Overview

OBS Studio is a desktop production tool for combining video and audio sources into recordings or live broadcasts. Its scene-based workflow gives creators control over how a stream is assembled and switched; the trade-off is that it is not a browser studio and requires a compatible desktop system.

For streamers and video makers who want configurable production controls without a subscription, it is a strong fit. Its breadth of tools also means it is better suited to people willing to set up scenes and audio than to someone looking only for a quick, automatic gameplay clip recorder.

Key features

Scenes and live production

Scenes can combine windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams and capture cards, and there is no stated scene-count cap. Custom transitions, including user-supplied stinger videos, let creators make scene changes part of a production rather than a bare cut. Studio Mode provides a preview before a scene goes live, while Multiview monitors up to eight scenes. Those controls are useful for planned broadcasts; they may be more apparatus than a casual recorder needs.

Hotkeys cover many actions, including recording and streaming controls, helping operators trigger routine changes without navigating menus. OBS supports streaming to popular services such as Twitch and YouTube. Streams connect directly from the computer to the streaming service rather than routing through OBS servers.

Audio and extensibility

The mixer provides filters for individual sources, including noise gate, noise suppression and gain, and accepts VST plugins. That gives creators ways to shape audio within the same production workflow. An API supports plugins and Lua or Python scripts, making OBS adaptable for users who want to extend or customize it, though this flexibility is most valuable to people prepared to manage those additions.

Pricing

OBS Studio costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan has no watermarks or usage limitations and allows commercial use, subject to its GPLv2 license terms. There is no free trial because the software itself is free. This is an unusually clear choice for individuals and commercial creators who want recording and streaming without a paid tier or stated usage cap.

Platforms

OBS is desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux, not a browser-based studio. It supports Windows 10 and 11; macOS requirements differ across the supplied requirements, so check compatibility with the current download before installing. Linux distribution is through Flathub and an Ubuntu 24.04-or-newer PPA. The product supports up to 4K resolution, offers encoder-based streaming, and includes stream scheduling and loop or replay streams; multistreaming is not supported.

Who it's for

OBS is best for streamers, educators, creators and other video makers who want to compose multiple sources, manage scenes, and control audio in a free, extensible desktop application. Its commercial-use permission also makes it viable for professional productions. It is a less natural choice for anyone who needs browser access, multistreaming, or a focused clip-capture workflow with built-in game highlight features.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, open-source software with no watermarks or usage limitations, suitable for commercial use under GPLv2.
Pros: Unlimited scenes, preview and multiview controls, and custom transitions support deliberate live production.
Pros: Per-source audio filters, VST support, plugins and scripts give advanced users room to tailor a workflow.
Cons: It is desktop-only, so users seeking a browser-based studio should look elsewhere.
Cons: It does not support multistreaming, a drawback for creators who need to broadcast to multiple destinations at once.

Alternatives

For a dedicated game-recording choice, game recording software may be a better starting point. For broadcast-focused options, compare live streaming software or game streaming software; readers looking for a different category can browse live TV streaming services, screen recording software or virtual camera software.

Bandicam is a freemium alternative with Windows, macOS, Linux and web availability, and paid one-PC annual or perpetual plans; consider it if those plan terms and platform range suit your needs. SteelSeries Moments is a free Windows option. Outplayed is a freemium Windows alternative with Core hosting for three months and a Premium plan that adds unlimited hosting and other clip features. NVIDIA ShadowPlay is free on Windows 10 or 11 for supported GPUs with GeForce driver 551.52 or later. Medal offers a freemium option across Android, iOS and Windows, with Premium at 9.99 USD per month billed monthly. Streamlabs Highlighter is free on macOS and Windows and includes automated gameplay highlight detection, editing and export. Razer Game Clips is a free Windows alternative. Segra is free and open-source on Linux and Windows, with replay buffering, a clip editor and automatic game highlights.

Verdict

Choose OBS Studio if you want a capable, customizable scene-based recorder and streaming tool without subscription costs or usage caps. Its production and audio controls are compelling for deliberate broadcasts; look elsewhere if you need a browser studio, multistreaming, or an automatic gameplay-clipping workflow.
