Overview

Founded in 2007, Opencast combines scheduled capture, processing, editing, access controls and distribution in a system built for academic video. That breadth can support a consistent campus workflow, but it also makes Opencast a more substantial undertaking than a standalone recorder. Institutions can run it on one Linux server or distribute it across multiple Linux servers as needs grow.

Key features

Administrators can schedule recordings and live streams through the admin interface; classroom-triggered recording depends on the hardware in place. Opencast Studio adds browser-based recording without requiring an Opencast installation, useful for contributors who need to make video outside equipped rooms. Automatic captioning and searchable transcripts help make recordings more accessible and discoverable.

Configurable workflows can automate caption generation, branding, thumbnails and delivery at custom resolutions and bitrates. The integrated editor supports multiple streams, subtitles and cover-thumbnail changes. These production tools are valuable for institutions standardizing course media, though organizations needing only basic recording may not need the wider system.

Fine-grained viewing and editing permissions support controlled access, and signed media URLs expire after a configured period, usually an hour depending on server settings. LMS integration can provide single sign-on and delivery. Opencast integrates with Brightspace, Canvas, ILIAS, Moodle, Sakai and Stud.IP, and can connect to any LMS supporting LTI.

The default player is Paella Player. Tobira, a separate media portal, keeps videos online during Opencast maintenance. Other integrations include BigBlueButton and Zoom recording, Matomo analytics, WordPress, Prometheus-compatible metrics, Whisper transcription and YouTube distribution.

Pricing

Opencast is free and open-source software: its plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There are no paid tiers described; adopters instead need to plan for deployment and support, which depend on their setup and community partners. Demo instances let prospective users try the administrative interface and video portal without installing the system. Community-vetted partners offer commercial support, development and integration assistance.

Platforms

Opencast supports Linux, self-hosted and web environments, with an API. The Linux deployment options suit institutions able to operate their own infrastructure; this is not a turnkey hosted service.

Who it's for

Opencast is best for universities and other academic institutions that need scheduled lecture capture, controlled video access and LMS delivery at scale, and have the capacity to deploy and maintain Linux servers. It is less suitable for teams seeking a simple recorder with no infrastructure responsibilities.

Pros and cons

Pros: A single academic video workflow covers scheduled and browser recording, automated processing, editing, permissions and LMS delivery.
Pros: Linux deployment can start on one server and scale across multiple distributed servers.
Pros: Multiple named LMS integrations, plus LTI support, offer options for connecting course video to existing teaching systems.
Cons: Adopters must handle deployment, and support may require engaging a community partner.
Cons: Classroom-triggered recording depends on hardware, so the software alone does not guarantee room capture.
Cons: Its extensive workflow may be unnecessary for organizations that only need straightforward recording.

Alternatives

For a freemium option with a free plan and trial across Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted platforms, consider Presentations2Go. Choose Planet eStream if its modular paid pricing suits the features and school-group structure you need; room capture has no per-room licence cost. Vbrick Enterprise Video Platform is a paid option with pricing scoped to use case, audience and library size, among other factors. Impartus Lecture Capture System is a paid alternative for readers prepared to request a demo.

Lecture2Go offers an open-source media and distribution portal for educational institutions, while lectureStudio is a free option for web, Windows, macOS and Linux. Galicaster-PRO and GoCast are other web-based alternatives. Browse Lecture Capture Software or Video Podcast Software for more options.

Verdict

Choose Opencast if your institution needs a free, extensible academic video pipeline linking capture, processing, access controls and LMS delivery, and can own the Linux deployment. Look elsewhere if you want a managed, low-setup service or only need simple recording; Opencast’s operational commitment is the main trade-off for its broad institutional workflow.
