchase rather than a recurring fee; VNet is a separate purchase for people who specifically need shared sessions. Companies with prior fiscal-year income above US$200,000 require a company license, for which DenchiSoft requests quote inquiries by email.

Platforms

VTube Studio is available on Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. iOS requires Face ID or an Apple A12 chip or newer; Android requires a phone that supports Google ARCore. Check those requirements before choosing a phone-based tracking setup. VNet collaboration is limited to Windows and macOS and requires Steam.

Who it's for

VTube Studio is best suited to Live2D creators who want expressive tracking, configurable props, and audience-triggered interactions in one workflow. It is particularly compelling for Twitch streamers who want viewers to trigger hotkeys, and for developers interested in API-based plugins. It is less suitable for users whose devices do not meet the mobile tracking requirements or who need multiplayer collaboration without Steam DLC.

DenchiSoft points users to its community Discord and official documentation for help, but its license does not guarantee technical support. That is a consideration for creators who need assured support.

Verdict

Choose VTube Studio if you want a Live2D-centered setup with layered tracking, audience-triggered controls, and a capable free starting point.
