Overview

Northflank handles container builds, networking and orchestration for microservices, databases, background jobs and scheduled tasks. Teams can use its managed Kubernetes in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, connect accounts on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Oracle or CoreWeave, or import Kubernetes clusters from other providers, including bare-metal and on-premises environments. That range makes it relevant both to teams seeking managed infrastructure and to those that need to retain control of where workloads run.

The platform combines deployment with tools for managing development workflows: its REST API, UI, CLI, GitOps, reusable templates, pipelines and preview environments provide several ways to automate delivery. Rollback, canary rollout, approval gates and deployment audit logs support controlled releases. Northflank was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in London, England.

Key features

Integrations and automation

Source connections include GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps and Cursor Origin, as well as self-hosted GitLab, GitHub Enterprise Server, Gitea and Forgejo. Registry support covers Docker Hub, GitHub Container Registry, GitLab Registry, Amazon ECR, Google Artifact Registry and Azure Container Registry. For observability, teams can connect Datadog, New Relic, Splunk and Prometheus, or ingest logs through syslog or HTTP. This breadth is useful for teams with established toolchains; it also means Northflank can sit alongside rather than replace those tools.

Security and support

Secrets and files are encrypted at rest with AES-256, and secrets are injected at runtime. Managed-cloud workloads use Kata Containers or gVisor, mutual TLS, network policies and Kubernetes namespace isolation. Authentication includes OAuth through GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Google, TOTP two-factor authentication, and enterprise SAML 2.0 or OpenID Connect SSO. Northflank states that it is SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA compliant; ISO 27001/27018 is not available. Basic email support comes with all plans, while premium support adds dedicated Slack channels, video calls, faster responses and service-level agreements with uptime guarantees.

Pricing

Northflank is freemium, with pay-as-you-go charges based on consumption. The Sandbox plan is 0.00 USD per free and includes 2 free services, 1 free database, 2 free cron jobs and always-on compute. Those caps make it a practical starting point for a small project, but not a broad free environment for multiple services or databases. A payment method is required before creating resources even on this plan.

Pay-as-you-go is billed only for consumption, prorated to the second, with infinitely scalable capacity, 6+ cloud regions, 600 BYOC regions, and CPU and GPU. It is described for solo developers, personal projects, bootstrapped companies and early-stage startups. The price is custom pricing; consumption billing avoids a fixed monthly commitment but makes actual cost depend on use.

Northflank also offers per-container compute plans at custom pricing: nf-compute-10 includes 0.1 shared vCPU and 256 MB memory; nf-compute-50 includes 0.5 shared vCPU and 1024 MB memory; nf-compute-100-2 includes 1 dedicated vCPU and 2048 MB memory. These sizes give teams a defined resource allocation, but the published plan information does not establish a price for comparing their cost.

Enterprise has custom pricing, invoice-based billing and an annual commitment. It includes SSO/SAML/OIDC, audit logs, global backups and HA/DR, support for 50k+ developers per tenant, secure runtime and on-prem deployments. It is aimed at high-growth startups, large enterprises, regulated industries and high-demand applications; the annual term and custom pricing make it a poor fit for buyers seeking a small, fixed-cost plan.

Platforms

Northflank supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows. Its deployment targets include Northflank managed cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Civo, Oracle, CoreWeave and Neb. The combination of hosted and self-hosted options accommodates varied infrastructure choices, though teams must still bring a payment method before creating resources.

Who it's for

Northflank is a strong fit for development teams that need to deploy multiple workload types and want infrastructure choices alongside automation, integrations and release controls. Its managed Kubernetes reduces cluster-management responsibility, while bring-your-own-cloud and imported-cluster options suit organizations with existing infrastructure. The Sandbox can serve personal projects and early exploration; larger or regulated environments can consider Enterprise. Teams needing only a lightweight service catalog, or unwilling to supply payment details for a free start, may prefer another option.

Pros and cons

Broad deployment choice: use managed Kubernetes, connect major cloud accounts or import clusters, including on-premises and bare-metal environments.
Workflow coverage: API, CLI, GitOps, templates, pipelines and preview environments accompany rollback, canary rollout, approval gates and audit logs.
Useful free allowance: the Sandbox includes always-on compute, two services, one database and two cron jobs, but requires a payment method and has firm quantity caps.
Enterprise controls: SSO, audit logs, backups and HA/DR support larger or regulated deployments, but come with custom pricing and an annual commitment.
Pricing transparency is limited: pay-as-you-go and the per-container plans have no stated prices, so teams cannot estimate costs from these plan terms alone.

Alternatives

For a developer portal rather than a deployment platform, Backstage is a free open-source framework with no stated price or plan limits. Cycloid is worth considering for teams that want a free SaaS tier capped at five users and one workspace, with Blueprints, Forms and orchestration plus native RBAC, SSO and MFA. For an internal developer portal with a free tier, configure8 is another option.

Port may suit teams whose priority is a free portal tier with up to 15 seats, 10k entities and 400 runs. Skyhook is another freemium option. Teams seeking a service catalog with a free tier for up to three full users and unlimited basic users could consider Atlassian Compass. Ravion and Wayfinder are also freemium alternatives.

Verdict

Choose Northflank if your team wants a single platform for deploying varied workloads, automating delivery and choosing between managed Kubernetes and infrastructure it already controls. Its breadth and release controls are the main reasons to shortlist it. Look elsewhere if a free start without payment details or clearly priced compute is essential.
