Overview

Founded in 2020 and based in Amsterdam, OpenUp serves employees, managers, family members and organisations from start-ups to large enterprises. Its scope extends beyond therapy to lifestyle, financial and nutrition support, with group sessions and self-guided learning alongside live expert appointments.

For employees covered by an employer partnership, unlimited sessions can be booked without approval, with appointments available within 48 hours. The breadth of support and lack of an approval step make the employer plan practical for recurring needs, though the employer pays custom pricing rather than a published rate.

Key features

Expert-led support: Therapy, coaching and live sessions draw on a network of more than 200 certified psychologists, lifestyle experts, financial coaches, nutritionists and medical doctors. Coaching is offered in 45 languages, a useful range for international teams.
Self-guided tools: The Vitality Check takes about 10 minutes, then provides personalised recommendations. Its organisational insights are anonymised, so they offer employers a group-level view rather than identifying individual users.
Privacy and security: Managers and HR cannot see who uses OpenUp or what they discuss; employers receive aggregated, anonymised insights. OpenUp states that its information security system is certified to ISO 27001 and NEN 7510, and that health data is held in the EU and handled within the European Economic Area. Those safeguards matter for employees wary of sharing sensitive concerns through a workplace benefit.
AI coach and session notes: The AI well-being coach helps users reflect and consider next steps, but it does not diagnose or provide clinical advice. It offers a 24/7 human escalation pathway for acute distress signals. AI-assisted session notes require consent, are reviewed by the expert, and do not retain audio or video recordings.
Additional access: A support line staffed by qualified mental health first aid responders is available any time, day or night. Employees with a Microsoft account can use single sign-on to access MyOpenUp.

Pricing

OpenUp is a paid service with a free plan and free trial. For individuals whose employer does not provide access, the first session is free; after that, a Three-session card costs €249.00 per once for three online sessions of 25 minutes each. That gives independent users a defined way to continue, but the short sessions and upfront card are less suited to someone seeking a low-cost ongoing option.

The Employer partnership is billed per employee per year at custom pricing and includes unlimited 1:1 sessions for employees. It suits organisations that want recurring access rather than a fixed session allowance, but there is no published price to compare before requesting a tailored quote.

Platforms

OpenUp is available on web, iOS and Android. The mobile apps are distributed through the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, and Microsoft single sign-on is supported for eligible employees.

Who it's for

OpenUp is a good fit for employers seeking a confidential benefit with live professional support, self-guided learning and broad topic coverage. Employees who value choice among therapy, coaching and practical well-being support can make use of the expert network and multilingual coaching. It is less compelling for individuals who need an affordable continuing service beyond the free first appointment and three-session card, or for buyers who need a published employer price to compare options directly.

Pros and cons

Pros: Employer-covered employees can book unlimited sessions without approval, with appointments available within 48 hours.
Pros: Confidentiality separates individual use and discussion from employer access, while still providing anonymised aggregate insights.
Pros: More than 200 certified experts and coaching in 45 languages support a broad, international workforce.
Cons: Employer partnership pricing is custom, so organisations cannot assess the per-employee annual cost without a quote.
Cons: Individual continuation costs €249.00 per once for only three 25-minute sessions, limiting its appeal for ongoing self-funded support.
Cons: The AI coach is for reflection and next steps, not diagnosis or clinical advice; users needing clinical guidance must turn to human support.

Alternatives

Choose Remente if a freemium service with a free plan is a better fit; it is available on web, iOS and Android. DearEmployee is another freemium option with a free plan, accessed on the web.

Modern Health may suit employers considering a paid, employer-sponsored PEPM benefit: pricing is available through a conversation, and the benefit package determines which features and services are included. Unmind is a paid workplace platform with negotiated enterprise agreements based on population, geography and scope. Amaha for Work, Health Advocate EAP and Intellect are also paid alternatives.

Verdict

OpenUp is best for organisations that want employees to have private, flexible access to human experts, supported by self-guided resources and multilingual coaching. Its central strength is unlimited employer-covered sessions without approval, backed by clear separation between individual use and employer reporting. Look elsewhere if you need transparent employer pricing or an affordable self-funded route to ongoing support.
